Complete article:

The majority of the Dallas Cowboys starters
will play the first half of Saturday's preseason
game against the Denver Broncos at Invesco
Field at Mile High, coach Wade Phillips said
Friday.

The only starters who will not play the entire
first half will be quarterback Tony Romo, tight
end Jason Witten, running back Marion Barber
and wide receiver Terrell Owens. That group
will likely play only one quarter.

The Cowboys broke training camp in Oxnard,
Calif., Tuesday and have been practicing with
the Broncos this week.

The Cowboys left Oxnard Tuesday, and prac-
ticed with the Broncos on Wednesday and
Thursday. Friday, I think they just had a pre-
game walkthrough.

Diabetes pushes aside Dove Valley drills

Excerpt:

...

Wilson, the Cowboys quarterbacks coach,
and Cutler, Denver's starting quarterback,
spoke about blood sugar and insulin pumps
and managing life with Type 1 diabetes.

"It's a constant battle," said Wilson, who
has lived with diabetes the last 22 years,
"but if he can handle professional football,
he can handle diabetes. I told him I'd be
pulling for him."

Comments: Optimal control (handling) is
automatic for the overwhelming majority
whose blood sugar is handled without
human interaction. Type 1s require manual
handling, a 24x7x365 (366 every 4 years)
process. Ideally, football players such as
Cutler will receive help in handling the
disease, -if- medical personnel are ade-
quately involved. Most have to handle
the disease with little to no help.

Increased death risk for type 1 diabetics:
http://www.reuters.com/article/healthNews/idUSCOL96676320080529
---

Excerpts:

Relative to their peers without type 1 diabetes,
patients who are diagnosed with the disease in
young adulthood are at greater risk for death than
those diagnosed in childhood ...

Overall, the diabetics in the study were 4.7-times
more likely to die during follow-up than similar-
aged individuals drawn from the general population.

The relative death risk, however, differed for
younger and older diabetic patients. In individuals
between 15 and 29 years of age, diabetes increased
the risk of death by 6.2-fold, whereas in younger
people, the disease raised the risk by 4.2-fold.

The risk of death increased with increasing disease
duration, the report indicates.

Of the 108 deaths, 47 resulted from diabetes com-
plications. Twenty-four deaths were related to acci-
dents or violence, including six suicides.

In addition, 17 deaths were attributed to drug abuse,
which included insulin overdoses, as well as over-
doses with other drugs, mainly with opiates.
