It's not clear why they sank. Were they beached by loss of
water, then rapidly re-flooding while on one side did them in?

There was no further explanation so that was indeed possibly the cause.

Perhaps a mooring line was tight causing one end of the boat to be
up in the air when the water disappeared, so leaving t'other end
dangling down and a candidate for the ingress of water. Who knows?
