I remember Jose Sosa as a member of the Lions of the Chosen, in the mid-70s, when players and journalists, before the game, sat in the club house to hear the experiences of Pepe Lucas and the jokes told by Federico Velasquez, with Raul Ferreiras, Silvio Martinez, Ramon Romero, Martin Rivas and other players who were part of the team.
When Sosa was sitting on the bench he seldom spoke, he always greeted everyone upon their arrival; he was so affable. He was a gentleman.
Yesterday I received information from Joelisa Mota, that José Sosa died Saturday at age 60, in the hospital of Father Billini. He was buried on Sunday in the cemetery at Sanchez.
Sosa, cousin of Philip, Matthew and Jesus Rojas Alou, debuted in the major leagues on Tuesday, July 22, 1975, against the Montreal Expos at Jarry Park, where he lost in a relief role.
The first game he saved was on July 30, 1975, and it was against the Padres in San Diego, and in that game managed the feat of being the first Astros pitcher, in his first turn at the plate, to hit a homer.
Sosa hit the home run in the eighth inning against Dan Frisella, of the San Diego Padres in the Astrodome in Houston.
His last game was pitched on Monday September 26, 1976, also against San Diego.
His record in the majors was 1-3, 4.60 ERA, with a save. He pitched in 34 games, 58.2 innings, he allowed 67 hits, 29 walks and 36 strikeouts.
In nine seasons in the minor leagues recorded 41 wins, 53 losses, 4.25 ERA, 629 innings, 576 hits allowed, 297 runs, 427 walks and 497 strikeouts.
He debuted with the Dominican League Lions of the Chosen, and pitched for them, 1977 to 1978, where he participated in 111 games, 252.1 innings, 218 hits allowed, a record of 9-13, 2.96.
For several seasons after his retirement served as bullpen coach.
