Removing "stolen" tags?

I think I screwed up when doing the early Mage's Guild quest where Ajira
wants you to plant a fake soul gem in Galbedir's desk. I put the gem in
there, and then I saw the nice collection of soul gems, just sitting there
on the desk, with no witnesses, so I grabbed them. Thing is, now I can't
ever go to Galbedir for enchanting. Any soul gem I use (even one I didn't
steal from her) will automatically cause her to call me a thief, attack me,
and cause me to be kicked out of the guild. Since there was at least one of
each grade of soul gem there, the game will apply the stolen tag to every
soul gem I find from now on, and specifically to Galbedir. (I can go to
other mage's guild enchanters, but Balmora is most convenient for me.) Am I
pretty much completely screwed from ever being able to get enchantments from
her again? (At least until I get Azura's Star...) Or is there some way to
make her forget about the theft? Not sure whether it's the character or the
items that get tagged, but either way, it's quite annoying. Isn't she
supposed to forget after 3 days or something? It was quite a while ago that
I did this...

Yes.

Unfortunately, there is no in-game way to achieve this.

It's the item that gets tagged. Actually, things are even worse: The item
prototype gets tagged, so that even soul gems you buy from an NPC are
labelled as being owned by Galbedir.

> Isn't she supposed to forget after 3 days or something?

No. The owner tag will stay on your soulgems forever, unless...

you are willing to perform this little experiment. I have never done it
before, so if you try this successfully, please let me know.
You can rename your savegame file from savegame.ess to savegame.esp and
open this file with the "Enchanted Editor". Delete all objects under
"Stolen Items", save and rename it back to savegame.ess. If you are lucky,
everything worked as intended. If you are unlucky, you might completely
screw up that savegame, so keep a safety copy.

Good luck!

Just tried it myself: It works.

Thanks, now I know why she attacked me <g>.

Is this just the regular Construction Set? Or some other editor? I
couldn't find that option in the one that comes with the game...

That's a different editor called "Enchanted Editor", available at
http://www.rpgplanet.com/morrowind/modpages/EnchantedSetup0.91c.exe
(no FilePlanet, don't worry). In my opinion, it is one of the most
valuable tools, if you want to edit mods.

Heh, you've been watching me, I see... Or am I not the only one who can't
get FilePlanet to do anything other than fill my inbox with spam?

Thanks, I'll take a look at it.

Guilty as accused... ;-)

I don't have any problems with FilePlanet. Just use a spamfilter and
you don't see their mails. Spamihilator would be a good and inexpensive
(free of charge) choice.

Well, I wouldn't mind the spam so much if their service actually *worked*.
It's just extra annoying that I'm getting their spam, but I still can't
download any files from their crappy system. So I basically just signed up
for a heap of spam with no actual benefit whatsoever. I've tried twice
already to sign up for their service, and it simply doesn't work. No idea,
but I've given up. No response from tech support, either. It's just too
much hassle and not worth it at this point...

I've now completed the Thieves' Guild quest where one has to retrieve
the four false amulets and am seeking the fifth (genuine) amulet. I
have found the amulet maker in Ebonheart dead and have no leads on how
to go from there. One of the four amulets said that a Daedra was
seeking him so I went back to the Daedra's cave but no dice. Couldnt
find anyone else who was seeking him.

Is there a Havish walkthrough anywhere out there? I've searched and
searched but no avail.

At this point I'm mostly looking for a clue - the guildmaster and the
girlfriend have been no help at all...

I'd been looking for a Havish walkthrough before as well, but no success.

Anyways, I don't remember the amulet quest exactly anymore, but when you
visit that Daedra cave (where you also find the book hinting to the Moon
portal) *and* have the right journal entries, then there will be a
Draemona inside the cave who will talk to you and give advise for the
next step.
However, if I remember right, I went to the daedra cave first and *then*
to Ebonheart. If you have a convinient savegame available, you might try
it in this order.

When you say daedra cave first and then to Ebonheart do you mean AFTER
you got the fourth amulet? Because you HAVE to go there to get the
fake amulet.

My sequence was after I got the four fake amulets and was sent in
search of the real one, I went to Ebonheart, found the body, figured
OK who do we KNOW is out to get him - and made a beeline back to the
daedra cave - and found no one there. Uh besides the fake amulet on
the daedra altar there were three emeralds - was I not supposed to
grab those?

I'm pretty sure I read the book when I was there the first time.
Meanwhile "moon portal" - that's the one in the Havish Mage Guild
right?
