Why take a chance on the Supreme Court? They could add legitimacy
to the judicial tyranny taking place in Florida. Why not just convene
the state legislature, and have them handle it?

Katherine Harris has statutory authority to stop the hand count, she
does not need to go to court. The election commission attorney also
told her she had that authority. The Attorney General -- who is a
Democrat hack -- can only give an advisory opinion. In the meantime
the integrity of the ballot is being destroyed with these illegal
hand counts.
Has Bush Been Made an Offer He Can't Refuse
All he has to do is declare victory. The votes have been certified
and he won. The absentee ballots will confirm that fact. But, Jim
Baker continues to whine and make unnecessary concessions, and the
Secretary of State petitions the Supreme Court to enforce a law
that is already on the books, and allows illegal hand counts to be
certified. Also, there has been no investigation into the obvious
fraud that has reduced Bush's lead from close to 1800 to 300.

as odd given its strong Democratic ties

WASHINGTON -- As the fight over Florida's election results moves into the
courts, the lawyers hired by the Bush and Gore teams are taking center
stage. Of particular note is trial lawyer Barry S. Richard.
Richard is a partner with Miami-based Greenberg Traurig, which has strong
Democratic Party ties and donates mostly to Democratic candidates.
The law firm employs Marvin S. Rosen, the former Democratic National
Committee finance chair who worked closely with Vice President Al Gore in
raising funds for the 1996 campaign. Another partner is former Democratic
Rep. Jim Bacchus.
Recent Greenberg Traurig alumni include Sen. Ted Kennedy's wife and the
late Commerce Secretary Ron Brown's son.
Richard, a Democrat himself, works out of Greenberg Traurig's Tallahassee,
Fla., office where he's litigated many state, as well as federal, cases.
He seems the ideal choice to represent Gore's team in the state's capital.
Only he's not representing Gore. He's representing George W. Bush -- as
his lead Florida attorney.
The choice has some conservative legal analysts here scratching their
heads. They question how wise it is for a Republican presidential
candidate to hire a Democratic lawyer from a Democratic firm, especially
when the political stakes are so high.
Richard will bring dozens of Greenberg Traurig associates and paralegals
into the case, increasing the risk of leaks back to the Gore legal team,
some speculate.
"It raises issues as to whether information can be kept confidential,"
said Judicial Watch general counsel Larry Klayman.
Landmark Legal Foundation president Mark Levin agrees there are risks, but
points out that the American Bar Association sets rules against leaking
information in such politically sensitive cases.
"If anybody violates the privilege and confidentiality requirements, they
could face disbarment and the loss of their livelihood," Levin said.
"Anybody who shares confidential and privileged information in a way that
harms their client is playing a very, very risky game -- if they're
caught."
Levin says Bush likely was limited in his choices, since there aren't many
Republican trial lawyers.
"Barry Richard, I know by reputation, is one of the finest trial lawyers
in the country," Levin said. "Now, I suspect most of these top-flight
trial lawyers are Democrats, so it's kind of hard not to stumble across
their law firms."
But it remains to be seen where Richard's loyalties lie in this
politically charged case, Levin says.
"The proof is in the pudding for me," he said. "If he wins a few of these
legal skirmishes, then I think Bush picked good counsel. If he doesn't,
then I'll have some questions."
Klayman is more skeptical.
"I question the wisdom of retaining Greenberg Traurig, given the fact they
employ Rosen and employed Victoria Kennedy and Michael Brown, who ended up
at Patton Boggs, which is another Democratic firm working for the Bush
campaign," Klayman said.
Benjamin Ginsberg, a member of Washington-based Patton Boggs, is acting as
general counsel to the Bush campaign.
Calls to the Bush campaign headquarters in Austin, Texas, were not
returned by deadline.
Rosen, one of Greenberg Traurig's most prominent members, was instrumental
in helping reelect Gore and President Clinton in the last campaign. But
his fund-raising tactics got him in hot water.
Rosen and his firm have been tied to illegal foreign donations from
Miami Beach developer Thomas Kramer, a German citizen, and Mark Jimenez,
a citizen of the Philippines.
In fact, Greenberg Traurig in 1998 was fined $77,000 for soliciting an
illegal donation from Kramer. The firm's fine ranks in the top 20 levied
by the Federal Election Commission.
As DNC finance chairman, Rosen supervised the activities of convicted
fund-raiser John Huang, then DNC vice chairman of finance. After the '96
election, the DNC had to return about half of the more than $3 million
raised by Huang, since it came from illegal foreign sources.
Former Justice Department special prosecutor Charles LaBella targeted
Rosen during his investigation into 1996 fund-raising abuses by the DNC
and Clinton-Gore campaign.
On page 61 of his July 1998 interim report, LaBella said: "There are
several incidents involving John Huang, Marvin Rosen, David Mercer and the
DNC which are troubling.
"These incidents suggest at some level, certain DNC fund-raisers were
actively engaged in conduct which had the effect of concealing
questionable fund-raising conduct from the FEC and the public," he added.
"The particulars are detailed below:"
But Attorney General Janet Reno redacted the details about Rosen and the
others. The following two-and-half pages of LaBella's report are blank.
Rosen also was one of the participants in a controversial White House
meeting held on Nov. 21, 1995, in which DNC and Gore staffers discussed
diverting part of donations into Clinton-Gore hard-money accounts, which
are subject to federal election law. Gore also was there.
But he's told prosecutors under oath that he didn't participate in the
hard-money discussions because he was in the bathroom at the time. Too
much iced-tea, he says.
The meeting is critical because Gore said he didn't raise any hard money
during his 46 fund-raising calls from the White House. He's claimed
there's "no controlling legal authority" against his dialing for soft
money from government property.
But one of Gore's aides quoted him as saying "count me in on the calls"
during the meeting on raising hard money as well.
Though Rosen is a close supporter of Gore, he is just one of about 350
attorneys at Greenberg Traurig. He also is no longer based in Miami. Rosen
now works as counsel to the firm and offices out of his New York
telecommunications company -- far from Richard in Tallahassee.
It was not immediately clear, however, how much contact -- if any -- Rosen
has had with the Gore camp or Greenberg Traurig about the Florida election
case.
Calls to Rosen's New York office and Gore's Nashville, Tenn., headquarters
were not returned by deadline.
Victoria Reggie Kennedy signed on as counsel to Greenberg Traurig in its
Washington office in 1995. She and husband Ted Kennedy are friends with
Rosen.
She left in 1997, the same year Michael Brown pleaded guilty to breaking
campaign-finance laws by laundering money to Kennedy's Senate campaign
through three Greenberg Traurig employees. Brown had worked with the
employees and Kennedy's wife in the firm's Washington office, among many
other lawyers.
While Bush tapped a Democrat legal powerhouse, Gore's staying closer to
home, politically.
His legal team is led by O'Melveny & Myers senior partner Warren
Christopher, Clinton's former secretary of state. He's joined by O'Melveny
partner Ronald Klain, former Gore chief of staff, and O'Melveny partner
Mark Steinberg, Clinton's former associate deputy attorney general.
Steinberg served with Christopher on the commission that criticized the
Los Angeles Police Department for using excessive force in arresting
speeding black motorist Rodney King.
Black lawmakers are lobbying Attorney General Janet Reno to investigate
alleged civil-rights violations tied to voting in Southern Florida.

The president of the Florida Holocaust Museum said Saturday
that George W.
Bush's grandfather derived a portion of his personal fortune
through his
affiliation with a Nazi-controlled bank.
John Loftus, a former prosecutor in the Justice Department's
Nazi War Crimes
Unit, said his research found that Bush's grandfather,
Prescott Bush, was a
principal in the Union Banking Corp. in Manhattan in the
late 1930s and the
1940s.
Leading Nazi industrialists secretly owned the bank at that
time, Loftus
said, and were moving money into it through a second bank in
Holland even
after the United States declared war on Germany. The bank
was liquidated in
1951, Loftus said, and Bush's grandfather and
great-grandfather received
$1.5
million from the bank as part of that dissolution.
"That's where the Bush family fortune came from: It came
from the Third
Reich," Loftus said.
Loftus made his remarks during a speech as part of the
Sarasota Reading
Festival. The author of "Unholy Trinity: The Vatican, The
Nazis and the
Swiss
Banks," Loftus documented the Swiss bank accounts that
harbored funds
confiscated from Holocaust victims and the participation of
Italian priests
in smuggling Nazi war criminals to safe haven in Canada,
Central and South
America and the United States after the war.
Although he said he had a file of paperwork linking the bank
and Prescott
Bush to Nazi money, Loftus did not provide that
documentation Saturday.
Loftus pointed out that the Bush family would not be the
only American
political dynasty to have ties to the "wrong side of World
War II." The
Rockefellers had financial connections to Nazi Germany, he
said.
Loftus also reminded his audience that John F. Kennedy's
father, an avowed
isolationist and former ambassador to Great Britain,
profited during the
1930s and '40s from Nazi stocks that he owned.
"No one today blames the Democrats because Jack Kennedy's
father bought Nazi
stocks," Loftus said. Still, he said, it is important to
understand these
historical connections for what they tell us about politics
today. The World
War II experience points out how easy it was then -- and
remains today -- to
hide money in multinational funds.
That money flows into American politics today, he said, from
"a series of
multinational corporations behaving like pirates. They don't
care about
ideology; they care about money."
Loftus' speech left many in tears.
"I am absolutely shocked," said Nancy Krauss of Punta Gorda.
"I wish this
would have come out before the election. My husband voted
for Bush. I don't
think he would have voted for him if he would have known."

anti-Semitism. It is most disturbing in these days of renascent
Nazism in Germany, and of anti-Semitism in Europe at large, that
the "Protocols of the Elders of Zion" is still being used in
academic circles. What people who quote this "book" fail to
mention, and apparently fail to realize, is that the Protocols
is a fake redacted by the Russian secret police nearly 100 years
ago, even before Zionism existed as a political movement. This
essay presents a brief story of the Protocols and their place in
modern Arab nationalism. The "Protocols of the Elders of
Zion", the most notorious and most successful work of modern
anti-Semitism, draws on popular anti-Semitic notions which have
their roots in medieval Europe from the time of the Crusades.
The libels that the Jews used blood of Christian children for
the Feast of Passover, poisoned the wells and spread the plague
were pretexts for the wholesale destruction of Jewish
communities throughout Europe. Tales were circulated among the
masses of secret rabbinical conferences whose aim was to
subjugate and exterminate the Christians, and motifs like these
are found in early anti-Semitic literature. The conceptual
inspiration for the Protocols can be traced back to the time of
the French Revolution at the end of the 18th century. At that
time, a French Jesuit named Abbe Barruel, representing
reactionary elements opposed to the revolution, published in
1797 a treatise blaming the Revolution on a secret conspiracy
operating through the Order of Freemasons. Barruel's idea was
nonsense, since the French nobility at the time was heavily
Masonic, but he was influenced by a Scottish mathematician named
Robison who was opposed to the Masons. In his treatise, Barruel
did not himself blame the Jews, who were emancipated as a result
of the Revolution. However, in 1806, Barruel circulated a forged
letter, probably sent to him by members of the state police
opposed to Napoleon Bonaparte's liberal policy toward the Jews,
calling attention to the alleged part of the Jews in the
conspiracy he had earlier attributed to the Masons. This myth of
an international Jewish conspiracy reappeared later on in 19th
century Europe in places such as Germany and Poland. The
direct predecessor of the Protocols can be found in the pamphlet
"Dialogues in Hell Between Machiavelli and Montesquieu",
published by the non-Jewish French satirist Maurice Joly in
1864. In his "Dialogues", which make no mention of the Jews,
Joly attacked the political ambitions of the emperor Napoleon
III using the imagery of a diabolical plot in Hell. The
"Dialogues" were caught by the French authorities soon after
their publication and Joly was tried and sentenced to prison for
his pamphlet. Joly's "Dialogues", while intended as a
political satire, soon fell into the hands of a German
antisemite named Hermann Goedsche writing under the name os Sir
John Retcliffe. Goedsche was a postal clerk and a spy for the
Prussian secret police. He had been forced to leave the postal
work due to his part in forging evidence in the prosecution
against the Democratic leader Benedict Waldeck in 1849. Goedsche
adapted Joly's "Dialogues" into a mythical tale of a Jewish
conspiracy as part of a series of novels entitled "Biarritz",
which appeared in 1868. In a chapter called "The Jewish Cemetery
in Prague and the Council of Representatives of the Twelve
Tribes of Israel", he spins the fantasy of a secret centennial
rabbinical conference which meets at midnight and whose purpose
is to review the past hundred years and to make plans for the
next century. Goedsche's plagiary of Joly's "Dialogues" soon
found its way to Russia. It was translated into Russian in 1872,
and a consolidation of the "council of representatives" under
the name "Rabbi's Speech" appeared in Russian in 1891. These
works no doubt furnished the Russian secret police (Okhrana)
with a means with which to strengthen the position of the weak
Czar Nicholas II and discredit the reforms of the liberals who
sympathized with the Jews. During the Dreyfus case of 1893-1895,
agents of the Okhrana in Paris redacted the earlier works of
Joly and Goedsche into a new edition which they called the
"Protocols of the Elders of Zion". The manuscript of the
Protocols was brought to Russia in 1895 and was printed
privately in 1897. The Protocols did not become public until
1905, when Russia's defeat in the Russo-Japanese War was
followed by the Revolution in the same year, leading to the
promulgation of a constitution and institution of the Duma. In
the wake of these events, the reactionary "Union of the Russian
Nation" or Black Hundreds organization sought to incite popular
feeling against the Jews, who they blamed for the Revolution and
the Constitution. To this end they used the Protocols, which was
first published in a public edition by the mystic priest Sergius
Nilus in 1905. The Protocols were part of propaganda campaign
which accompanied the pogroms of 1905 inspired by the Okhrana. A
variant text of the Protocols was published by George Butmi in
1906 and again in 1907. The edition of 1906 was found among the
Czar's collection, even though he had already recognized the
work as a forgery. In his later editions, Nilus claimed that the
Protocols had been read secretly at the First Zionist Congress
at Basle in 1897, while Butmi in his edition wrote that they had
no connection with the new Zionist movement, but rather were
part of the Masonic conspiracy. In the civil war following
the Bolshevik Revolution of 1917, the reactionary White Armies
made extensive use of the Protocols to incite widespread
slaughters of Jews. At the same time, Russian emigrants brought
the Protocols to western Europe, where the Nilus edition served
as the basis for many translations, starting in 1920. Just after
its appearance in London in 1920, Lucien Wolf exposed the
Protocols as a plagiary of the earlier work of Joly and
Goedsche, in a pamphlet of the Jewish Board of Deputies. The
following year, in 1921, the story of the forgery was published
in a series of articles in the London Times by Philip Grave, the
paper's correspondent in Constantinople. A whole book
documenting the forgery was also published in the same year in
America by Herman Bernstein. Nevertheless, the Protocols
continued to circulate widely. They were even sponsored by Henry
Ford in the United States until 1927, and formed an important
part of the Nazis' justification of genocide of the Jews in
World War II. After World War II and the attendant Holocaust,
the Protocols ceased being part of the popular conscience in
Europe in the United States. However, with the birth of the
State of Israel and the eruption of the Arab-Israeli conflict,
they became part of state-sponsored anti-Semitism throughout the
Arab world. anti-Semitic ideas had already been spread by
Christian missionaries in the Middle East since the early 19th
century. This activity erupted in the Damascus blood libel in
1840, which was followed by many recurrences of the libel in
other Arab countries in the latter half of the 19th century.
European anti-Semitic works were already being published in
Cairo in Arabic before the turn of the century. The Protocols
were translated into Arabic from the French edition by al-Khuri
Antun Yamin, probably in the late 1920's. Many editions appeared
starting in the 1950's, mostly in Cairo and Beirut. President
Nasser publicly asserted their authenticity, and his brother,
Shawqi Abd' al-Nasir, published an edition in 1968 entitled
"Brutukulat Hukama Sahyun wa-Ta`alim at-Talmud" ("Protocols of
the Learned Men of Zion and Teachings of the Talmud"). In the
same year, an Islamic congress which convened in Cairo produced
some papers containing anti-Semitic themes which had been
rampant in prewar Europe. Unlike its counterpart in Europe,
antisemitism in the Arab world seems to be officially sanctioned
and promoted. It forms part of religious sermons and appears to
be part of public education. The Protocols today form part of
the ideology of the Muslim Brotherhood and its allied Islamic
Resistance Movement (Hamas), whose part in the Palestinian
intifada is well known. The statement that the "enemies" or the
"Zionist invasion" are behind "secret societies" such as the
"Freemasons, Rotary Clubs, the Lions and others" around the
world for purposes of sabotage is repeated three times in the
Covenant of the Islamic Resistance Movement. Mention of these
organizations, together with the claim that the "enemies" were
"behind the French Revolution, the Communist revolution and most
of the revolutions we heard and hear about", reveals direct
borrowing from the Protocols and its predecessors. The Protocols
are finally mentioned by name in Article 32: ... The Zionist
plan is limitless. After Palestine, the Zionists aspire to
expand from the Nile to the Euphrates. When they will have
digested the region they overtook, they will aspire to further
expansion, and so on. Their plan is embodied in the "Protocols
of the Elders of Zion" ("Brutukulat Hukama Sahyun" in the
Arabic original), and their present conduct is the best proof
of what we are saying. In summary, use of the Protocols by
modern day Arabs is living testimony to the transplanting of
classical European anti-Semitism into present-day Arab society.
