Okay, never played a rogue before, nor a dark elf, so a few questions
here:

- if I succeed at sneaking ('as quiet as a cat stalking it's prey'
instead of 'quiet as a herd of running elephants') does that mean nothing
can see me?

- does 'hide' ever go up in skill or is there always going to be a chance
of it failing at the wrong time?

- will I be KoS to anybody in East Commons? Pitifully, my video card is
SO BAD that even with DE vision and the gamma .. er... something :)...
turned up to the brightest I STILL cannot see at night. I thought going
to a place without constant mist might help. I saw someone on allakhazam
mention being dubious as a DE but I wasn't sure a) what class they were
and b) whether they'd quested, so I thought I'd ask. Thanks!

No, Rogue invisible is a combination of sneak/hide allowing
you to move without being seen. Sneak will make you
indifferent to NPC's IF you are behind them.

Hide will go up, but you start with a racial ability of 50
(I think it's 50 at least) so your skill won't go up until
you are of sufficient level for it to exceed 50.

You should not be KoS to anybody in East Commons, other than
the orcs and animals, No Player Race NPC's are KoS worst is
dubious. This changes more rapidly depending on diety.

Ahhh darn. :) Well then I suppose it's just one of those "run-like-hell"
here-comes-a-train runs through Nek forest to East Commons then *g*

Now that I *didn't* know. Thanks! I figured as a DE I was kinda limited
as to where I went.

While not KoS there are only a couple of merchants who will
deal with you. Namely Bubar and Shady Swashbuckler. If
there are any others who will deal with you without faction
work (namely wholesale slaughter of deathfist orcs), I am
sure someone will point them out.

Just watch out for Rinna Lightshadow, she seems to attack every evil person
in the area.

and Iksar do start KoS to some of the NPCs in EC, but since most of the NPCs
are vendors, they don't go lower than dubious (probably due to shopkeeper
elite combat training, they'd smack down every evil trying to sell phat
lewt).

Only if you are BEHIND the critter you're sneaking against. If you
"sneak-hide" THEN you're totally (almost) invisible.

For a dark elf yes. Since they get it as a racial skill, it will start
to rise after 10th level.

Pretty much everybody is dubious in WC to start. Just be careful around
Pardor the Blessed (near the zone to FP). There is a human pally there
that is KOS to you. BTW you can buy/sell from Pardor without sneaking.>

Things can see you. They will not however, go aggro on you if you are
behind them. A successful sneak + hide together will give you Rogue
invisibility, which works on both living and unliving things at the same
time.

>- does 'hide' ever go up in skill or is there always going to be a chance

Hide does go up eventually. Remember that it's a racial skill for dark
elves, and starts at a skill level of 50 or so, higher than possible to
attain at level 1. Past 100 skill, you'll never fail to hide. Same with
sneak. There are mobs that can see invis (Well, more like X-ray vision,
considering you're not suppose to be in plain sight), or have a chance
of being spawned able to see you depending on your level (Though you'll
mainly have to worry about that 50+).

>- will I be KoS to anybody in East Commons?

I think there are one or two Dudley Do-Rights about in EC, but they
won't be a problem unless you go poking about unhidden. Killing orcs as
often as you see them will set you straight though.

Hey slick...

Just in case you don't know and for the benefit of those reading: Sneak
behind a mercantile NPC. Then right-click to bring up the Merchant
window. When you've concluded your business, rehide and move away, still
sneaking. You can do this to any NPC merchant, and it's safe too [1].
Using this technique (But unhiding before you hand stuff in) is an
excellent way of handing in faction boosting quest items whilst deadly,
deadly KOS. You'll find travelling around stealthed slow though.

[1] OK, there was this one time I tried to buy the paper from the new
high elf seller and got attacked by the guards facing in my direction
nearby, but for the most part, you will largely be safe when it comes to
using NPC merchants. It sets your faction to dead-indifferent, so have
you charisma above 103 if you want the best prices.

Well, see, I guessed that when someone mentioned hide & sneak together -
only by practicing my sneak constantly, I've managed to get it to work -
twice so far. :) Both when I was hunting miles from the nearest seller.
So I just go sell in the tunnel until I've killed enough orcs *g*

But thanks for the other info too btw.

As a DE, your hide skill won't go up until level 11...you can do it,
and it'll work sometimes, but you won't get skill increases until then.

First thing I do when I level after getting a quiet moment is standing
somewhere with something targeted, and practicing Sneak, Hide,
Sense Heading, Sense Traps, and Instill Doubt until they all max
out. If your sneak skill only has worked a couple of times, practice
more. As your skill goes up, so will the successes.

The good thing is, sneak can be practiced anywhere (except it cannot
be STARTED in the water). On that long run through Nek or
the Commons, practice sneak every time it un-greys. If successful,
hit it again to un-sneak...your skill should go up pretty quick with a DE's
(a REAL dark elf ;-) ) intelligence.

Good luck to you!

No no no. My *sneak* won't work often. But around the time I dinged 6 it
started working about 1 out of every 10 attempts, so I was selling like
normal last night.

I practice it as I run. Got it and hide doubled up with sense heading.
I hit 'hide' when I'm sitting (yes I know skill ain't going up yet but SH
skill is and it gets me used to practicing it for when it WILL go up) and
'sneak' when I'm hunting.

Oh really? That makes up for the fact that I can't carry anymore than my
poor wussy monk can carry? ;) Hmmm time to start up the old trade skills
again...
