First it went back down again for a while, and now there's something that looks
like a shopping site there. Does anyone know if this is just temporary?

Funny (well, not really) story. If Daimao doesn't get a chance to see the
thread, I suppose I'll step in and explain.

The people whom the toriorg staff paid to renew the domain name royally screwed
up, and for some time, there's actually been no ownership of the domain name.
In the meantime, some little turd stepped in and made a nice little banner site
for himself after purchasing the domain name for himself.

When it comes down to it, the toriorg staff should still rightfully own the
domain name. Just a matter of figuring out how to go about getting it back.

What EX said. We realized why the site had been down for so long (several
weeks) last Monday and took steps with our Domain Registration Service to
remedy the situation. As I understand it, they agreed to credit us for the
lost time and were in the process of directing the site to animenet.org,
who is graciously hosting us.

On Wednesday, someone else registered the name for themselves. How they
were able to do this is still unclear, and we have not yet heard from our
DRS concerning it. We contacted the new registrants, and here's what they
had to say:

"Thank you for your interest in Toriyama.org. This name went back into
circulation because the registration fees weren't paid. We realized the
name had potential (as it had traffic going to the name), so we bought it
and have had developing a site around it as a goal. I am sorry to hear
that you did not intend on letting it go back into circulation. We would
be happy to discuss reselling this name to you and getting it back into
your use immeadiately.
"We have some costs accrued so far with the name and planned
developement. They aren't alot, however, we would like to be compensated.
Please make us a reasonable offer and we will transfer the name to you
immeadiately."

Things took an ugly turn after that, and we are now contemplating
litigation, so I probably shouldn't say too much more (like how a
long-established, well-respected, non-profit dot-org domain could have
suddenly gone commercial and started shilling "the Best Deals on The
Internet!").

in stone...
] Perhaps you should have updated your site more often (i.e. more frequently than
] once every 6 months), then this might not have happened.

I'd like to see you try to update a fansite where you have to work 8
hours a day, 5 days a week, weekends taken over by parental duties,
hanging out with friends, wife, family, or having a real life. Oh, and
for the other parts...

See if anyone can update a fansite whose hour consists of 10 hours of
school, several hours of part-time job, then you have to fix your dinner,
lunch, or meal, bathe, study and do your homework, and _IF_ you have any
extra spare time, check emails, read your book, watch TV, or hang out with
friends. Gosh, can YOU handle that kind of schedule?

Ok, if I'm wrong, then I'm sorry, but you might
want to try Cybersquatting if you have legitamate
reason, and I believe you do. They have probably
been trying to get that domain name for a while
when they noticed you were down. Now they are
trying to price gouge you and I'm pretty sure that
this is a form of fraud. Unless they can prove
that they have actually been trying to make a
site, with either receipts or estimates or
whatever (some form of evidence that they have
actually been doing what they say) then you can
sue them for fraud (I'm pretty sure, you might
want to check a lawyer). I'm pretty sure about all
this. But like I said, talk to a lawyer first,
because he will probably be able to nail this
guy's ass to the wall with all sorts of crap. Not
to mention the ever classic emotional stress
multi-million dollar lawsuit.
