Lunare shows up pretty promptly and asks me all about it. I said I
hadn't tried talking to Frostwalker after dying since she wouldn't
respond while attacking me, and I'd made up my mind it was some twerp
who'd found a bug, but Lunare convinces me to try again. It turns out
Frostwalker was talking to the Shaman GM in Halas and accidentally
attacked her. This apparently caused the Shaman to charm her, which
then sent her on a bloody rampage, and PVP- PCs can harm other PVP- PCs
while charmed. That was Lunare's take; Frostwalker said she had no idea
what was happening, had no control over her character, and rebooted her
computer to try to stop the carnage.
Alright, no real harm done. My corpse wasn't looted (presumably wasn't
even lootable), and I'm too wimpy to even lose experience when I die.
I'm curious, though, if there isn't the possibility to exploit this.
What if some absolute tank went and attacked the Shaman GM on purpose,
got charmed, and tore the town apart. How exactly does EQ determine who
you're going to attack while charmed? And just how often does that
Shaman GM charm? Often enough that you can count on it happening if you
can hang with him (her?) for a minute or so in a battle?
Sheesh, I leave UO to avoid the annoying PKs, and I get PKed on my third
day in EQ 8-).

You get no experience for killing another player, even in duel or if both
are hawks, and except in those latter cases your body is not lootable.
So they could DO it, but it won't get them anything.

This has happened to me as well. Once I realized that the reason I was
whacking the daylights out of a party member was that I was charmed, I
just sat back and laughed. Couldn't do much else - keyboard control
was completely locked out, so I couldn't even tell the poor guy what
was happening to him.
You can't really look on this as a PVP- fighting a PVP-. Look on it as
a PVP- getting temporarily changed into a weapon by an NPC. After all,
when you're charmed, the "player" part of PC is inactive.

I've had this happen to. In Toxullia forest there's an NPC
necromancer who will attack anyone fighting a skeleton. He once
attacked us, charmed my friend, and had my friend attack the others in
the party. Was very creepy.

The end result of most of these charms is the death of the charmed
person as well. They generally attack a guard or someone near a guard
and get stomped.
The more I find out about this game and its mechanics, the utter brilliance
of its design becomes incomprehensible.
That is such a superb element.

No, you can fight back, pvp or not. I suggest rooting them, and running
away, though. Or if you're strong enough, root them over and over.
Hopefully, the charm spell will wear off before your root does.
btw, the reason no one in thier right mind would be charmed on purpose is
that it generally ends in the player's death. And xp loss at higher
levels is really painful.
