LIFE did a detailed study and pictorial of a railroad in 1946. This
gives considerable information on the operation of railroads at that
time.
As an aside, railroads were major users of punched card tabulating
systems and then computers from an early date; the New York Central
System supposedly using a Hollerith system as early as 1902. The
New Haven transmitted punched cards of freight cars to distant locations
via telegraph lines.
Unfortunately, incompatible computers forced together contributed
to the Penn Central merger mess. When the merged to create Conrail,
they were very careful to ensure compatibility.
