Five years ago, it was kelloggs poptart procott day. Save Our
Sailors, that group infamous for giving us prince Haruka, tried to show
the power of Sailor Moon fans to companies. The idea, buy Kelloggs
unfrosted Strawberry pop tarts. They insisted on strawberry and
unfrosted. How many of you bought pop tarts? I bought a box.

What did the procott accomplish? Looking back, it started a lot of
arguing between SOS and those who didn't like them.

I look back on those days, and smile. I compare myself to what I was
like then. I'm a little embarassed at myself back then. When I was a
child , anime consisted only of Star Blazers, Tranzor Z, the hacked
Robotech, Voltron. There was my introduction to Crayon Shinchan in my
high school years, but Crayon Shinchan isn't typical. ^_-

1995, I'm graduating from high school, and Teknoman shows on TV.
Yeah, that's japanese animation, it's just how I remembered it. There was
over the top action, lots of destruction, kick ass machines, the
beautiful, but out of reach woman. Yup, japanese animation.

Along comes Sailor Moon dub, fall 1995, and I'm laughing to myself.
I haven't seen anything this off the wall funny in ages. I thought
Samurai Pizza Cats was bad. "In the name of the Moon, I'll punish you."
Hah! I was yelling in reply "Yes! Please Punish me! I've been
naughty!!!"

In 1996, I searched the web for anything related to Sailor Moon. I
was curious to see if there were people who actually liked this. I was
suprised to find that the show had a loyal following. One page in
particular helped me comprehend the amount of fans out there, Karl
Zaryski's link pages. There were hundreds of pages put together by
hundreds of people. Then there the ones who just lurk. This show had
thousands of fans, amazing.

Browsing through that link list during September 1996, I found Alex
Glover's Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon manga translations. I read them, and
I had a new appreciation for the TV dub. I didn't care about the story in
the dub, but after reading those translations, I enjoyed the tv series
much more. I became a fan of Sailor Moon.

I thought Sailor Moon was the best thing on childrens television. I
tell my friends about it, I browse through multiple websites, I look for
sound clips. My affection for the series grew and grew.

While Karl Zaryski was still updating the link list by himself, he
started putting up photos from other anime series. The Evangelion photo
of an angel didn't bother me too much. However, he put up a photo of
Miaka from Fushigi Yuugi and he praised the series.

It's nice being a fan, but I was an immature fan. I was angry that he put
that photo on his site. My initial reaction "How dare he? Sailor Moon is
the best thing out there! I'll never like anything else, ever!"

I did the usual SM fan stuff, the poptart procott, the petition signings.
I was doing this while being naive, closeminded. Yes, I was a fool. I
don't know why I shut my eyes to other things out there.

In 1997, I found out how vast and different anime was. I saw
Bubblegum Crisis, and I admitted that other series were good. Sailor Moon
was still number one in my ranking.

Then I saw it...Oh My Godddes! It was the series that changed everything
for me. I realised that Sailor Moon wasn't the best thing out there. From
there, I kept seeing things that I liked more than Sailor Moon; Koko wa
Greenwood, Tenchi Muyo, Fushigi Yuugi, Maho Tsukaitai, Escaflowne, Di Gi
Charat, Cowboy Bebop.

My current favorite series are Cardcaptor Sakura and Ah! Megamisama.
Unlike last time, I know that one day, I'll find another series and add
that to my favorite list. That series may already have been released, or
it may have yet to be created.

Poptarts, it's a symbol of what was. We've all come a long way
since those days. Let's all buy a box of poptarts, not to support Sailor
Moon, but to reminisce.

Cheers

Ah... Five years ago. Memories.... [NOTE: For some reason, I think in terms of
school years and not actualy years.]
1996-1997: I was still in band, playing clarinet, sucking at it, blind
that all this was was a little game the school plays with all the kids. I had
no idea waht anime was. All I knew was "Talking Heads are cool! YEAH!"
1997-1998: I had to do a project on moon goddesses for my English class.
I searched on the internet and found a page that mentioned Artemis, Luna and
Diana. That happend to be a Sailormoon page. I thought "Awww... These cats are
cute!" and I looked around on the page some more. Soon, I downloaded subtitled
episode 112 and got hooked. Then, I went to www.talking-heads.net and screamed
"I wanna play the bass and be like Tina! Talking Heads rock!"
1998-1999: I loved anime. I met a guy in my art class who also loved
anime. He seemed to be the only person at my school besides myself who knew
what anime was. We talked. We became friends. We talked about something called
A-kon. He said he was going. I said I'd go too. I went to A-kon and met lots of
other people like me. My friend didn't go. I asked him why. He said he didn't
have any money. I then asked him if he knew who the Talking Heads were. He said
"Nope." I said "Talking Heads f***ing rock, man!" We lost touch, but I stayed
in touch with some of the people I met at A-kon.
1999-2000: More people at my school were getting to know about anime. That
was cool. My sister started hitting on the guy who was my friend who didn't go
to A-kon. That wasn't that cool because I figured out "Hey, I liked him." I
went to A-kon yet again with two of my friends who loved anime also. We had fun
and wrote songs about it. We flirted with guys and they asked me why I didn't
flirt with the H.A. (Hot Asian) with them and chose to flirt with a non-Asian.
I said "What's the matter with you? He's alright! I see his face. The Lord
won't mind! Haha. Talking Heads line."
2000-2001: I got even more anime tapes and manga and various crap. Despite
my efforts, my sister still does not like anime. I love Biology. I love
Chemistry. I met Tina Weymouth. I met David Byrne. I went to A-kon again, this
time with a different friend. On the way there, we listend to the Talking
Heads.

Aw heck, I can't decide what to snip and what not to so I'll leave it all
just top post! ^_-

Woo hoo! This brings back a lot of memories. I started out pretty much the
same. When I saw an ad for Sailor Moon coming to YTV the following weekend,
that was the very start. I immediately made a note to check it out. I
quickly became a fan and joined AFSM, but I remember trying to decide if I
actually wanted to admit that to anyone I knew. I eventually did start
mentioning it to people, they thought I was nuts and they still do! Too bad
for them.

Sailor Moon still holds a special place in my Anime hall of fame but it has
introduced me to many many more great (and better) anime titles. Since that
day I have jumped into the Anime fan forum with both feet. I now have a
huge anime collection that fills an entire wall of my living room, I have
1000 collector cards that I don't really have any other use for that to
just 'have' them, I have garage kit models of the senshi made by VKLL
himself and $1000+ of other collectibles. What this boils down to is that
SM has made a huge impact on my life. I'm glad I've gotten so involved with
anime as it has brought a lot of good hours of great animation. Something I
hope will continue for a long time yet.

Thanks Sailor Moon! ^_^

Be careful with those Pop-Tarts. They can be deadly:

sigh...

five years ago? five years ago i had started working for a company called
Medical Business Resource Center before it turned to the darkside (bought
out and running its employees into the ground). (heavy sigh) and now i'm
working for a temp agency and not doing nearly as well...

five years ago, i was running the Metroanime anime club and hadn't done any
fanfiction. Except maybe that "Three 1/2's Company" piece. i had only seen
two episodes of Sailor Moon, in the original Japanese, and hadn't been able
to get past the initial silliness factor.

go back a few years.

Anyone remember the Phoenix Japanimation Society back in the mid to late 80s
when we were mainly myself, Tom Perry, and the late John Fong trying to form
an anime club when hardly anybody had heard of anime? When we were crowding
people together into a dark room to watch 3rd generation tapes of Orguss,
Macross, Lupin, and Urusei Yatsura? Before commercial subtitling and the
internet provided ways of getting in contact with actual translated anime?
Before Robotech, which was hackery but did manage the collosal feat of
slapping people across the face with the idea that there was something
besides Disney and old Hanna-Barbera to do with animation?

Anyone remember the early 80s with M.A.G.I.C.? (Manga/Animation Gaming
International Circle) the non-group formed by disaffected C/FO people and
wargamers who wanted to do something unheard of - incorporate stuff from
anime or manga into their D&D games?

Anyone remember the 1983 Worldcon in Baltimore? Where i followed some
exceedingly cute Japanese girls and ended up finding out that there were
others besides that "Zonker" fellow i knew in college Journalism who shared
my interest in anime? (Can't remember his real name, just that he
acted/looked like the Doonesbury character and that i'd labelled him as
Zonker from day one. And that he had the opening episode of Go Rion which
had looked promising back in 1979.)

I remember PopTart Procott day. I was in Los Angeles attending USC at the
time and I had the Moon Kingdom Defense Link Website. I volunteered my
services to help compile statistics from the SOS petition signings that day and
I met some people who worked in the animation industry (such as the gentleman
who held the compiling party at his place, he worked on Ren and Stimpy, I think
as a supporting VA).

There sure were a ton of signatures to sort through but we finally finished
late in the evening. Though I got razzed a little for not buying any PopTarts,
there were still plenty of popular pastry to last the whole day and night. I
had fun and I felt I did some good towards getting Sailor Moon back on the air
in the US.

By 1999, my site shut down because I decided to take a year's leave of absense.
So, to fill my time I got into the 1:6 scale action figure hobby (G.I. Joes)
almost full time yet I still found time to watch some Sailor Moon every now and
then.

A couple of weeks ago I was watching the movie, Gettysburg, and for some
reason I started thinking about Sailor Moon. Read my post from last week about
the Silver Millenium to see why. I'm getting back into Sailor Moon after that
post and receiving replies from some old veterans from the MKDL days. I'll
finally start my Sailor Moon DVD collection very soon as well.

Almost brings a tear to my eye as I reminisce. :)

Carry On,

My anime background is much more recent than that ... I didn't even know
about the poptarts procott until I read about it a year or so ago.

I first started watching anime one day after school in Grade 11 (that was 4
years ago). I had heard about this thing called "Pokemon" and had no idea
what it was. So I happened to see it was on and turned on YTV to watch an
episode (it was season 1; I can't remember which off-hand).

Anyway, I started getting into that series ... at the time, I hated Sailor
Moon. I thought it was a stupid show for girls, and had never given it a
second thought. I really didn't start watching it until about 2 years ago.
I watched one episode, and then a second, and then I was hooked.

My exposure to other anime is still very limited ... I mean, I've only seen
Akira once, and it was this summer ... I've never seen a single episode of
Macross/Robotech, or Bubblegum Crisis, Tenchi Muyo, Ranma, Fushigi Yuugi,
... the list goes on and on.

I know I'm catching up late, but I figure I'm doing pretty well seeing how
I've only really become interested in anime over the last couple of years.
I know that there's still lots of great (and not so great) anime out there
which I have yet to see, and I do plan on watching as much of it as I can.

I've actually got a box ... seriously. They're strawberry, but frosted.
Does that count?

Anyway, it's nice to know that there are so many other people out there who
are addicted to anime ... I'm not quite there yet, but I'm definitely
getting close.

Heh, good post Harold. Yeah, Sailor Moon is a "Gateway Anime"...first
you start out just catching one episode while flipping channels. Then
you're making an effort to see it every day, and then the next thing you
know you're signing up for a highspeed internet account so that you can
mainline digisubs straight from Japan, going through a 3 burned CDs a
day habit as you watch more and more until you're left a wasted gaijin
shell of your former self, hiding in the dark of your apartment and
clutching your imported untranslated doujinshi...

Hi Field Marshal Cristal (Keith, isn't it?).

I often wondered what happened to you. I met you at that party, at David
Koenigsberg's apartment. David was the technical director of Ren and
Stimpy, by the way, though he also probably did some voice work. An
episode of his radio show "The Soul Patrol" recently won the Silver Ogle
award from the American Society of Science Fiction Audio.

Egads, man... Has it been that long already? Five years... Where
does the time go?! I remember coming into the Sailor Moon fandom just shy
of the procott era. I was just starting college at the time. My latest
exposure to anime (and my favorites to date) were Ronin Warriors and
Teknoman. In fact, I still maintain my little mini-shrines to this day!
(Side note... Ronin Warriors will be out on DVD in America this

Hey Aaron!

Yes, sir. That is correct. It's great to hear from you again. If I'm not
mistaken, you flew in from the midwest (Ohio, wasn't it?) for that party. Now
that was fan dedication!

I understand that you are now in Japan. That must be a lot of fun especially
for a fan of that wonderful artform known as anime. Makes me wish I had
continued past first semester Japanese class. :)

Wow! It's great to hear that David is doing so well! I would have liked to
send a belated congratulations to him, but he doesn't seem to be listed in the
appropriate directories unless he move out (his name is listed under
Northridge, CA which isn't too far from LA but that might be someone else).

Anyway, it was great to hear from you as the Procott memories suddenly come

Oh, don't get me started! :) I told people who didn't know about the procott

Keith and myself have been around for awhile now, fandom-wise, especially

Wow, what a memory trip!

I bought 16 boxes and gave them to a local charity. I remember others
getting the frosted ones, or getting the special box with two extra
pop tarts, thinking that would make an even bigger statement, but
instead just confused any statistics that may have been gathered.

I even volunteered to print part of the on-line petition and shipped
that ream of signatures off to SOS.

> What did the procott accomplish? Looking back, it started a lot of
>arguing between SOS and those who didn't like them.

1989 - Browsing through what would ultimately become my favorite comic
book store (still going there 12 years later), I stumbled onto this
amazing comic that was unlike anything I've ever seen before; an issue
of Outlanders by Johji Manabe, published by Dark Horse. It was my
first introduction to Japanese manga. I was hooked and I couldn't get
enough of it.

1993 - I bought a bootleg copy of Project A-ko at a local Star Trek
convention (Special guest Marina Sirtis [yikes! what a babe ^_-]). My
first taste of this thing called Japanese Anime.

1994 - I had already been on the Compuserve forums for years and those
served me well as I started collecting fansubbed anime. I also started
searching the Internet for all things anime, which was mostly gopher
and archie searches back then. The html web page format that we all
know and love was still in its infancy. Web page search engines did
not exist at all.

1995 - My first post to rec.arts.anime as I make an inquiry about this
amazing OVA I just watched, a 10th generation copy of Video Girl Ai. I
was also hearing news about this new anime coming to American TV
called Sailor Moon. I even posted a few times to the newly created
afsm newsgroup. I watched every episode that aired. Then, only 20
episodes into the series, it was canceled by the local Jacksonville
affiliate. I scrambled to make a deal with a fan in New York to send
me copies of the rest of the episodes.

1996 - I received the DiC Sailor Moon fan club kit with the clear
plastic duffle bag. I still carry the credit card sized plastic
membership card in my wallet even today. I kept updated via the SOS
web page and participated in the Procott. I also got my first Sailor
Moon fansubs (SuperS from VKLL) and start to discover just what an
amazing show this really is.

1997 - I heard about the proposed live action Sailor Moon movie and
make my first serious post to afsm. I started the afsm posters list
(which is sadly out of date now). This is also the year I met K-chan
and we arranged for our first even Sailor Moon Fun Day.

http://www.phoenixanime.com/smfd97.htm

1998 - I read on afsm about all the fun folks were having at A-kon.
However, alot of the message were along the lines of... I caught a
glimpse of Zoe, but we didn't get a chance to actually talk; I heard
that Jet Wolf was there, but I didn't actually meet her for myself;
You mean that was YOU?!; and so on. Since I was planning on attending
A-kon next year, I vowed that we would all have a chance to meet this
time and grok together in the wonder that is Sailor Moon. Thus, the
idea for a newsgroup party at A-kon starts to take root.

1999 - The first ever Alt.Fan.Sailor-moon party takes place at A-kon.

This is also the year that I finally watched the last episode of
Sailor Moon ever, the final episode of Sailor Moon Stars. I have now
watched 199 of the 200 episodes. I have this one last episode that was
neither dubbed nor fansubbed that I've yet to watch. I have a raw
version of that episode thanks to Andrea, but I can't bring myself to
view it yet. It's almost a mystic thing now.

2000 - Everyone is stunned by the news that Cartoon Network will be
releasing Sailor Moon Super and SuperS on American television. What a
feast of Sailor Moon, both on screen and on the newsgroup as we
discussed even the tiniest nuances of the changes made to the show.

2001 - Sailor Moon Super is finally available on VHS/DVD. Oh how very
far we have come since those days when only VKLL was there to feed our
need. It's true that I've since moved on; CCS, FY, MI, more then I can
list here. But Sailor Moon will always be the one that started it all.

> Poptarts, it's a symbol of what was. We've all come a long way
>since those days. Let's all buy a box of poptarts, not to support Sailor
>Moon, but to reminisce.

Thanks Harold, that was a wonderful trip. It really made me think hard
to place dates back on those good ole times.
