Same with Necros and a skeleton. You tank a lil, back up and toss
spells, then go back and tank some more (letting your pet regen some),
repeat until mob is dead. Pets are incredible for solo adventuring.

I don't know what the mage gets (are they the ones with the ability to
summon food etc.), but the Wizard has built-in cons for all his pros.
Can only wear cloth armor, can only wield a dagger or staff, and has
the fewest hitpoints of any class. A Wizard can be a serious wrecking
ball, but only if there are fighters nearby to keep him safe.

Agreed ... the wizard is an awesome weapon to have in a party, but I get a
lot of calls to find their corpses (I'm a bard) cause they were traveling
solo for some reason and got jumped. So if they're not in a party, they're
in trouble.

I play a lvl 7 wiz. I think the root and nuke strategy is fine with
blues and may be whites but not yellows.
Yellows resist root a lot .. and white do a fairly amount of time.
If you solo and use root, and if it fails, you almost for certain die.
So it is a high rish strategy and i will only use it against blue. For
whites and above I probably would call ona a friend.
And I think root and nuke is not that efficient until level 8 or so.
If i say root and nuke a gnoll (in Qeynos Hills, which con as blue), I
almost have to dump most of my mana to kill him. Not to mention, I am
only doing ~14 pts per shock of fire. He will break free before I kill
him. It is more efficient to bash him with my worn great staff and
slip some shock of fire in once and a while.
I know melee won't work in higher levels, but melee is good at level 7
since it cut down on mana use and reduce down time (meditation).
Also, with a pet, if you see the tide is turning against you, you can
always gate out. So I would say Magician get to solo more, but he got
to share exp with his pet.
I still like my wiz better though. I heard root and nuke is really
effective at higher level since you can kill in fewer shots.

How hard at high level? And at what amount of mana? I would appreciate
some more info. I heard Force Shock and hit like 200? Is that true?
Are wiz DD spells more mana efficient above that?

I have a wiz up to level 7 and try to build him up. He is great! I
think the next char i want to play is a paladin.
I agree there are too few hrs particularly I have a wife and 2 kids
and some friends. (I should ask all my friends to play EQ and thus
don't have to waste anytime socializing with them<g> outside the
game.)

I just acquired Fire Bolt for my wizard which does up to 45 damage for
40 mana = 1.125 dmg/mana. Previously I was using Shock of Fire as my
main weapon (and still do since Bolt takes too long to come out in
melee - always interrupted) which does 15 damage for 15 mana = 1
dmg/mana. I hope the dmg/mana ratio gets steeper soon - I'm tired of
staring at my spellbook. :(

I heard the fire bolt range is now really short? Is that the case? If
it is so, I would forget the bolt spells and just buy teh shock spells
when i reach level 8. I heard ice shock does 36 with a mana of 30. So
that is more efficient than fire bolt + it does not need to be aimed +
it goes off faster.
