When we think of Urdu poetry, Faiz comes to mind. With Faiz and his
poetry, his poem 'mujh se pehli si mohabbat meri mehboob na maang' comes
to mind. And with this poem comes to mind the woman who sang it, and on
hearing her rendition, Faiz, allegedly, gave up his claim on the poem.
Plz God make Noor Jahan well and keep her alive and healthy.
It's usually the composers who understand poetry, sometimes as well as
the poets themselves. And if they dont understand it well, poetry loses
its effect.
BTW does anyone know if there are any good young contemporary poets? Or
is Urdu poetry totally based on history now? At least thats what they
tried to show in the bad Merchant Ivory flick "In Custody" (muhafiz).
I know none of u people using ALUP will answer this post, since u r all
busy with bashing the posters and raving about Ghalib (as if there never
lived any other poet).

The best way to deal with a gap is to start a thread of your liking and
then try to follow it up with several postings. I have not seen the
movie that you mention and therefore cannot comment on it. But in so far
as the Urdu poetry is concerned there is plenty of young talent around.

Amrit Banga writes, "Poetry is that expression of emotion which
exhilarates the spirit but bares the soul... Farhat Shazad has sqeezed
in a lifetime of emotions into his young life and then released them as
a bouquet of poems."

Below is a poem of this international award winning poet. Judge it
yourself for its depth and value:

agar badan ek makaan hai
makaan bhi ek kiraaye ka
aur is meiN hum mukeem haiN
kiraaye-daar ki tarah
to maalike-makaan ko koi
khabar bhe’j de
ke lut chuke haiN hum
hamaare paas ab nahiN hai
koi aisee shai
ki jisko hum kiraaye ke bataur
usko de sakaiN
bagair kuchh ada kiye
thaharnaa is makaan meiN
hamaari zhakham zhakhm par
buland sar panah qabool kar sake
nahiN hai yeh humeiN yaqeeN
to maalike-makaan
ya to aa ke sanbhaal le wagarnaa phir
humeiN yeh khud makaan
usko choD kar safar ke baaNdhani paDe gi
yeh shikastaa-tar kamar
-(Farhat Shazad)

It took quite a bit of my time to transliterate this. I have tried to do
my best but please forgive me if there are any errors. Your
comments/corrections are most welcome.

aana idher humnay choda hai kyon
kisi nay kabhi pucha nahin

har kisi ko chahiye ek ghalib hi
us say kam koi nahin

aap ki sun kar baat yeh khayal utha
kaun ho tum jo ghalib ko nahin dhoondtay ho
yahan toh sab hain paagal ek ghalib par
akelay ek tum hi nahin hain ab jaantay hain

Meray aanay jaanay par laga kar pehray

humnay chod diya jab aana jaana teri galion say
tera hi dil kahta hai ki aa phir laut kay jaanay kay liya aa

Isn't this from Meena Kumari's album? IIRC, the nazm is ....

yuuN teri rahguzar se, deewaanaawaar guzre
kaandhe pe rakhke apne, apnaa mazaar guzre

hamne bhi tumko dekhaa, tumne bhi hamko dekhaa
tum dil hi haar guzre, ham jaan haar guzre

Please let me know if I am mistaken.

Yes! Nita ji, This is the one. I had this poem on a tape from some old
radio program and often wondered, who wrote it and who rendered it? So
it is Meena Kumari! Thanks for the info. It is a lovely poem and she
recites it with feelings. Do you know if the CD/tape is available? After
reading your message, I listened to it again. Here it is:

yooN teri reh guzar se, deewaanaa waar guzre
kaandhe pe apne rakh ke, apnaa mazaar guzre

baithe haiN raaste meiN, dil ka khandhar sajaa kar

shaayad isi taraf se ik din bahaar guzre

bah'tee hu'ee yeh nadiyaa, Ghulte hu'eeye kinaare
koi to paar utre koi to paar guzre

too ne bhi hum ko dekhaa, hum ne bhi tujh ko dekhaa
too dil hi haar guzraa, hum jaan haar guzre

yooN teri reh guzar se diwaanaa waar guzre
-(Meena Kumari)

It is delightful!

Ahmed Faraz is definitely not the first Pathan poet of Urdu language.
There is Qateel Shifai. And there are others too, will name em when I
remember :)

The CD is available. It is titled "Meri nazmeN, Meri zubaani" by Meena
Kumari. It is a nice collection.

Here some more lines from her poems....

chaand tanhaa hai, aasmaaN tanhaa
dil milaa hai, woh bhii tanhaa

zindagi kyaa isi ko kahte haiN
jism tanhaa hai, aur jaaN tanhaa
----------
puuchhte ho to suno, kaise guzar hoti hai
raat Khairaat ki, sadqe ki sahar hoti hai

Gam hi dushman hai meraa, gam hi ko dil DhoonDhataa hai
ek pal kii judaaii bhii agar hoti hai
---------
aablaa_paa koyi is dasht meN aayaa hogaa
warnaa aaNdhi meN diyaa kisne jaalaayaa hogaa
(not sure of second line)
---------

Keep smiling

ok, i got it. That shair is by Talib Baghpati.
When singing Faraz's "ranjish he sahi", Mehdi Hasan adds two ash'ar by
Talib Baghpati, and mentions that the radeef and qafia are the same, and
that he doesnt know which ghazal was written before.
The two shairs, which, IMHO, are pathetic when compared to the beautiful
"ranjish he sahi" are following:

mana kay mohabbat ka chhupana hay mohabbat
chupkay say kisi rose jatanay kay liye aa
jaisay tujhay aatay hain, na aanay kay bahanay
aisay he kisi rose na jaanay kay liye aa
(ironically, they take away the ironic nature of faraz's 'aa' from the
ghazal.

Mehdi Hasan has done this kind of bad addition once before in Faiz's
masterpiece ghazal, 'gulon main rang bhare'. Of course when it's Mehdi
Hasan singing, we forgive all his trespasses :-))
He added the following horrible and totally unoriginal shair by some guy
i cant rem the name of (good :-))
hua jo teer-e-nazar neem kush to kya hasil
maza to jub hay kay seenay kay aar paar chalay

And that really spoiled faiz's ghazal, since he sung it right in the
middle :(

a li'l critique on that shair is:
first of all its a ghalib rip off. That topic has been versed by Ghalib
many times and one popular instance is:
koi meray dil say poochay tere teer-e-neemkush ko
yay khalish kahan say hoti jo jigar kay paar hota

I dont think I have to go into talking about the beauty of this shair
(no matter how ghisa pita it is :-))
Now in the bad shair up there, the two words 'hasil' and 'maza' r really
unpoetically used. Well to put it short, its totally bad, pathetic. ugh!

Now I am really confused :-(( Which ash'ar are by Ahmed Faraz and which
are not? Can someone please post the lyrics for the whole ghazal? I am
posting whatever I remember. Additions/corrections are most welcome.
