[...] Once the mirror of expectation is
shattered, the door of perception is open,
and there is something there, something
alive, looking back at us from where the
mirror once stood.

[...] My father had some secrets.
When I was about twelve, he gave me
a desk from his office to use in my
room, and after the workmen had set
it up and left, I found a photograph
stuck in a crack in the top of one
of the drawers. It was of my father.
It had been taken in what looked like
a North African setting. There was a
coffin being held up by two men in
soutanes and fezzes. Lying in the
coffin with his eyes closed and his
hands folded on his chest was my
father. Of course I was amazed by
this picture and took it to him
immediately to ask what it was.
He ripped it into small pieces and
flushed it down the toilet. He never
said a single word about it.

[...] Because I was so shocked in my
childhood, I lost my belief in the
stability of the ordinary world. I live
in a permanent state of unease, but
also a permanent state of wonder.
Ask any close-encounter witness what
is real. They will tell you at once, it
isn't what you see around you. This world
of pretense in which we live is just like
a shattered childhood, a very different
place than it appears.
[...]
Page 38; Chapter 3 - The Lost Finders

[...] On a few occasions, I had the
chance to ask a question of a visitor.
For the most part, this happened deep in
the woods at night. If I glimpsed one of
them, I would sit on the ground and collect
myself, enter a meditative state, and then
ask my question aloud.
Usually, there was no response -- in
general, I suppose, because they weren't
really there. But on some occasions, they
were, and once when I asked a question I
got a response... I asked, "What does the
universe mean to you?"
Instantly, there appeared in my mind a
bright, clear image of a closed coffin.
I cannot explain how this was done, but
can only say that these vivid, television-like
images were a common way they had of
communicating with me. I might add that they
were also among the strangest things I have
ever known. They weren't simple images.
With them came what I can only describe as a
sense of a person, an intimacy of being, that
had conveyed a taste of the personality that
had created them.
[...] I wondered how anybody could think of
our mysterious universe this way? But then I
realized that, of course, they have probably
reached its limits, or worse, discovered that
reality has no limits.
I can see the claustrophobia that would
attend to the realization that one is trapped
in an infinity that could never be escaped.
In fact, I can feel it. It's like being in a
room you can never leave, or a prison.
What would the world be like without
mysteries? It is a claustrophobic and desperate
idea. And what if it goes on forever, endlessly
repeating itself, star upon star, galaxy upon
galaxy, universe upon universe?
If so, then there is truly no escape, not
for anybody who understands this as a certainty.
For them, it is indeed a coffin, and our
innocence is a kind of freedom that must be
among the most precious things that they know.
[...]
Pages 70-73; Chapter 6 - What Might They Want?

[...] There is in physics a concept called
alternative history. It has nothing to do with
the usual speculations about Atlantis or
whatever, but rather with what appears to be the
truth about reality, that the universe is not
a single, isolated entity at all but a component
in a vast multiverse that includes parallel
universes that are literal, physical places.
Every possible outcome of every event happens
somewhere, in what is probably an infinity of
universes, forever expanding into a void that
is without end.
It is a shocking idea, and when considered
in the context of the coffin I was shown by the
elderly visitor, it becomes an infinity from
which there can be no escape: an unending,
chokingly claustrophobic emptiness.
[...] So could the existence of the multiverse
be at least some of the reason for the bizarre
effects associated with contact? Could there be
some way to cross between parallel universes?
[...] In this universe the whole anomalous
enterprise may be an apparition being projected
here by some sort of arcane technology or mental
state that enables a crossing of the invisible
gap between the worlds. So might they not be us
in another state?

Step right up the barker hollered. Learn of Love Of Life Ten Dollars
as the crowd meandered through the fair. Have your future fortune
read. His voice rings loud within my head. I looked around and
everyone was there. So stepping up dollars in hand and paying heed the
barking man I disappeared within that carny tent. The fortune teller
was a card I swear I never laughed so hard. No doubt the best ten
bucks I ever spent. I still recall his words intently and know exactly

"Equivalent Sets of Histories and
Multiple Quasiclassical Realms"
http://arxiv.org/abs/gr-qc/9404013

Authors:

Murray Gell-Mann, James B. Hartle
(Santa Fe Institute, Los Alamos,
and University of New Mexico)
(Submitted on 8 Apr 1994 (v1),
last revised 5 May 1996 (this version, v3))

Abstract:

We consider notions of physical equivalence
of sets of histories in the quantum mechanics of a
closed system. We show first how the same set of
histories can be relabeled in various ways, including
the use of the Heisenberg equations of motion and of
passive transformations of field variables. In the
the usual approximate quantum mechanics of a measured
subsystem, two observables represented by different
Hermitian operators are physically distinguished by
the different apparatus used to measure them. In the
quantum mechanics of a closed system, however, any
apparatus is part of the system and the notion of
physically distinct situations has a different
character. We show that a triple consisting of an
initial condition, a Hamiltonian, and a set of
histories is physically equivalent to another triple
if the operators representing these initial
conditions, Hamiltonians, and histories are related
by any fixed unitary transformation. We apply this
result to the question of whether the universe might
exhibit physically inequivalent quasiclassical realms
(which we earlier called quasiclassical domains), not
just the one that includes familiar experience.
We describe how the probabilities of alternative
forms, behaviors, and evolutionary histories of
information gathering and utilizing systems (IGUSes)
using the usual quasiclassical realm could in
principle be calculated in quantum cosmology, although
it is, of course, impractical to perform the
computations. We discuss how, in principle, the
probabilities of occurrence of IGUSes could be
calculated in realms distinct from the usual
quasiclassical one. We discuss how IGUSes adapted
mainly to two different realms could draw inferences
about each other using a hybrid realm consisting of
alternatives drawn from each.

Cognitive Dissonance Theory and
the Evolution of the BITE Model

In 1950, psychologist Leon Festinger summarized
the basic principle of his cognitive dissonance
theory: "If you change a person's behavior, his
thoughts and feelings will change to minimize
the dissonance." As Festinger described,
"dissonance" is the psychological tension that
arises when a person's behavior conflicts with
his beliefs. Like hunger, this tension is an
uncomfortable state that drives people to take
measures to reduce it. People prefer that their
behavior, thoughts, and emotions be mutually
consistent, and can tolerate only a certain
amount of discrepancy between these three
components of their identities.
Psychological research has shown that if any
of the three components changes, the other
two will shift to reduce the cognitive dissonance.
This tendency can manifest itself in several
different ways. For example:

[] When people behave in ways they see as either
stupid or immoral, they change their attitudes
in order to believe that their behavior is
sensible and justified.

[] People who hold opposing views are apt to
interpret the same news reports or factual
material about the disputed subject quite
differently - each sees and remembers what
supports his views, but glosses over and
forgets what would create dissonance.

[] When people who think of themselves as
reasonably humane are in a situation where
they hurt innocent people, they reduce the
resulting dissonance by marginalizing or
"putting down" their victims.

[] There is a human inclination to reduce
cognitive dissonance by rationalization.

In 1956, Festinger wrote When Prophecy Fails,
a book about a Wisconsin "flying saucer" cult.
The leader, Mrs. Keech, said she was receiving
messages sent by a superior "Guardian" from
the planet "Clarion." She reported to the press
that on December 21, there would be a great
flood and all except a chosen few would perish.
Her followers sold their homes, gave away their
money, and waited for the spaceships.

When morning came -- with no saucers and no
flood -- one might think the followers would
have become disillusioned. But when Mrs. Keech
proclaimed that the alien had witnessed their
faithful vigil and decided to spare the Earth,
most members wound up feeling more committed
to her in spite of the public humiliation.
According to Festinger, the reason for this
renewed commitment is that the cult members'
feelings and thoughts had changed to reduce
the dissonance created by their behavior.

Cognitive dissonance theory gave me a more
formal, structured way of thinking about
mind control. Of course, cognitive dissonance
theory is a gross simplification of a highly
complex phenomenon. I am sure that in the
future, there will be even better scientific
theories to help explain this phenomenon.

We, Borg

Speculations on Hive Minds as a Posthuman State

http://www.aleph.se/Trans/Global/Posthumanity/WeBorg.html

by Anders Sandberg

"The designers of our species set out to produce
a being that might be capable of an order of
mentality higher than their own. The only
possibility of doing so lay in planning a great
increase in brain organisation. But they knew
that the brain of an individual human being
could not safely be allowed to exceed a certain
weight. They therefore sought to produce the
new order of mentality in a system of distinct
and specialised brains held in 'telepathic'
unity by means of ethereal radiation. Material
brains were to be capable of becoming on some
occasions mere nodes in a system of radiation
which itself should then constitute the
physical basis of a single mind."
Olaf Stapledon, Last and First Men

Hive minds where the individual is subsumed into a
collective consciousness has been a recurring idea
in science fiction since Olaf Stapledon's influential
novels Last and First Men (1931) and Star Maker (1937),
although the concept in some sense had been suggested
by Leviathan of Thomas Hobbes (1651). They have often
in western science fiction been used as an allegory
for communism or the anonymity of industrial
civilisation, and have usually been portrayed in a
terrifying light (Nicholls 1982). The latest such
portrayal is the Borg in Star Trek: the Next Generation:
a race of bionically augmented humanoids linked together
into a collective mind, striving to assimilate every
other intelligent species into the Collective. [...]

DMT, Moses, and the Quest for Transcendence
http://sprott.physics.wisc.edu/Pickover/pc/dmt.html
by Cliff Pickover

EXCERPT

[...] The molecule DMT (N,N-Dimethyltryptamine) is a
psychoactive chemical that causes intense visions
and can induce its users to quickly enter a completely
different "environment" that some have likened to an
alien or parallel universe. The transition from our
world to theirs occurs with no cessation of
consciousness or quality of awareness. In this
environment, beings often appear who interact with
the person who is using DMT.
The beings appear to inhabit this parallel realm.
The DMT experience has the feel of reality in terms of
detail and potential for exploration. The creatures
encountered are often identified as being alienlike
or elflike. Some of the creatures appear to be
three-dimensional. Others appear to lack depth.

Author Terence McKenna has used DMT and feels that,
"Right here and now, one quanta away, there is raging
a universe of active intelligence that is transhuman,
hyperdimensional, and extremely alien...

[...] Naturally occurring DMT may play
a role in near-death experiences and
alien-abduction experiences.

Is it possible that the reality exposed to humans
by injecting DMT is in some sense a valid reality,
on par with our normal reality? Our minds, which
evolved to help us run from lions on the African
savannas, might not be engineered to see these
other realities under normal circumstances.

What is the guarantee that our minds are naturally
designed to sense the "true reality"? Perhaps there
is no guarantee. If this concept seems weird,
consider a far-fetched example. Imagine a creature
or phenomena that has been lurking among us since
the dawn of evolution. If our ancient ancestors
died every time they perceived the phenomena,
evolution would favor creatures who did not perceive
the creatures or phenomena. One might counter this
argument by saying that our modern instruments,
such as X-ray machines and cameras, should be able
to make the creatures apparent to us, even if our
unaided sensorium is not up to the task.
Reasoning further, because our instruments have
not made these realms apparent to us, the realms
must not be real. However, perhaps our traditional
instruments and theories are also not up to the task.
Or perhaps our interpretation of the instruments'
results is incomplete. Perhaps DMT is an instrument.

As a metaphor, consider infrared goggles.
A person leans on a tree. At night, we don't
see the person. Put the goggles on, and a new
reality results -- a truer reality -- and we see
the man. Similarly, is it possible that our brain
is a filter, and the use of DMT is like slipping
on infrared goggles, allowing us to perceive a
valid reality that is inches away and all around us?

In my book The Science of Aliens,
http://sprott.physics.wisc.edu/pickover/bookscp.html
I write about some of Whitley Strieber's experiences.
Strieber is famous for his book Communion, which
describes his encouters with aliens. When I had
written my book, I was somewhat "down" on Strieber
due to some of the more zany descriptions he once
gave of "aliens" he encountered. Some looked
cartoonlike, while others were the more standard
versions of aliens that most of us contemplate today.
In light of reading about DMT experiences, I can see
more of an overlap in Strieber's descriptions
and DMT-induced aliens.

According to Phillip Klass's UFO Abductions:
A Dangerous Game, Strieber appears to have had
a lifetime of unusual experiences. For example,
in April 1977 Strieber held a brief conversation
with a voice that had come over his stereo system
in his New York apartment. Streiber has also
encountered robotlike aliens, aliens with pug noses
wearing blue coveralls, an alien with an inept
cardboard imitation of a blue double-breasted suit
(complete with a white triangle handkerchief sticking
out of the pocket), and tall aliens in tan jumpsuits.
One alien had a "ridiculous excuse for a curly
black toupee on his head." Strieber once even saw
a giant, ugly insect that made him feel mothered
and loved. Another time he reported seeing the head
of a living woman named Kathie Davis on a shelf
inside a UFO. We can view these descriptions in a
new light, now that we know that DMT can often
produce visions of cartoon-like aliens.

If we were to hunt for the DMT elves, would we
direct our attention to Hawking's waveform model
of the universe or Everett's many-worlds
interpretation of quantum mechanics, or even
higher dimensions?

Is it possible that some of our human ancestors
produced more DMT than we do today? For example, many
of the ancient Bible stories describe prophets with
DMT-like experiences. (See my book The Paradox of God.)
http://sprott.physics.wisc.edu/pickover/bookscp.html
Consider as one example (Isaiah 6):

Above him were seraphs, each with six wings:
With two wings they covered their faces, with
two they covered their feet, and with two
they were flying. And they were calling
to one another:

"Holy, holy, holy is the LORD Almighty;
the whole earth is full of his glory."

At the sound of their voices the doorposts
and thresholds shook and the temple was
filled with smoke.

These sorts of ecstatic singing and repetitive
exaltations remind me of subjects who took DMT
and heard: "Now do you see? Now do you see?"
along with singing voices. (These cases are described
in Rick Strassman's book DMT: The Spirit Molecule.)

Maybe this is why the ancients seemed so in touch
with God and with miracles and visions. Maybe Moses
and Jesus had a greater rate of pineal DMT production
than most.

When I asked Rick Strassman, M.D., author of DMT:
The Spirit Molecule, about my theory, he responded:
I'm not familiar with a specific theory that we
made more DMT in the old days than now. But, are
you familiar with Jaynes' idea of the bicameral
mind--that people routinely hallucinated until
the connections between our hemispheres got evolved
out for whatever reason? I don't think hemispheric
connections would support his idea as much as might
higher levels of endogenous DMT. If indeed we made
more DMT in the past, this may have to do with the
increase in artificial light that has come upon us
in the last 1000 years or so.

Also, recall that DMT experiences sometimes
include 2-D cartoon-like characters. Often DMT
entities lack depth. Could a higher-production
of DMT in ancient people influenced artwork.
Is that part of the reason why cave paintings
and Egyptian art are so two dimensional?

One way to imagine how other realities could exist
side by side with our own is to consider the forces
that produced the diversity of senses and
intelligences right here on Earth. In a real way,
there are already alien worlds right here among us.
Every Earthly creature perceives the world in
an "alien" way. Dogs. Bees. Bats. Cats.
They experience the world with different kinds
of senses. They can smell what we cannot, they
can see what we cannot, they can hear what we cannot.
If the organisms of the Earth were somehow able to
describe their world to you, it would probably not
be recognizable to you. It would seem like the
wildest world from any science-fiction story.
Moreover, if you were able to describe the world
to another species, they would "see" no resemblance
to their own. Our sense of reality would be different;
our way of thinking would be different, and even the
practical technology we would produce would be
different. We do not have to contemplate aliens
or science fiction to imagine alienlike senses
and bodies. The animal world of Earth is so diverse
and full of different senses, that creatures are
already walking among us possessing "alien"
awarenesses beyond our understanding.

By studying the creatures of the Earth, we can
hypothesize on the diversity of realities here
on Earth. Aliens would no doubt see a different
world than we do. To best understand this, consider
the Indian luna moth, which has a wingspread of
about 10 cm (4 inches). To our eyes, both the male
and female moths are light green and
indistinguishable from each other.
But the luna moths themselves perceive in the
ultraviolet range of light, and to them the
female looks quite different from the male.
Other creatures have a hard time seeing the
moths when they rest on green leaves, but
luna moths are not camouflaged to one another
since they see each other as brilliantly colored.

"Ram Dass" wrote:
Let me share with you this little model I've worked
out about who we are as human beings. I call it the
"Three-Plane Consciousness Model." If I were to take a
picture of who I see you to be, the picture would show
three "I's" ---three different levels of who you are,
planes on which you have an identity.
Number One is what I call ego, that's the "I" we all
know very well, the plane of the body, mind, and
personality; of all those things we think we are.
Number Two I call the soul; the soul measures time not
in days and years but in incarnations, and it's the "I"
that was around before we as egos were born and that
will be around after we as egos die.
And Number Three is ... just Number Three. We all
have different names for it, and wars are fought over
what to call it, so I avoid all that by just calling it
Number Three.
I see our task as learning to live on more than one of
those planes simultaneously, experiencing ourselves as
egos and souls at the same time. And since "you gotta
be one to see one," once we are resting in our souls,
then we will see others as souls as well. Then when we
look into another person's we'll say, "Are you in there?
I'm in here. Far out!"
When we are able to look behind even that identity as
soul, we'll see that we have still another identity
because we are also Number Three.
That's the mystic "I," because in Number Three there's
actually only one of us. Your Number Three isn't merely
like my Number Three---They're the same thing.

A steam turbine is a mechanical device
that extracts thermal energy from pressurized
steam, converts it into rotary motion, and is
particularly suited to drive an electrical
generator -- about 80% of all electricity
generation in the world is by use of steam
turbines: nuclear, coal, gas all use
steam to generate electricity -- factor in
the automobile's gas burning internal
combustion engine, and even space flight,
which burns liquid fuel to achieve lift,
and one cannot help but notice that we are:
SOME FREAKY FIRE APES STUCK IN THE STEAM AGE!

"Could the early years of the twenty-first century
see the emergence of a new Jesus or a new Moses [or a
new Mahdi] to make sense of our puny, worthless lives
and hand down from above a new set of commandments?
Will the prophesied 'return of the Great Initiate'
become a reality, thanks to some carefully contrived

will be backed by a massive politico-religious

infrastructure of which is already in place."

The first brain level to evolve, which I call
"first-line consciousness," is the instinctive
level. Largely located in the brainstem and
hypothalamus, it regulates vital functions.

The limbic system is the seat of the emotional
"second-line consciousness," where our feelings
reside. It is mediated by the brain's limbic
system and temporal lobe.

On the "third line" or cortical level, we reason
and develop ideas, integrating the input from the
two lower levels, providing the meaning of experience.

Yes.
Yes, yes...
As I lay there in the operating theater,
my rib cage splayed open like a sidewalk
service elevator, tubes, wires, instruments
of mysterious metallurgy sustaining my vitals,
the Flying Squirrel looming, ever looming,

Whiskey Tango Foxtrot?! Huh??!!
Where Am I? Oh, right: Nowhere.
