I'd heard Tower was selling all rock CDs for 50% off, as they go out of
business. Since Tower's normal prices were always about 30% too high, I
figured there might be some good deals too be had. I waited too long,
though, the racks had nearly been picked clean by last Saturday. I had
planned to fill in holes in my collection, but most of the major artists
were all gone.
I did manage to get a few nice ones, all new and unopened, for a total of
$53 out the door, which was really all I could afford anyway.

Calexico - Garden Ruin

Rascals - Ultimate Rascals

Jeremy Spencer Band - Flee (haven't listened yet, but many thanks to q for
letting me know this existed)

North Mississippi Allstars - The Early Years - this is a two-fer of I guess
their first 2 albums, Phantom & Shake Hands With Shorty. $10 for 2 CDs. What
a great band, thanks to da musicaner for turning me on to them.

Mountain - The Best Of Mountain Live - compilation on some cheapie label,
but with 50% off $6.99 it was too good a deal to pass up.

Kate Bush - The Sensual World - I always had wanted some Kate Bush music,
and I think Zeke or someone else here said this was a real good album. Cost
a mere fin.

Steve Kimock Band - Eudemonic - haven't broken the shrink wrap yet, but
Kimock is the man, always worth a listen. Hope the drummer on this is the
incredible Rodney Holmes.

Oh man! I bought that one a few years ago because it had "Carry Me Back" on
it, and that was a big song in the 'hood back in Sept, '69. Otherwise,
there prolly wasn't one day that went by in the summer of '69 that we didn't
spin the Rascals greatest hits album called "Time/Peace," and man was that a
GREAT collection of songs!

Summer of '69 was an eclectic mix. Rascals, Roland Kirk, Spencer Davis
Group (w/Stevie Winwood), Procol Harum, Pharoah Saunders, the Temptations,
the Four Tops, the amazing Johnny Taylor, Sly & the Family Stone, Moody
Blues, Beatles, Who, Hendrix, Johnny Matthis, Bobby Darin, Creedence
Clearwater, and the greatest new album of them all: Led Zeppellen's first.
Dasm, what an ear-opener that was!

$5 for one of my favorite albums of all time. Not bad!

I did the same thing yesterday in Nashviile. I got:

Beatles Anthology 2
Buzzcocks - Singles Going Steady
Ricky Nelson - Greatest Hits
Elvis Presley - Elvis

It was fairly picked over and some deals were better than others. Lotsa
crap for $1.99. The books were really picked over. Here in Nashville, they
are putting an FYE store in Tower's place after liquidation. Is it any
good?

Hopefully the local indie stores will be smart and keep their prices low.
There's nothing quite like a trip to the record shop.

The other great Felix! The consummate power trio (even tho there was a
keyboardist i think). I saw them 35 years ago this month at the Winterland,
headlining over J.Geils and two other bands. People told me that J.Geils
would steal the show, but Mountain blew them away.
Then a few months later, we saw West, Bruce, & Laing, again at Winterland,
with only maybe 1,000 people in the audience, as it was Easter night. We had
gone on a whim, only because we knew of the players --- they hadn't recorded
a thing yet. They DESTROYED the building that night, it was one of the 10
greatest shows I ever saw. Certainly the best jam I ever witnessed. Leslie
West rules! We talked and talked for months after that show about how great
this band is, but then when they finally come out with a record, it's a
piece of crap (IMO). If Bill Graham recorded the show I saw on Easter 1972,
Wolfgang's Vault has a gem on their hands.

This album I just bought is probably more the esoteric stuff.
But I've heard a freebie of the band with the Dead drummers --- Rhythm
Devils --- and Kimock sounded fantastic. More like his old self. But with a
very Jerry-like vibe! Close enough to sort of pay homage (as would seem
appropriate in a Dead offshoot band); but not so close as to sound like he's
copying. I can't think of another guitarist who could pull that off. The
man's amazing.
The female singer in the Rhythm Devils, I ain't wild about ....

I don't know if that's true or not. I read a fairly recent interview where
Phil spoke highly of Bob. I think the 4 surviving original members (counting
Hart) have a certain kinship that will always tie them together. They are
brothers. Brothers fight sometimes, but in the end they are still brothers.
I don't know if that kinship is the same between Lesh and Kimock, though, so
I wouldn't be confident that Kimock will ever play with The Dead again,
unfortunately. But I hope I'm wrong!

> the FELLOW from PHISH is in that group??

I think Mike Gordon was in Phish. He also recently toured playing with Leo
Kotke.

Hey, we were speaking of Mountain; Wolfgang's Vault has 2 Mountain Fillmore
East shows up there. One has Felix's "Theme From an Imaginary Western"
(which IIRC was written by Jack Bruce). They both have the great extended
jam, "Dreams Of Milk and Honey". Wonderful stuff!
Damn, now I also see that Mountain apparently has an official bootleg series
of their own. I'm gonna have to look into that. I can see the money flying
out of my wallet already!

"Record Store?" How quaint. According to the parent company's website
it's "... a customer-centric, cross-channel retail infrastruture"!

Apparently, that's how one says "a lousy store, usually found in a
crummy mall, with a poor selection, poor service and high prices".

One of the many chains owned by Trans World Entertainment (Coconuts, etc.).

http://www.twec.com/corpsite/stores/

T-W also owns formerly great chains from the NY-NJ-metro area like Sam
Goody's and Compact Disc World- now you know why those stores suck these
days, too.

That would be my description of the store (Tower) that they're replacing,
too.

Actually, I checked out the FYE website, and their prices and selection seem
better than Tower's. But then the online store is probably much better than
the actual walk-in stores.

Rhino, I think? Money can make you mellow, it's true. Ask Bruce!

> but I DONT KNOW if they THAT BROTHERLY towards each other!!!

I don't either, but I believe the remaining four will play together again.

nobody

True. But The Dead just didn't sound quite right with all these other guitar
players. I think they'd sound best with Steve Kimock --- he's got a bit of
Jerry in him.

and some of em, specially WEIR thought he could.
> not with that RATDOG music he CAINT!!!

It's still weird to hear somebody else, especially Weir, singing Jerry
songs. Thing is, they haven't much choice --- the best material by far were
the Garcia/Hunter songs.

Can't argue with that. I didn't find em especially aggravating, just not
interesting.

Bingo!

FYE is an absolutely terrible store. It's ridiculous what they charge
for most things.

Of course, as with any of these stores, there's always a chance they'll
have just the CD you want marked down to a very reasonable price for
whatever reason, but the vast majority of the stuff on the shelves is
in the $15+ range.

FYE makes Borders look like CD Warehouse.

tower was 10 times better than FYE. the customer service was angry,
but selection, singles, prices, sales, a great magazine section...I'll
miss ol' tower records.
