How does dual wield work on Necro pets? I have heard different stories.
Some say that for the 29+ pets to dual wield, you have to give them 2
1-handed weapons. Some say that they dual wield without 2 weapons. Do
pets both dual hit and dual wield like a warrior? Someone else told me
that at level 53 or so, you dont give your pet dual weapons because then
he cant triple hit (which sounds silly). Does anyone have the definitive
answer? I am very frustrated by this.
Personally, I hope you have to give 2 weapons for dual wield to work. It
wouldn't feel right otherwise.

Before you buy.
29+ pets can:
a) Dual wield with fists
b) Dual wield with (2) 1H weapons
c) Use 1H weapon and shield
d) Use a 2H weapon
Side note: Used to be able to give certain 2H weapons and a shield i.e. 2H
Rusty sword and a shield, but that stopped a while ago. Not sure which
patch.
For 53+ pets I have no idea, not that far yet. =)

Pets (and NPCs in general) cannot dual wield with their fists. They must be
equipped with 2 1H weapons in order to use their dual wield ability.

Ok then. Guess its the double attacks looking like dual wields.
At 53 you get a rogue pet and they duel wield and backstab, so its
nice to give them piercing weapons like daggers and rapiers. Pets
chuck out dmg much faster if equiped then with 2 fists. Also you can
augment your pet with intensify death/augment death and they will
wield even faster. Never equip your dual wielding pet with a 2h
weapon, cause it wont produce near as much dmg as with 2 weps. I
usually buy about 10 to 12 regular daggers at a merchant( about 2pp
each) and carry those around with me in my EE bag. Also grab any FS
you can find and hold those for your pet also.
Now here is a neat trick ive found.... If you give your pet 2 weapons
at the same time (dagger and scimitar) then the pet will wield a
scimitar and dagger, but if you give your pet say the scimitar and hit
[give], then give him the dagger and hit [give] then he will wield 2
daggers.

Thats what I would like to believe, but a friend (who admittedly only
plays a warrior in the 30s) says he watches necro pets and at 29+ they
dual wield with hands, because you see both hands punching, instead of
just one.
So I am still confused.
I'm not quite sure how you can justify that. Why would a creature be able to
wield two weapons and attack with each, but not be capable of simply boxing
with each fist?
as for the damage theories, i have yet to test, myself, as i just gained
my 29th level pet spell last night. "/shout woot!"

No pets can dual wield without 2 weapons equipped. Verant's reason for this
is that pets are considered NPCs and if they made it so that pets could
dual wield barehanded, all NPCs of sufficient level and class to dual wield
would be able to as well. This would significantly raise the difficulty
level of higher level mobs.
Of course, Verant only came up with this explaination when they finally
realized that pets (in particular, mage pets) weren't dual wielding
automatically :)

I _see_ tanks and pets alike swinging at the air and never connecting. I
_read_ that they are connecting. Don't rely on watching a pet animation to
tell if a pet is dual-wielding, particularly since they probably only have
one set of animations for a fighting pet.

It's very easy to test. Have a pet with no weapons swing for a while.
You'll never see a quad hit. Give him two one handed weapons, and viola!
Another test would be to log pet's damage and see the difference.
The correct answer is that even though the animation shows them swinging,
they don't use their off hand if it doesn't have a weapon. Generally
animations are not very reliable, as my monk, for example, swings once or
twice *after* every fight.

The weapons have some restrictions, such as:
謬hey may NOT BE NO DROP (ie, you must be able to trade it),
謬hey may NOT be two handed.
The level 29 pet and all those after MAY dual weild weapons.
The level 53, 56, and 59 pets can all tripple (and sometimes quad) without
being given any weapons.
Do not confuse double attack with dual weilding.

You sure about this? I could swear I've given my pet no-drop weapons. I
know I've given it duplicate lore items and it dual-wielded them fine.

That brings up another question. I saw it mentioned somewhere (as well
as your post) that level 53 pets and above can triple attack with no
weapons given. Now, can that pet can still dual wield and double strike
if you give it two weapons? Or not? I.e. is it a choice between triple
strike vs dual wield + double strike? If so, which is better? I know
that the later pets can triple AND dual wield.
I recall an incident with either the level 34 or 39 necro pet (can't recall
which exactly) that it will dual wield two 2h bronze axes that drop off the
dwarves in Butcherblock.
I just smiled and told people that commented about it that my pet was "quad
wielding" ; )
Forgot to mention that it might be fixed in a patch now also.
I also recall an enchanter in my group giving her pet sarnak warbraids
(which are NO DROP) for the AC boost. I could have been mistaken
however.

Exactly...... Pets chuck out more dmg with 2 weps! Also at 44 and 49+
the pets tend to proc more with their lifetaps when dual wielding
since they are attacking faster than with their fists. Not a hard
concept to understand. Watch a pet without weapons in a fight with a
creature. Then give the pet two weapons and watch it in another fight
with a creature of the same con. Then give your pet 2 weps and augment
it, and watch it fly. I noticed my pet stay alive longer when soloing
seafuries after buffed and dual wielding, then just bare fists and un
buffed. How can you dual wield with fists anyways, that just dosent
make sense =) To dual wield (meaning you hold something) would require
2 weapons.

Why do you say that? You are giving them 2 weapons big whoop! Not like
its a devistating bug on gameplay. Oh and backstabs are more frequent
and land harder when the pet is wielding a weapon

It could be that the race/class restrictions on those items you have tried
prevent the pet from using them. I know there are some weapons my pet won't
use that aren't no drop as well.

That's basically what I said in the post you replied to, and in the post I
made prior to that which you quoted as well :)
