<q>
Drops of Light is a puzzle game not far removed from the classic 15-peg
puzzle and the assortment of box-pushing puzzles, inspired by Chinese
checkers with a twist of color physics. The game features original
artwork (a blend of 3D rendering and simple 2D effects) and music
(variations on a fugue), tying everything together with a crystalline
theme. Drops of Light is a pure puzzle -- unlike most mind-bending games
today, nothing is left to chance and there are no time limits, just you,
the puzzle, and however long you need to figure it out before driving
yourself insane.

<q>
DX-Ball is a free arcade game by Michael P. Welch. It has got to be the
best Breakout-style game ever. The object of the game is to bounce your
ball around the screen with your paddle, breaking bricks, collecting
points and power-ups as you go. Once all the bricks are destroyed, you
move to the next level. If you drop the ball, you lose a life. The game
has 50 different levels, lots of power-ups and in-game music.

Program: Elf Bowling
Company: Nstorm (was NVision Design)
Ware: (Freeware)
http://www.nstorm.com/

Elf Bowling 1 is lots of fun, I haven't tried the others. More info (and
download links):

http://www.gamehippo.com/recommended/1620.shtml

Elf Bowling
What happened? The North Pole used to be such a happy place. Now the
elves are on strike, and Santa's not going to put up with it! This is a
very funny bowling game, in which the elves are the pins! Help Santa
teach these rebel elves a lesson. Hey, Jolly Old Saint Nick needs to
relieve stress too, you know.
STAFF RATING 9/10

Elf Bowling 2 - Elves in Paradise. This is a sequel to Elf Bowling 1.
Same hilarously animated characters and same fun gameplay! If you
enjoyed Elf Bowling 1, then you will equally enjoy this sequel. It's
loosely based on the rules of shuffleboard - but in this game you hurl
elves down the ships deck. The closer to the far edge the higher you
score. If you manage to hang an elf off the deck edge that will give you
even higher score. Clearly Santa has no respect for elves! Otherwise,
why would he use them to play shuffleboard? For 1 or 2 player. To
complicate the matter, as you progress the levels, the ship will rock
back and forth more and more which makes the "shuffleboard" a tad
trickier. The voices from the elves are really funny too! I would not
recommend this game for younger kids due to some graphical content.
STAFF RATING 9/10

http://www.gamehippo.com/recommended/822.shtml

NStorm is back for the third time, with Elf Bowling 3. This year Santa
cannot use his faithful sleigh so he has to teach the elves to fly.
Santa chooses to use a super-bra as a sling. The game is full of
silliness and randy jokes from the elves, such as "Do you want to see my
North Pole?" So this sequel of Elf Bowling doesn't relate to bowling
really. As the elves are engaged in brawly whackiness, it may evoke a
couple of laughs the first time you play the game - although not as much
as in the previous two Elf Bowling games. This game was created as a
promotion for TechTV.
STAFF RATING 6/10

The author has several quiz/game programs that are education oriented.

FlipFlop is a game with an educational twist. . .

"A game similar to Othello with additional features: Up to 4 people may
play simultaneously and a study feature allows you to train different
topics by playing."

Is it the one I'm thinking of where the bubbles go 'bom'?
And look worried when vulnerable?

If so, there's really not that much to miss - you can get stupidly
high scores just by refusing to advance up the levels. But it is very
pretty :-)
There's a similar buyware game that is a better game but not so much
fun to look at, but I don't know of a freeware one.

Program: I've Got Some Balls
Author: Sebastian Aaltonen
Ware: Freeware
http://www.caiman.us/scripts/fw/f822.html

"A 3D ball game in which your goal is to control a small ball through
dangerous levels. In order to pass the level you must collect all the
diamonds in the level. Every level is an interesting combination of
speed and action. Heights, traps, loops, jumps, easy, hard.. you name
it, it's all here."

http://www.gamehippo.com/cat/top_1_13.shtml

"This 3D action game rocks! Maneuver a ball through 12 challenging
levels, gathering all diamonds along the way. The ball, which changes
color when it passes through a colored gate, can be red, green, yellow,
or blue. Each color has a unique ability. Use the space bar to activate
the ball's special power. It takes some time to get used to controlling
the ball, so don't give up! This game features DirectX compatibility
with all cards, 3d Studio level converters for map making, multiple
resolution settings, outstanding 3D graphics, high quality sound, and
more! It even has a special option to accommodate "AMD 3D Now!" and
"SSE" users."

Simple Sudoku makes high quality puzzles that are symmetrical, have a

Each puzzle is generated randomly so there is an almost limitless selection.

Not only does Simple Sudoku make challenging puzzles, it also provides
tools to help solve them - removing the drudgery but not the fun.
Keeping track of possible values for blank cells (candidates), providing
filters and color markers are just some of the tools available to make
solving even those really tricky puzzles possible. Also, if you ever get
really stuck, Simple Sudoku can get you started again with a discreet
hint (without giving everything away).

Actually, the zip file downloaded from there seemed to have (about) the

Susan, I have not followed these threads and I'm not sure if this is
relevant and worth mentioning again (but I seem to remember it was
received favourably):

<q>

Simon Tatham's Portable Puzzle Collection

http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/puzzles/

"A collection of small computer programs which implement one-player
puzzle
games. All of them run natively on Windows, on Unix (GTK), and on Mac OS
X
(10.3). It's also been ported to the Palm.

I wrote this collection because I thought there should be more small
desktop
toys available: little games you can pop up in a window and play for two
or
three minutes while you take a break from whatever else you were doing.
And
I was also annoyed that every time I found a good game on (say) Unix, it
wasn't available the next time I was sitting at a Windows machine, or
vice
versa; so I arranged that everything in my personal puzzle collection
will
happily run on both those platforms and more."

Note: there is only one Windows Help file for all games.
So it's best to place all games in one folder to get to the help file

Susan, I have not followed these threads and I'm not sure if this is
relevant and worth mentioning again (but I seem to remember it was
received favourably):

<q>

Simon Tatham's Portable Puzzle Collection

http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/puzzles/

"A collection of small computer programs which implement one-player
puzzle games. All of them run natively on Windows, on Unix (GTK), and on
Mac OS X (10.3). It's also been ported to the Palm.

I wrote this collection because I thought there should be more small
desktop toys available: little games you can pop up in a window and play
for two or three minutes while you take a break from whatever else you
were doing.
And I was also annoyed that every time I found a good game on (say)
Unix, it wasn't available the next time I was sitting at a Windows
machine, or vice versa; so I arranged that everything in my personal
puzzle collection will happily run on both those platforms and more."

Packrat here. I had saved a previous post of yours. Now I've downloaded
the games too. If you don't here from me for a while. . . ;)

Vegard has posted about another nice collection ("This is one of the
best!"):

Program: Patience Pack
Author: Maurice Abraham
Ware: (Freeware)
http://patpack.abraham.me.uk/

"Patience Pack (freeware) is a selection of 120 skill-testing card
games, dice games and puzzles written for various age groups.

Many are classic games such as Klondike, Yahtzee, Freecell, Mastermind,
Snakes & Ladders and Mind Sweeper. Other games are original, including
Enigma, Neural Net, Armor of God and Lost World."

Comes in three versions:

Patience Pack 8.0 for Windows 98 / NT / 2000 / ME / XP / 2003
Patience Pack 8.0 is written using Microsoft.NET 1.1

Note the *huge* savings in size vs. the Java version below. ;)

Patience Pack 6.0 for Windows 3.1 / 95 (60 games)

I may never return. . . <VBG>

but if I do it might be to post about Scrabble "stuff". I've just barely
started trying out this helper app. Talk about powerful. . .

unfortunately the author of tinywindows games was really un-clear as to
why he shut his site down and I don't think that was the real violation
here, susan, if that were the case then those same guys would've gone
after the developers of the MAME and MESS emulators as well (tinyemu
games did not use any proprietary roms just the look / feel of the games
IIRC). he may have just gotten tired of it and need "a way out" as some
other developers (remember overware systems who just stopped developing
software and even stopped his website altogether?)

I have this version on *ALL* of my computers :-)

another nice collection is from PC Whole Ware (same concept just
individual games) the same people who brought us Electronic Greeting
Card Maker:

http://www.pcww.com/web_mat/freecard.html

but unfortunately their card game collection is not found on the site (I
have it if interested).

Hi *ProteanThread* ! :-)

I'm interested. I have not given up my "dream" about updating my sites
some day (don't know when...) and would like to check these out for my
"Freeware Solitaire" site.

Could you send to "my name" with two dots at the appropiate places at
gmail dot com?

regards from vegard

I read that as a message from the hosting site (not the author). The
host site may be over-zealous. . . dunno.

but. . .

The "Arcade Machine Emulators" also have very special requirements:
http://web.archive.org/web/20030501044223/http://www.tinywindowsgames.com/

for example:
Tiny Pacman / Ms Pacman
http://web.archive.org/web/20030608044705/www.tinywindowsgames.com/tiny/pacman_instructions.htm

<q>
Tiny Pacman is an emulator. You will need the original PacMan or
MsPacman ROMs in order to play this game. The ROMs should be placed in
the folder that Tiny PacMan is being run from.

Now that I did NOT know, thanks for the clarification Susan; If we
manage to get the remaining collection together I can host it on my website.

Hi,

I used to help run the tinywindowsgames.com website, and contributed
some of the games. I'm sure I've got the files kicking about
somewhere. If you want me to try to find the original file for any of
the games, drop me an email and I'll see what I can find.

Nintendo reported us to some software theft agency over "Tiny Donkey
Kong" (I forget what the agency was called) and that got us threatened
us with scary emails. We tried to protest that we just supplied
emulators, and not ROM images, but it fell on deaf ears and we were
too young and intimidatable to stand our ground. It's a shame, since
it was a popular site in its day.
