What shhhall I get?

I was thinking maybe I'll get ' The Vagina Monologues.' I've been meaning to
read this book for a long time now. I also wanna get this very beautiful book
on graffiti that I saw last time I was there. And oh, probably some political
books too.

So yeah, what's everyone reading these days?

Don't forget about the plethora of African-American writers: Richard Wright's
Native Son, Ralph Ellison's Invisible Man, anything by James Baldwin, anything
by Amiri Baraka (formerly LeRoi Jones), Zora Neale Hurston's Their Eyes Were
Watching God, for starters. Hurston not only addresses the oppression of
African-Americans, but the oppression of women both inside and outside the
African-American community.

I second this. He's my favourite author :)
Another Roadside Attraction= my favourite book, but Jitterbug Perfume is a
close second.

I'm reading a book about how the government is really reallly realllllly fucked
up and is taking control of everything through the guise of public "education"
and government funded programs. The book is fantastic, it's called "Government
Nannies" it's by Cathy Duffy. A definite must read if you give a shit about the
future of this world.

Yeah, that's a fun one.I gotta say I love all of Tom Robbins books but
ironically my least favourite is "Even Cowgirls Get the Blues" even though
that's his most famous.

Anyone ever read anything by Don DeLillo?
"White Noise" is a fantastic book.

Oh, and Jeff Noon, he wrote "Vurt" and "Pollen", check him out if you like
cyberpunk stuff.

I used 'The Hitch Hikers guide to the galaxy' for my review of
personal reading in sixth year at school. My teacher srongly
advised against it, but I ended up getting an 'A' :)
Maybe its because everyone else done 'Jurasic Park' that year
and the 'markers' were glad to see somthing different!
But Yeah , fantastic book.
cheers

Mr Nice by Howard Marks. Its his autobiography. This guy had
one hell of and interesting life. From the cover of the book:

He just spent 6 Years in one of Americas thoughest Jails.
He had contacts with MI5 , the IRA and the mafia
He was wanted by the British secret service , the DEA and
American and British customs.
You'll like him!

Worth a read!

Cheers

Go and buy any collection of short essays by George Orwell. They are more
interesting and better written than 99% of the fiction I have ever read.
Find a collection that includes "Politics and The English Language" I know
that recommending a book of essays makes me sound pretensious but really I'm
not! They are just really well written and fascinating and he wrote on lots
of different subjects from mining to public executions to literary criticism
to travelogues to poli sci.

Also Edgar Allan Poe's detective stories are great too. He only wrote a
couple but they came before ACD invented Sherlock Holmes and were obviously
an influence. Fun stuff.

Books I like relevant to this ng:

1) Brave New World - Aldous Huxley (though just about everyone reads that
anyways by the time they've finished highschool)
2) Phikal - Alexander Shulgin

My other favorites:
1) Lucky Jim - Kingsley Amis
2) Catcher in the Rye, Lord of the Flies, 1984, etc

Ohhhhhh i went to a talk givern by Howard ..i have a signed copy!!
Aparently if you bought dope in Europe ( hash ) between 1980 and 1990 they
was a 1/8 chance that Howard sorted it out!

I saw him in a little Welsh town it was cool and he was smoking puff on
stage ..and kept commenting "this is my favorite bit" i asked him a question
too but cant remeber what it was...proabably for some phone numbers ;)

My mate Steve and I were the only people in the audence smoking ! which was
weied and howard saw us and asked for a bit..and shared some off his!!! MAD
as fuck night i tell ya. He Dj'ed abit of deep house at the end which was
cool too , he was realy stoned and a bit tipsy so the mixing was a little
umm weak hehehe.

Goooood Book :)

Plurz n Mwahz .. ( who was it who used to say that? )

I must be weird.... I'm reading: Ariel by Slyvia Plath, The Stranger by Camus,
and Strange Deaths by Ian Simmons ( when I'm in a ghoulish mood ) as well as some
literary smut by nin.

Some of my many favorite authors would include D. H. Lawrence, Ernest Hemingway,
Wolfe, Eudora Weltry, Ursula K. Le Guin, Slyvia Plath

Am I weird, or has anyone else here read any of these on purpose?

I started reading "The Belljar" by Sylvia Plath. Never finished it... although
it was a good book. I really need to.

I loved the Bell Jar and I would like to read more of her writing but I haven't
yet. I also would like to read some Camus, he's definitely on my "to read"
mental list :)
Anais Nin is as well. Geez, I should stop reading about communes and the shitty
education system in this country!

I have to agree here. 'Politics and the English Language' is one of the
best esays of the 20th and something everyone should read. I recommend
anything by Orwell as well as anything by Noam Chomsky, whom I feel carries
on in the same level as Orwell
