I bet Mentalwreck tries to refute the post below:
That article might be true in one extreme circumstance, if a contact
lens wearer was totally irresponsible with caring for them, didnt clean
them properly or at all, wore them for days, weeks without taking them
out to clean, slept in them(especially if they are NOT silicone
hydrogels!) In other words, a worst case scinerio showing a total lack
of care and regard!
Properly cared for, the risks of contacts is at least ten
times(probably much more) lower than lasik over your lifetime. With
lasik, the 1 in 1250 losing 1 line of vision is false, its more like 1
in 5 to 1 in 10 that lose a line.(10-20% will lose a line) Even the
surgeons websites state this risk!
I can show you hundreds of articles stating the damage of lasik. There
are some articles stating the damage of contacts for those unlucky or
careless, but contacts damage far less eyes. The fact 20 million wear
contacts and only 1 million got lasik, most of them former glasses
wearers is more evidence people would much rather wear glasses/contacts
than risk lasik!
And you claim to know the interent:

]OHSU eye doctor says laser surgery safer than contacts
]Traditional assumptions have held that contact lenses are safer than
]laser surgery to correct vision problems. Now, an Oregon Health & Science
]University Casey Eye Institute physician, comparing data from several
]recent studies, has found that belief may not be true. William Mathers,
]M.D., reviewed several large, peer-reviewed studies and found a greater
]chance of suffering vision loss from contact lenses than from laser
]vision correction surgery, also known as "refractive" surgery.

How about you give Jonathan Modie a call? According to Oregon Health &
Science University he works for them at that number:

I see you still haven't done any studying of logic.

Correction: OSHU says Jonathan Modie works for them, and that the number
is theirs as well. Looks like there was a change in who answers what
number since the last time OSHU updated their directory. Which lends more
credence to the idea that OSHU doesn't update their site on a daily basis,
which is what they would need to do to keep current with press releases.
First you claim the article that Glenn linked to wasn't produced where it
claimed it was. I proved you wrong with about 90 seconds of research.
Now you are claiming that it might be a Lasik surgeon lying to get people
out of contacts. Well the author, according to his bio at
http://www.ohsuhealth.com/cei/bios/mathers.html :
]Throughout Dr. Mathers' career, research has been a consistent area of
]interest. He has published over 120 journal articles and abstracts and
]has given more than 110 presentations at national and international medical
]conferences. He attributes his commitment to research to "a personal
]interest in science. I like trying to understand the world and I believe
]in the process of scientific investigation. I feel privileged to have
]investigated many eye conditions." His colleagues have recognized his
]contributions, and Dr. Mathers was President of the Contact Lens
]Association of Ophthalmologists (CLAO). He also served on the editorial
]board for two journals: the CLAO Journal and Cornea. In addition, he has
]been part of the FDA Joint Council on Contact Lens Compliance and the
]CLAO's Industrial Standards Committee.
Hmm...seems to be working in the contact lens field. So, maybe, just
maybe he might know more on this subject than you.
And, you seem to be a little misinformed about the contact lens experience
and risks, oh mister 'I only wore contacts for two days'.
I wore contacts for 10 years between '93 and '03, until my eyes became so
light-sensitive while wearing them it felt like I was dripping acid into
my eyes. I was very religious about following my regimen of cleaning and
replacing lenses. I still got 3 eye infections durring that timeframe.
Now before you go into your usual responses:
You are not psychic, so if you try and tell me that my experiences
aren't what I say they are, you will get asked for the next lottery
drawing's numbers. If you don't get them right, you will be mocked.
Dr. Mathers, corneal specialist and refractive surgeon at Casey Eye
Institute.
He may minor in contacts but majors in lasik and other RS. He will tell
you something like "I can fit you in contacts, but why? Lasik will get
the job done and you will never have to worry about your eyes/vision
again plus its less risky than contacts!"
The two days was in soft contact lens orthoK. I have tried regular soft
contacts quite a few times but infrequently as I cant tolerate them for
more than a couple hours. You are lucky you tolerated them 10 years
till your eyes just rejected them. Then you got lasik rather than go
back to glasses. How bad were the infections? A typical case of pinkeye
that clears up in a couple days? Did you experience any permanent
damage from contacts? Did you ever sleep in contacts or overwear them?
It might be true the complication rate is higher for contacts, but
something as minor as a little irritation, discomfort or dry eyes isnt
even worth mentioning. Contacts give me dry eyes which resolve upon
removing them. Lasik may give permanent dry eyes! Infections by
contacts are easily treatable, especially if caught early and clear in
days no problem.
Serious permanent complications is very rare with contacts if you
exercise proper care, the vast majority with problems do everything
wrong! I know someone that leaves his contacts in till his eyes really
hurt then he takes them out, waits for the pain to go away then pops in
another pair. Hes gone for a few months without taking em out! Hes
getting lasik soon and doesnt care about the risks, just wants to get
done with it and never worry about his eyes again.
I guess lasik might be the less risky option than contacts in *his*
case. But for most people, contacts are a far better and safer option
and theres always glasses!
Can't tolerate SOFT contacts for more than a couple of hours? And he
expects to sleep in rigid ortho-k lenses which will squash his cornea?
Hmm.. try closing your eyes..and pressing a finger against your
eyelid.. anyone think that Ace is going to be able to tolerate that?
NO CHANCE.
I can't recall anybody who is as much of a whiner about even soft
contact lenses!
Glenn, you know I dont attack you or anyone else. But do you honestly
believe this false, fiction, fabricated(three F's) report? I have
explained why it is false. Explain why you think its false or not.
What a joke ! The retard who has no job, no education, lives in
mommie's basement, is trying to be an authority on matters of eyecare.
Kinda like asking a stone mason to design a nuclear power plant.
We are praying for your salvation.
No no no! Ace does NOT live in his mother's basement! He lives in
Florida.. almost no houses have basements due to sandy soil and the
high water table. He lives in mommie's garage.

LOL both of you are wrong. First of all, no basements in my house nor
in Florida for the matter. Serebel is *wrong* about this. Second of
all, I live in my bedroom so Ragnar is also *wrong* about this!
No garage on that house, eh?
I'm not impressed.
The same newsagents also spread other false reports such as the nuclear
bombs we should found in Iraq.
Good company?

What Glenn should further add is a disclaimer saying that article cant
be validated and may not be true. Any guliable people that seriously
believe lasik is safer than contacts is doing a great disservice and
may be making the mistake of their lives. Lasik is something elective,
not something that has to be done!

Feel free to answer Glenn directly in this tread, do not try to jump on
my train.
TMHO you'r postings are not supposed to be taken seriously.
As always Ace, give mom and dad a kiss and go to sleep, remember hands
above the sheets to avoid getting more shortsighted as you are already.

Neither pro,nor anti, LASIK, Lasek, PRK etc......
It finally clicked. You must be a paid shill for OrthoK. That is why you
keep coming up with such strange motivations for people, you are operating
under them yourself. If you take money to portray a position it is very
easy to see why you would project that motivation on somebody else.
You need to start signing your posts 'Ace - the OrthoK shill'.
Nice try but wrong and false.
> Nice try but wrong and false.
Nope. Got you pegged now shill. So, do you get paid by the post or by
the word?
Ace lives within walking distance of North America's msot active
orthoK provider... yet he pretends that there is not orthok provider
available to him.
I get paid nothing. I am in favor of orthoK as a far safer alternative
to lasik, that is all
So why are you wearing glasses?
