I had an interesting chat today with Sam
Pate, the first radio announcer to break the
assassination. He was at I-35 Stemmons and
Highline only a stone's throw north of DP..
He was going to follow the motorcade to the
Trade Mart, then Parkland Hospital, but opted
to go back to DP when Sherriff Bill Decker
came on the DPD radio channel and told his
men to get over to the railroad area and look
for shells.. Pate later went to DPD HQs and
was within "6 feet of Oswald." Sam tells me
he asked Oswald "Did you kill the President"
and Oswald responded, "No I didn't kill
anybody." He was also subpoenaed by the Jack
Ruby Defense team in the Jack Ruby trial.. We
have *MANY* mutual friends and acquaintances.
..And since we live near (7 miles) each other
we plan to get together soon.
Sam Pate had called to tell me "You are
right and the other guy is wrong" on the
acoustics debate in AA re myself and Herbert..
But we haven't discussed that at all yet..
Too many other very intriguing things to
discuss. I did ask him to post on the JFK NG
but Sam said, "Nobody would believe me." A
nice guy, and I have much more to ask him..

Ed, if possible, would be interested if Sam Pate was present to see
LHO give the fist & handcuff in the air pose & his take on what LHO
was trying to demonstrate as he did this, if anything.

Great post ed and good question Wigg. 3 times during his
incarceration that weekend, Oswald raised his right fist in a facist
salute. How do we know this? Quite simply, he only did it when the
media was around...and he always had that smirk on his face. Per
Robert Oswald "Lee always smirked when he knew something you didn't".
On his deathbed, in the ambulance, one of the very last things Oswald
did according to Officer Combest was "raise his right
fist"......before dying.

Sam Pate is the KBOX radio reporter who is heard on the famous, widely-
heard report --- "Something has happened in the motorcade route....I
repeat, something has happened in the motorcade route! We understand
there has been a shooting!"

I didn't realize until just a year or two ago that Pate's famous
broadcast was not done live at the scene. What we hear every time we
hear that broadcast is a re-creation done in the KBOX studios either
later on November 22 or the next day, November 23.

In 2006, I talked with KRLD's Bob Huffaker about this very subject of
the KBOX coverage. There seems to be confusion about just exactly what
happened with the KBOX radio coverage that day. I've heard rumors that
someone was fired at KBOX because nothing got on the air live due to
some kind of foul-up at the studio or with the on-scene reporters
(Pate and Jenkins).

I'm still confused to this day about the exact details regarding the
KBOX assassination coverage. Perhaps, Ed, you can clear this up if you
talk to Sam again.

More info on KBOX's 11/22 coverage can be found below (about halfway
down the page):

Wowsers David!

The site below is pure *dynamite* and very well
stocked with tons of KBOX (And Sam Pate) info!
http://www.knus99.com/kbox1480pt2.html

Here's an excerpt:
------- ON: ----------
"President Kennedy's limousine just minutes before shots rang out

On November 22, 1963, KBOX radio news scored one its biggest scoops
when it was the first broadcast entity to report that shots had been
fired at President Kennedy's motorcade as it moved through Dealey
Plaza en route to the Trade Mart where the Chief Executive was
scheduled to make a speech. KBOX was the only radio station that had
a mobile news unit broadcasting live in the motorcade.

Joe Long, later with KBOX but news director at KLIF at that point, was
serving as the pool reporter that day for radio stations covering the
presidential visit to Dallas.

Newsman Sam Pate was in KBOX mobile news unit number 4 at the rear of
the motorcade while newsman Ron Jenkins (McAlister) patiently waited
in KBOX unit #6 on Stemmons Freeway, just above the Triple Underpass,
through which the presidential motorcade was to pass out of Dealey
Plaza on its route to the Trade Mart.

The plan was for Jenkins to continue with the KBOX live coverage of
the motorcade as it emerged from the Triple Underpass and approached
Stemmons Freeway, and continue with that live coverage until the
President reached the Trade Mart.

KBOX news director Bill Hampton and newsmen Dick Moore and Karl King
were staffing the KBOX newsroom at 12:30 PM when all hell broke
loose.

In a taped recording, condensed recreation of the reporting that day,
Pate describes the presidential limousine turning onto Elm Street and
proceeding toward the Triple Underpass, en route to the Trade Mart
when he suddenly reports: "it...it...it appears as though something has
happened in the motorcade route...something...I repeat has happened in the
motorcade...there are numerous people running up the hill alongside Elm
Street there by Stemmons...several police officers are rushing up the
hill at this time...standby...just a moment please."

Pate subsequently reports that nearby Parkland Hospital has been
advised to stand by for the victim of a severe gunshot wound. The
newsman described the speeding, sleek black Lincoln Continental as it
raced over the concrete lanes of Stemmons Freeway, Secret Service
agents visible and armed with high-power weapons.

Vivid descriptions of the motorcade and its occupants on the remainder
of the high-speed trip to Parkland are described by Jenkins, who
followed the motorcade to the hospital from the point where he joined
it on Stemmons Freeway, just above the Triple Underpass.

KBOX then reported that there were unconfirmed reports that Governor
John Connally and President Kennedy were hit by gunfire in Dealey
Plaza. Pate described the scene of pandemonium after which there were
further reports from Jenkins that confirmed that a Catholic priest had
been summoned for the fatally-wounded president.
------- OFF ------

BTW I knew of most of those radio personalities
and Sam Pate said him and Carl King were fired
for budget reasons right after the assassination.

Compare the film footaqe as Oswald is brought in to the "raised fist" photo.
A police officer raised his arm, he was handcuffed to Oswald, and Oswald's
arm with a fist came up with his.

Tony it certainly appears based on my input from
Sam in the last 48 hrs, that you are mistaken on
your claim that he manufactured a "hoax." Sam Pate
tells me and I believe him, that it was Ron Jenkins,
not him who fabricated the "Something has happened!"
audio.. Although Jenkins was scheduled to be at the
Trade Mart and Pate was stationed just 2 minutes
north of DP on Stemmons, Jenkins never showed up.

I am scheduled to meet Sam Pate at his home on 9-6-07
at 1 PM. Since I have not made sure all my ducks are
lined up yet on exactly what Pate feels about 11-22-63
I will bracket the attribution to Sam Pate as I
understand them so far:

-----SAM PATE ACCOUNT(SUMMARIZED & PARAPHRASED)-----
ON:
Ron Jenkins created the "Something has happened!!"
audio even though he was not at DP or the Trade Mart
as scheduled.. BTW I asked Pate why KBOX would assign
two reporters to the same area and it was at this
point I Sam explained that there was two different
locations; Pate was 2 minutes north of DP on Stemmons
I-35 and Ron Jenkins was scheduled to be at the Trade
Mart.. Jenkins was a no-show and blew a once in a
career chance for an ultra-scoop.. According to Sam,
what Jenkins did was to then fabricate the infamous,
"Something has happened!!" audio. He told me the
reason Jenkins got caught was that he embellished the
audio with transplanted siren sounds from another
location.. The sirens were too loud it seems and the
there were also car honks infused in the transplanted
sirens!! We both chuckled as Sam gave me verbal
facsimiles of Ron Jenkins failed fabrication,
"WWEEEeeeeeee.. WEEEeeeeeeee.. Honk! WWWeeeeeeee.."
That's how Ron Jenkins, not Sam Pate got caught.

HERE'S SOME OTHER INPUT FROM PATE:
1) It was 12:29 PM not 12:30 PM as is widely believed.
I told Sam that my friend James Tague had made the
same precise observation. Tague looked up at the
Hertz clock on top of the TSBD and verified it read,
"12:29." I told Pate and he agreed with conviction.

2) Pate says him and Carl King were fired Saturday
morning by KBOX because of budget limitations.. I
asked Sam why in hell would they fire two news
people after the crime of the century had just been
committed in their own back yard?!? He explained that
KBOX was almost always in financial trouble because
of trade-off deals which are common in the industry.
He gave me one example of a car dealer on Garland Rd.,
which received hundreds of minutes of "free" time and
in return a certain member of the KBOX hierarchy
wound up with a "free" car rather than money, the
life blood of any company..

3) OKAY HERE WE GO with what I know will raise some
eyebrows.. But it's Sam Pate's account, not mine: Sam
says Kennedy was hit in the head by a pistol (large
caliber) with a silencer on it!!.. From the Elm Street
storm drain!! He also explains that the man's name was
"Bruno" and he was a member of the mob. (!?) I immediately
asked Sam, "How in the heck did you find that out?!?" He
explained that he had connections with mob members and
that was his source.

4) SAM ALSO SAID that Jack Ruby was better connected
than people think with the Chicago mob.. Ruby apparently
was involved with the numbers racket and strong arm stuff
for Chicago mobsters.. (!?) It may have been related to
vending machine extortions which Sam mentioned but that
might have been another subject,, We have talked for
several hours and will meet tomorrow and hopefully hear
some of his audio tapes.

5) SPEAKING OF AUDIO tapes, the reason Sam Pate initially
called me was to tell me that, "You are right and the
other guy is wrong" in reference to my ongoing acoustics
dialog with Herb.

6) AS FOR OSWALD'S RAISED FIST: Two NG members have asked
me to clarify that with Pate since he was there at DPD HQ
and 6 feet from Oswald.. Pate tells me that the account I
suggested that Oswald's hand-cuffed fist was simultaneously
raised when the DPD officer he was cuffed to raised his own
fist was most likely correct.. I said, "That's what I
thought.. You don't just go thrusting your hand-cuffed fist
in the air with a cop cuffed to it." I think that issue is
solved.

7) IMPORTANT & INTERESTING: Pate tells me he was 6 feet
from Oswald and asked him. "Did you shoot the President?"
.. To which Oswald responded, "No I didn't shoot anyone."

8) Sam also tells me that my friend and fellow employee
Travis Linn
at Channel 8 WFAA-TV was not as squeaky clean as I once
thought. I told him I had regretfully discovered same
about 4,5 years ago when I tried to clear his name..
Unfortunately I wound up *proving* Travis Linn had
lied.. And I posted the details in alt.assassination.jfk
When I told my wife of 36 yrs about what Sam had said
(details later) she immediately said, "Ed, Travis Linn
was a lot sneakier than you may think.. I was never a
fan." BTW my wife was the one who categorized & labeled
all the JFK audios, videos on a 350-400 sq. ft. room of
boxes and boxes of same.. The room was frozen and SEALED
by authorities. I asked her if it was the FBI or CIA and
she told me she didn't know who sealed the room but that
those two were possibly the one(s). Incredibly, Sam Pate
was aware of this sealed room. Again my *WIFE* was the
one who finally categorized everything in the JFK room..
An estimated 2, 3 month job I believe..

-----SAM PATE ACCOUNT(SUMMARIZED & PARAPHRASED)-----

Hopefully much more to follow..

the HSCA. I'll try to ask him today.
Here's a post I made on the HSCA findings:

BTW Herb, do you believe there is an actual
audio recording of the assassination? If so,
who has this assassination recording?

> Newsman Sam Pate was in KBOX mobile news unit number 4 at the rear of the motorcade - NOPE
Sam was at Love Field when the plane arrived. Then went to Stemmons Freeway by the Trade Mart, where he was reporting from the mobile unit, based on what he heard on the police Radio in the unit.

> while newsman Ron Jenkins (McAlister) patiently waited in KBOX unit #6 on Stemmons Freeway, just above the Triple Underpass, through which the presidential motorcade was to pass out of Dealey Plaza on its route to the Trade Mart. - Nope
Ron was having lunch somewhere off Industrial, then headed to parkland. Ron Missed the initial report.

> KBOX news director Bill Hampton and newsmen Dick Moore and Karl King were staffing the KBOX newsroom at 12:30 PM when all hell broke loose. - NOPE
Bill Hampton was not at the station until later.

> Sam Pate said him and Karl King were fired for budget reasons right after the assassination.- NOPE
King was chewed out for leaving the mic feeding the AP wire and tying up the line. Sam was fired for budgets reasons, but the truth is Hampton lost his cool and over reacted. Sam was hired back when Coolpix records called Hampton and wanted recordings from that day. Funny how that worked out.
