I was quietly reading a book on heliconias when I got a frantic phone call from
a friend, a fashion designer. He was laughing and sputtering, and could barely
get it out -- "turn on Ch. 6, ay carbamba, she's a little linebacker." I had no
idea what he was talking about, but it soon became apparent.

Wearing a black halter dress, interviewing some people pre-Emmy awards, Ms.
Couric had man arms, cut and beefy beyond belief. Not a good look for her.
Broad, broad shoulders.

Well, now that I know the fashion walk has started, I'll watch the rest, but I'm
still trying to get the man arms image out of my mind. My friend, well, I don't
think he'll ever recover. He's a big fan of her, and thought she was the petite
princess of morning shows. He's destroyed, lol.

I thought that the photo angle and the cut of the dress really foreshortened
them in an odd way- her arm and shoulder were closest to the camera and it made
them look larger than life.

Actually her arms are that buff. On Jay Leno she flexed them and oy vey!
She likes the look apparently and is really into body building. As long as
she's happy.

I'll try to find a url. It was given over at alt.gossip. Maybe you can do
a google search.

Although I find Katie Couric's interview style and politics annoying, I
think she's very attractive, and is very well dressed more often than not.
I don't think her arms put her in the scary category, they're simply
unexpected on a woman her size and with her style.

I know not all the comments are from the same OP, but I'm noticing a
disturbing trend on the ng. How many of us would like to be subjected to
the same scrutiny that is used on some of these people being posted
about? I do enjoy discussions of fashion and how to work on one's assets
as opposed to the negatives. Isn't nice that most people can wear what
they like?

We do tend to be a little tougher on celebrities. FWIW, I don't think Katie
has man arms.

does not pretend that the offense never existed, but she considers it history

I've noticed that same trend Judy and have several posters killfiled 'cause
I hate reading the negative comments/threads. I find it very disturbing.
From Sarah to Gwyneth, and Katie to Reese - they're damned if they do,
damned if they don't.
Many would say that that's part and parcel of the very public job they do.
Their *job* is to entertain us and look how we treat 'em.

I think Katie's arms looked great - toned, strong and glowing - there aint
nothin' wrong with that and though I loved the flirty hem of her dress, I
personally think she could have chosen a more flattering neckline. But hey,
that's just my opinion.

It *is* possible to voice ones opinions without being vicious and cruel and
without making it a personal attack on the individual. I try to treat
others as I would like to be treated and try to remember that everything I
say and do reflects back on me. I could care less how others look, eat,
don't eat, wear or the like. All I really care about is how am I portraying
myself to others and would I like/respect me if I met me on the street.

I'm sure the OP didn't mean to be mean but catty is often the same thing.
Perhaps when a topic like this one comes up again we can tackle it as a more
fashion oriented thread i.e.. "Katie's Dress - What neckline would have been
more flattering on her broad shoulders?"

Back to Katie (and Matt)..I thought they did a very good pre-Emmy job. I
enjoyed them and what an improvement over Joan and Melissa on another channel!!

Eh. Joan's fine as long as she's not trying to be funny. Katie and Matt are too
corny for me. Too gushy-gushy. If the Saturday Night Live cheerleader people grew
up, they'd be Katie and Matt.

I'm looking forward to seeing the E fashion review Wednesday, although the jokes
will be terrible and I can't stand Leon Hall. Debra Messing gets my vote for best
dressed. She gets bonus points for choosing a dress that was particularly
flattering for her body type.

Go Blushun! (My thoughts exactly.) You wrote similar to what I would have
said regarding the dress/arms.

I think Katie looks great too and the buff arms are fine. Katie looks
like she is glowing. I'm the one who always protested when the wives
of politicians were criticized as if looking gorgeous was their full
time job.
I think some of the cattiest comments were on the Miss America thread.
It will never overcome the stigma of being simply a beauty contest if
people complain that the winner should not have been chosen because
she wasn't the prettiest. Beauty, after all, is in the eye of the
beholder.

I thought Katie looked wonderful. I did not see "man arms" on her. I have
seen "man arms" on others and Katie definitely does not have them.

Audrey, it will never overcome being anything but a huge affront to women until
they stop requiring the contestants to take their clothes off. To pretend that
the "best" woman has anything to do with how a person looks in a bathing suit is
nauseating.

If Miss America were really a "scholarship contest", they'd occasionally
have a contestant who wasn't 6' tall, blond, and 36-24-36. Until then,
its pretty clear to me that its strictly a beauty contest.

I find it interesting that the ones defending the celebrities being criticized
are the same ones who criticize people in here. Is it okay to criticize people
that we know, but not celebrities? I think it is far better to criticize
celebrities and be nice to those you actually know.

I think criticism of the famous is an occupational hazard, and in fact, many
celebrities don't bother to read the gossip since much of it isn't even true,
and even if it is, what the heck do they care if someone thinks they have
man-arms? I am not a fan of man-arms. I prefer a feminine look, more like
Jennifer Aniston, who is well-toned, but looks like a woman. JMO.

Some criticism in this forum is deserved, however, and when people ask act like
jerks, they hear about it. We're a savvy bunch.
