one of the most obvious ways to determine the difference between AT and
ATX - The AT has two plugs (single pin type) to connect the power to the
motherboard. The ATX has only one plus -2 rows of pins

Hi,
One way: Check on the powersupply if it say something about ATX.

If it's ATX, there will be a long open rectangle betweenthe slot covers,
and the power supply, long along the motherboard surface. That will be
where the built
on ports on the motherboard are.

You can also tell by the dimensions....Crap...i can't remember what they
should be but there was some web page (in www.cnet.com maybe?) that lists
the dimensions.

ah-hah. found it. go to
http://www.help.com/cat/1/48/hto/109/1.html?tag=st.hp.cat.bb . It is a help
file on updating motherboards. Read number 2 (it talks about the form of
your mb) and then click on "comparison of form factor". I had a gateway and
had no idea but i measured the mb and it fit the atx measurement and sure
enough, it actually is atx.

Hi Bill,

Check the ON/OFF switch of your casing. For ATX casing, the cable
connect to the ON/OFF switch are a lot thinner.

A) An ATX case has only 7 (max) expansion card slots.
B) An ATX case has a ~1.5" x ~4" slot above the 7th expansion slot.
C) An ATX case has a low current, momentary SPST on/off switch on the
front panel, which connects to the motherboard (not to the PS.)
D) An ATX power supply will have one 20-pin (two rows of ten) connector
to the motherboard.
E) An ATX case will have its keyboard and mouse connectors as part of
the above described ~1.5" x ~4" slot in the case. No separate holes.

when you click shutdown, when it says it is now safe to turn off
your computer after 4 seconds it should turn its self off.

Sorry, but I think dimensions is of no help in determining if the case is AT
or ATX.

AT vs. ATX cases are very easy to discriminate.

On an AT case, knock-outs for the serial and printer connectors are
almost always vertical. On an ATX case, these connectors are an actual
part of the motherboard and are horizontal (near the bottom of the case).

Also, the power supply/motherboard connector on an ATX case is totally
different from that in an AT. An AT uses the familiar two-section in-line
power plug(s). ATX uses a two row, Molex type, 20-pin connector.

Hope this helps.
