Faded martial arts star Steven Seagal may be popular in Russia and counts
aspiring he-man President Vladimir Putin as one of his good buddies, but in the
United States, he’s been accused of being a serial sexual predator.
Before and after widespread allegations against producer Harvey Weinstein
sparked the #MeToo movement, multiple women, including Jenny McCarthy, Portia de
Rossi, Julianna Margulies and Rae Dawn Chong, have come forward to accuse Seagal
of sexual misconduct spanning decades.
The 65-year-old actor and aikido black belt now is reportedly under
investigation by the Los Angeles Police Department for a rape alleged by actress
Regina Simons, The Wrap reported in January.
On Monday, Simons was one of two women to appear at a news conference to detail
allegations against Seagal. Simons said the star raped her in 1993, shortly
after she turned 18, while they were filming “On Deadly Ground,” KABC TV
reported.
The other woman is former model Faviola Dadis. During their press conference in
the Woodland Hills office of their attorney Lisa Bloom, both women said they
were assaulted by Seagal when they were teenagers.
But will the 65-year-old actor ever face any consequences?
He seems to spend much of his time in Moscow these days, especially since Putin
personally granted him Russian citizenship in 2016, according to the website
ThinkProgress. From Moscow, the Michigan-born Seagal gave an interview to
British TV in September during which he said it was stupid to think that Russia
interfered in the 2016 U.S. presidential election.
Certainly, Seagal’s defense of Putin or of his second homeland was far from
anyone’s consideration Monday when Simons and Dadis spoke at the press
conference.
Simons repeated claims she previously made in an interview with The Wrap. She
said Seagal attacked her 25 years ago at his Beverly Hills home. She had gone
there under the guise that it would a wrap party for “On Deadly Ground” in which
she appeared as an extra. But when she arrived, she said, he was the only one
there.
“He took me into this room and then just closed the door and started kissing
me,” Simons told The Wrap. “He then took my clothes off and before I knew it he
was on top of me, raping me… People always talk about fight-or-flight. But no
one talks about the freeze.”
During the press conference, Simons added: “Seagal was more than twice my size,
and twice my age. I was not sexually active, nor had I ever been naked in front
of a man before. I froze.”
She continued: “There was nothing consensual about this.” She said the event
“completely changed the trajectory of my life.”
