I never make it to the larger stores of other supermarket chains.
Have they also been making an effort recently to promote bottle
conditioned beer?

Sainsbury's now have three own brand BC beers: a trappist ale,
a hefe weisbeer and a new "Bottle Conditioned Ale".

If I remember rightly it costs 1-59 UKP for 500ml. Well, I liked
it. It could perhaps have been a little more strongly flavoured
but I imagine they are trying to encourage the less adventurous
beer drinkers to get the BC habit. It is essentially a Best Bitter
which gives me the impression of having a little too much white
granulated in the recipe. Rather like the results you get with a
good quality hopped malt extract beer kit.

Well worth trying.

Not that I've noticed; in particular, Tesco's is depressing; it was only
about two years ago that it had an astonishingly good range of bottled
beer for a supermarket. It still has the same range...

Doubt it. I would suggest that it's more likely that their motivation is
to make money. However, whoever the buyer is who's getting all these beers
relabelled as Sainsbury's knows what they're doing; it's rapidly becoming
a very good basic selection of beer styles, and they're undercutting the
off-licence price of the originals.

Any idea who makes the Bottle Conditioned Ale? We've identified the 'Belgian
Ale', and the Trappist, and the French lager, and the Biere de Garde, but
I'm mystified by 'Blackfriars Porter' and some of the others.

Would you (re)post these identifications please

Belgian Ale is made for Sainsbury's by Boon, and the Trappist is
Koeningshoeven. The French lager is the identical beer to the one they
used to sell as Biere d'Alsace, though I forget the brewery. They also
sell Fischer Lager relabelled as Sainsburys; this is quite easy to identify
as the bottles still say Fischer. I *did* know who makes the Biere de Garde
but have forgotten; they were mentioned in a Beer Hunter article in What's
Brewing about a year or so ago. I got email today suggesting that
Caledonian brew a beer for Sainsbury's; the Porter was suggested but I'm
not sure that 'Blackfriars Porter' is a good name for a beer brewed in
Edinburgh...

Hope this helps.
