Why are pets so frustrating?

While waiting for the servers to come back up, I just thought I'd post
about a recent occurence...

I was in Befallen, grouped with a Necromancer the other night. We entered
the 2nd level and dispatched a zombie and greater skel in the pit at the
bottom of the ruined steps. As soon as the greater was dead, the pet took
off down the hall and zipped around the corner. We split up, and
cautiously went looking for it. I found it fighting another greater at
the top of the stairs by 3rd level. Killed greater, but my necromancer
companion hadn't figured out where I (and his pet) went, yet. For a
moment, I thought we were safe, when the pet proceeded to run down the
steps and attack the ghoul, as soon as the greater went down. I made a
/shout of ghoul heading for zone, and ran. As I ran, I group messaged my
companion to run. Sure enough, 3 seconds later, I had a ghoul, a TS
necro, and an elf skeleton on my tail. I made it out, but my companion
died.

Now, I'm wondering- was this a mistake of my companion's, or is it just
the way pets are? He told me that the pet was not responding to his
commands, but I can't help but be a bit skeptical...

Trust your partner. I have a Level 8 Mage and use pets on a continuing
basis. Sometimes pets just do whatever they want. They truly do have a
mind of there own and every one is different. Some will do exactly what you
say and others will just attack the closest thing in site until it dies.

Tell him to keep his pet OFF guard or whatever. When I use a skeleton,
I don't give it "any" commands. It just attacks whatever attacks me
and defends itself if something attacks it. You really don't "need" to
issue commands *shrug*.

Ewll i have found that if you use /pet follow me when it is first summoned it
usually will not run off, but like the person above said some are better than
others and they really do have a mind of their own

To use a pet pet correctly, you need to issue /pet attack to send him in
ahead of spell, so commands are necessary. Befallen seems to be a little
funny for pets, they always pace the floor and act a little weird there, and
/pet back off doesn't work well there either.

I would guess that it was your companion's mistake. A common mistake. I not
even sure if it is really just a slight bug. When a pet is first summoned I
think it just follows you, but then you can

"/pet guard me" and it will attack anything that comes with a certain
distance of it. This "feature" will get you killed. It's kind of nice when
you just want to sit down and have your pet collect corpse of easier things
to loot, but in a semi dangerous zone it'll be your life when you pet
attacks something not so nice.

"/pet back off" Will make the pet mellow out and wait for the "/pet attack
order"

Now the bug comes in play when I've notice that at times a pet will behave
normally (follow and attack when order) but after awhile it will not stop
attacking. You'll have just finished a kill and it tackles the next closest
thing. I'm not sure if somehow it just gets pissed off after being hit to
many times, but I have had it attack when I know I told it to back off
originally. (At least I think that's the case, I could be hours of Everquest
have warped my perceptions.)

All that to say. If you create a pet and are in a dangerous zone, tell it
originally to "/pet back off"
It'll save you some hassle when you're out of mana and it decides that the
Drake looks tasty.

When a friend of mine goes into Lesser Feydark with me his pet always
runs off, attacks something, gets killed, and then the nasties his pet
attacked follow him all over the zone unless he gates or zones. We never
have this problem in Crushbone, BBlock, or Steamfont. Just Lesser Feydark,
so far. Would you call this a bug?

For this reason, I never tell my pets to "guard me" or "guard here". They
are always on "follow me" and "attack". Having your pets in guard mode in a
hostile area is just asking for trouble. They'll invariable attack things
that you won't be able to handle and like a dumb puppy bringing home a dead
squirrel, they'll happily train that ghoul and his buddies back to your camp
after they dispose of him.

Furthermore, pets dont response to your commands when they are beyond a
certain range (not that big, in my experience), so it's futile to try and
tell them to back off.

Whenever I'm playing my mage with an elemental, and I don't see him anywhere
near me, I tell the group to run, run fast, don't look back, and head for
the zone, because I have no idea what the pet is killing, and if I'll be the
next target when he dies.

Having died often when my pet seemed to refuse to quit a fight or seemed to
attack another crit I've come to the conclusion that it's not his fault :-)

In the "back off" situation I think what is happening is that he will back
off until he is hit again then he's back in the fight. So what I do now is
do /pet back off followed by a quick /pet follow me. If he gets away before
being hit again he will remain peaceful.

In the other situation, I THINK its a matter of the second critter coming in
at the last minute to help the first one. I know I get mixed up in the
confusion. Yesterday I was walking my pet near where someone was fighting a
goblin wizard. My pet was trailing along behind. I then noticed I was being
fried and frozen so I turned to fight the wizard only to learn my pet had
already died. I'm guessing the goblin wiz did an area spell on the guy
fighting him, it hit my pet who jumped in and got killed. All this before I
even knew I was in a fight.

Well, we live (er, die) and learn. I know now to avoid walking by fights
where area spells might be used by the critters.

When I have my pet in Crushbone he paces back and forth, the distance he
travels seems to get greater and greater. More than once while out on one of
these paces he has been attacked.
