The interesting thing is how we did it, with just barely over one group.
Seven people.
Level 60 Warrior
Level 60 Cleric
Level 60 Enchanter
Level 60 Wizard
Level 60 Wizard
Level 60 Wizard
Level ?? Druid. (he was anon and blue to me)
And to be honest with you, we could have done it with four people, myself and
the three wizards.
The fight went like this. Aegolism on warrior. Druid harmonies and pulls
the room. (not really necessary).
The Enchanter then runes the warrior, and casts Aggro increase on him.
(again, not really necessary)
Warrior engages VS, and uses the Auto-riposte for 10 second discipline.
Wizards number one through three cast Manaburn.
Loot Venril Sathair's corpse.
For those who don't know what Manaburn is, it is one of the final alternate
advancement skills for wizards. It has a two and a half hour recharge, and
allows the wizard to pour all of his remaining mana into a single super high
damage nuke. On a normal hit, Manaburn deals out around 7000 damage.
Critical blasts can be upwards of 20000.
Against any Kunark mob, this is completely overpowered... Against Venril
Sathair, who has about what, 16 or 20 k hp total, you can see the results
above. 5 wizards and a warrior that can tank for 6 seconds could kill
Gorenaire. Thats assuming that none of them get criticals.
You really have to wonder sometimes, whether Verant thinks about things before
just going ahead and adding them... but for myself, at the very least I
would expect to see all Kunark level "boss" mobs become immune to Manaburn
pretty soon.
In the meantime, congrats A_guildmember_01 on Blood Ember Greaves....
(as far as I know, this is at least the 4'th time VS has been slain this way
on our server alone.)
Check the front page of castersrealm. They beat you to this post. They
have nerfs in place on test which limit a whole *bunch* of stuff.
Limiting the top damage of manaburn, limiting the top crit heals, some
other stuff. Basically doing just what you predicted, but to more
classes than just wizards.
That said, even with a limit, manaburn is still a pretty damn cool
ability.

Did you follow the link to the "full release"?
Obviously not.

Been done. With four. And no one else.

glad you can do it with 4 people. last time we did it it was with
60 chanter
60 warrior
60 rogue
60 monk
60 magician
60 cleric
we fought him down. venril sathir just isnt that hard aside from the 1500 pt
lifetap. Have wanted to try gore with the enchanter and 5 wizards though.
For overall consistent damage, you'd probably be better off with
regular nukes. However, when you need crap dead fast, manaburn is the
way to go. When four wizards can kill Kunark dragons in 5 seconds (every
2.5 hours), I wouldn't exactly call that useless.
Our guild used a bard and three wizards. :-)

Guess what mob the bard and three wizards warmed up on earlier in the
day. :-)
The development team is apparently discussing a change to Manaburn: it
leaves a buff on the mob that can't be overwritten. So you'd only be able to
Manaburn once, then have to wait for the buff to wear off. We'll see if they
implement it.

That's nothing.
It was made fairly public a couple weeks ago that *4* wizards (and nobody
else) killed Gorenaire by manaburning her. We've had 2-3 patches since, and
it hasn't been changed.

I don't think this is a serious issue, and I don't think Verant will
move to quickly to nerf it....It is no more "unbalancing" than the
Warriors Defensive Discipline.
Sure it's an amazing amount of damage, but how many 60 Wizards are
running around with that many AAxp points? With a 2.5 hour recharge it
won't be used that often.

That 2.5 hour recharge compares rather favorably with the respawn times
for a wide assortment of major mobs. Based on EQ's history, I'd say
that on many servers the lifespan of quite a few of these mobs will
soon drop from hours to minutes, or even seconds. And the loot from
these mobs will become the private domain of a tiny handful of
characters. That will quite like get Verant's attention. Tho again,
based on EQ history, the nerf will of course be delayed until just about
the time that the mid-tier guilds are ready to get in on the action
themselves. I'm not implying that this will be deliberately timed, it
just always seems to take them until after the power gamers have already
"got theirs" to fix these balance issues.

I'm sorry, but I must have missed a memo. This differs from the current
state of affairs *how*, exactly again?

Um, it differs because, er, um, ahh nevermind.
<Snip>
Remember, getting to that point is only a VERY Uber wizard.. maybe 5 percent
of the wizard population on any given total.
Also don't forget that for the majority of a Wizard's Career, a Mage can
nuke better. At level 34 a Mage's nuke outdamages that of a Wizard, AND they
get a pet.
Wizards dont need to be nerfed. They just recieved that boost they need.

I disagree.
Manaburn at level 60 with AAxp points does not make up for the
mid-level problems with the Wizard class.
I am not saying "nerf" manaburn. I am saying that the class still
needs more balancing
Verant has already stated that they consider Defensive overpowered, and had
they not already designed the high end encounters to take into account people
using it (to the point they would be nearly impossible without it) they would
have changed it.

At least 10 on E'ci, and growing all the time.
As for the recharge, lets compare... it takes VS 72 hours to respawn. It
takes Gorenaire a week. Same with Sev. You don't think the same 4 wizards
could do all of them within a week, since they have to wait 2 and a half hours
between kills? Also, pop times are random now, not server up. The same 4
wizards will likely be able to do two on patch day alone.
Also, consider what it means to mid high level guilds, who don't have 4
manaburning wizards at thier command. If Gorenaire pops, you have to get a
30 person raid into position, buffed and ready to go before 4 wizards port in
and press a button. You don't see that as a bit of an advantage? Hell,
worst case scenario, four assholes could farm her and ransom off the books and
scales for obscene amounts to people who want to actually have a chance of
completing thier epic.
