P.S. I played both a magician and druid to 45th and 35th respectively.

Magician damage shield is generally 1 pt better than a same level druid
damage shield. Druid damage shield gives +AC, magician's gives +fire.
Druid's damage shield will last a little longer than a same level magician's
damage shield. Magician's damage shield will stack on top of bard's damage
shield and ranger's little damage shield, but won't stack on druids (damn).

Bard's fire based damage shields will stack with either druid or mage
shields correctly. Cold based damage shield used to *subtract* the
existing damage shields (druid or mage). Verant had claimed to fix it a
few times, but last time I checked (about a month ago), it would still
not stack

Run fast, die often, leave a well dressed corpse.
Druids I believe have not one, but two damage shields. One small one, which is
self only, and the one they can throw on others. The mage shield usually
exceeds the thornshield by more than 1 damage, usually by 2 or 3. The new
druid shield, however, will come within 1 point of the mage shield.
I do not know about duration of druid shields.
The self-shield on the mage fire pet is the biggest damage shield in the game,
btw. It hits for 25 at level 44 and I think 30 at 49. Haven't tested it yet.

I believe, from my few tests, that the fire shield on the fire pet hits for
the level of the pet, maybe with an across-the-board subtraction of maybe 5
points.
I've been meaning to do some duels to find out exactly, but need to have
some 30s people around to find out what level my pet is. :)
I did a test on a fire pet summoned from the Level 44 spell and it hit for 25.

The damage shield a druid can cast on another player does not add AC.

Actually, it is strictly dependent on your abjuration skill. My ranger
has maxed 235 abjuration and shield of brambles lasts for about 4-5
minutes. Shield of lava is the best damage shield in the game, no
contest. Not only does it offer fire resistance bonus (nagafen raid
anyone?) that stacks with everything, but it also blesses it's recipient
with a 25 point damage shield.

THey don't stack. The only things that will stack with shield of lava are
the bramblecoat series, bard's psalm of cooling, SLN, and shaman potions.
You can get a damage shield as high as 52 or so.
Also shield of thorns gives no AC bonus. Only the self-only bramblecoat
series does that.
It doesn't? Playing a magician mostly (and a solo necro) you'll have to
forgive the fact that I am rarely the one being damage shielded. :)

First, my fire elemental summoned at 8th level had a 10point damage
shield built in.
Second, the druid ds costs less mana than a mage ds. They last about
the same time (at least up to 25). Of course, I haven't played my mage
in a while, so it might have changed. But the damage shield did the
same damage no matter what level you were. I currently have started a
druid after playing a cleric and warrior to the mid-twenties. The
druid shield does a bit more damage each level you go up.
Overall, it seems to me that the druid damage shield is a bit better
in terms of mana and damage. Of course, I'm not sure how the high
level ones compare, or if things have changed in the last four months.
This was not true when I was coming up. Both druid and mage damage shields
increase with level, although sometimes they max out before max level.

This is incorrect. Mage shield has more damage at every level.
Druid shield stacks with the druid's self-only shield, so possibly the
combination hits for a point more. But I think mage shield will stack on the
bramble shield. So this will be easy to test. Shield yourself with thorns,
get hit, then get a mage fireshield instead and get hit.
