"nine inch nails surprises with club gig"

about 600 lucky cleveland rock fans got a belated christmas gift wednesday night
when nine inch nails played a surprise charity concert at the odeon concert
club in the flats.
the band, led by former clevelander trent reznor, is now one of the biggest
names in popular music and rarely plays dates in small clubs. more than 13,000
tickets have been sold for the group's upcoming jan. 8-9 stand at the
cleveland state university convocation center.
the odeon concert was announced on radio at 7 p.m. wednesday. the flats was
soon flooded with hundreds of nine inch nails fans and the show sold out in 20
minutes. admission was $5, with the proceeds going to local cleveland
charities.
reznor and his four-piece band (including new keyboardist charlie clouser)
treated the capacity odeon crowd to a stunning, full-blown, two-hour show
that included 17 songs and two encores. the band drew material from each of
nin's three studio releases -- "pretty hate machine," "broken" and "the
downward spiral" -- plus played songs from "the natural born killers" and "the
crow" soundtracks.
the odeon, which has a better sound-and-light system than any rock club in
cleveland, was the perfect venue to see nine inch nails. reznor's live show is
a masterful mix of electrifying music and rock theater. it easily fills up
large spaces such as arenas, but it's even better when the avalanche of sound,
lights and special effects is literally in your face.
"we hate playing arenas as much as you hate going to see bands in arenas,"
reznor told the audience shortly after diving into the crowd to do a little
body surfing. "it's great to be back in a club."
the odeon concert was a warm-up for the next leg of nine inch nails' "self
destruct tour." the band went from cleveland to dayton yesterday, where it
performed at a sold-out show at hara arena. the group will [be] in michigan
tomorrow for a sold-out show at the palace at auburn hills, then return to
cleveland jan. 8-9 for the csu dates. (tickets are still available for the
jan. 9 csu show.)
nin manager john malm jr. said reznor decided to do a cleveland club date
several weeks ago. "he loves to play clubs and misses it," malm said wednesday
night. "we are playing all arenas now. but this is what he loves. he loves
that close interaction with the audience."
malm said nine inch nails band arrived in cleveland on monday and conducted
rehearsals at the odeon on tuesday and wednesday. the group, which has been on
the road since march, is booked through feb. 18 for the next leg of the "self
destruct tour." malm said the tour may be extended, but that reznor is
"itching to start writing and recording" a new nin album.
the odeon show was the fourth nine inch nails concert in cleveland this year.
reznor performed at the agora theater in may on the first leg of his tour. he
returned for a two-night stand at nautica stage in the flats in august, shorly
after the band appeared at woodstock '94.
