hospital, 4 October, 2002. He was 91.
He was born 5 August, 1911, the son of Lieut. A.C. Burges, East
Maitland, New South Wales, and was educated at Sydney University;
Emmanuel College, Cambridge.
Career: Research Fellow, Emmanuel College, 1938; served in War 1939-45
RAF Bomber Command, and was mentioned in despatches. Professor of
Botany, Sydney University, 1947-52; Dean of the Faculty of Science and
Fellow of the Senate, Sydney 1949-52; Holbrook Gaskell Professor of
Botany, Univ. of Liverpool, 1952-66; Acting Vice-Chancellor, 1964-5;
Pro-Vice Chacnellor, 1965-66; Hon. General Secretary ANZAAS, 1947-52;
President British Ecological Society, 1958,1959; British Mycological
Soc., 1962; Member, Committee, Nature Conservancy England, 1959-66;
Member, Waste Management Advisory Council; Joint Editor, Flora Europea
Project from 1956; Chairman, Northern Ireland Advisory Council for
Education, 1966-75; Chairman, Ulster American Folk Park, 1975-88;
Northern Ireland American Bicentennial Committee, 1975-77; Scots Irish
Trust, 1977-92; Chairman, National Trust Northern Ireland Committee,
1978-81.
Professor Burges, of Semley, Wiltshire, married in 1940, Florence
Evelyn Moulton, by whom he had three daughters, Judith, Jennifer and
Anne.
He was appointed CBE in 1980.
