Heard this from a friend who *insisted* that it happened to
her co-worker's cousin. Seemed like such a classic format for a
UL that I had to check it out here. Anyone heard it?

FOAF is renting nice house. Doesn't want to get kicked
out. His dog barked all night one night, neighbours complained,
FOAF was told to keep control of dog. One day, FOAF comes home
from work early, finds dog in neighbours' yard, tossing rabbit
up and down. Quickly goes over and finds rabbit dead and very
dirty. "Oh no", he thinks, "neighbours will have a fit, they're
Chinese and very superstitious." [*] Neighbours not back yet.

FOAF takes dead rabbit back to his house, bathes it and
blow-dries it (! - this is really what she said!), takes it back
to neighbour's yard and puts it back in hutch. A couple hours
later, neighbours come back, FOAF hears screaming of little girl
coming from yard. Parents, little girl gather in yard.
Screaming continues a long time. FOAF finally goes over, tries
to calm them down: "Rabbits are very sensitive, they have heart
attacks very easily and just die."

The kicker: neighbour responds "But the rabbit died two
weeks ago."

(Shocked reactions from the listeners, discussion about how
the dog must have dug up the buried rabbit, etc.)

Is there a book with this legend that I can bring to my
friend as Evidence? :-)

[*] I include this somewhat racist remark only because such
remarks are so common in ULs.

An open letter to that honorable, shrewd, and steadfast Terry Chan:

Dear Mr. Chan, sir:

In my humble opinion you should post the FAQ, even if it hasn't changed
since last time. Now's when it's needed most. And you might use a
glaringly obvious subject line such as "Here's the FAQ! <-----READ".

As a young upstart, before I had grown an asbestos shell, I remember being
stung by reprimands to some of my (freshman-like) initial postings. I
honestly feel sorry for those newbies being taken to task for their not
being familiar with POSH, Nova, etc. Who knows but many of these newbies
might turn out to be masters in their own way.

A disadvantage might be our having to endure threads re-hashing the FAQ's
more intriguing points, but it'll still be worth it. a.f.u's FAQ is one
hell of a document, thanks much to yourself, and to the legendary,
somewhat enigmatic, consistently articulate, and delightfully lecherous
old hat, Peter van der Linden.

Kindest Regards,

Ah yes, the dead rabbit UL again. The FAQ says it's in Brunvand's book
"Curses! Broiled Again!" under the cute title "The Hare Drier".

This should have tipped off your friend: What would the condition of a
rabbit be, after having been dead and buried for 2 weeks?!?! (ick!)

I posted this same story when I was new to a.f.u and was promptly told
that it is recorded in on of Jan Harold Brunvand's books titled "Curses
Broiled Again." The story is refered to as the "Hare Dryer." I recomend
that you read his books. They are devoted specifically to the urban legend
phenomenon. Some of his other books are, "The Vanishing Hitch-hiker", "The
Choking Doberman", and "The Mexican Pet."

You've probably received quite a few responses regarding your posting,
Jamie, but I'll add mine. The urban legend you so perfectly described
(I must admit I hadn't heard the "Chinese are superstitious" addition
before) is covered in one of Jan Harold Brunvand's books, in which he
dubs the tale "The Hare Drier." (Ha, ha.) Unfortunately, I cannot
remember the exact title of the book; Brunvand, master of the urban
legend, has written several, all quite interesting. You might want to
check the FAQ list; "The Hare Drier" gets a mention, along with the title
of the book.

[classic telling of well-known UL deleted]

Yep. Definite UL. Known as "The Hare Drier" by our patron saint, Jan Harold
Brunvand, it's in at least one of his books. Check out _Curses, Broiled Again_
or _The Choking Doberman_, both by Brunvand. I think it's in one of the two
(possibly both).

Didn't this one happen to Churchill? Or was it Disraeli?

Okay. It was posted last week, but I'll do so again. A "glaringly
obvious subject line"? Lemme see what I can do. Maybe after I post
it, we could go trolling some more and see what happens.

Uh, try setting "Distribution" to something other than "local".

An observation about human nature: If you want people to shut up, you
must make them feel stupid, without explicitly insulting them. If you
do the later, all you do is obligate them to "defend" themselves. Of course,
in so doing (defending themselves), they accomplish two goals:

1) Convince themselves that they have been vindicated.
2) End up looking even stupider.

This, of course, makes for a positive feedback loop.
-----------------
So, here's the thing. If you want discipline, do what they do in, e.g.,
comp.lang.c. Whenever you post anything that is even remotely related
to anything that's in the FAQ, what you get is about 2 weeks of abusive
email, none of which insults you personally - that would be too
obvious, and would lead to the problem described above. Rather, the
treatment, which is basically handed out by an enforcement squad
(I assume they must hold weekly strategy sessions), is designed to
subtlely make you feel like an 18yr old who just got off the bus.
Nothing ever shows up in the newgroup. Its kind of like being shunned;
it is as if your posting never existed.

It's very effective. We should implement it here.

Last week, I posted a question in comp.fonts asking for some sources, because
I was planning to write an article on copyright for fonts.

I received a letter saying, read the FAQ; Copyright of fonts is covered there!

I reponded politely that I was aware of that; I wrote that part of the FAQ.

Heh, heh... Nice to see the technique backfire.

The bit about the neighbors being Chinese seems to be a new addition.
At least it was absent from the last dozen times this one was posted.
