Somebody who's self importance is so GREAT, that they have
difficulty seeing beyond themselves. As opposed to someone
who has no difficulty seeing beyond themselves, and is simply
sure of themselves. It's all a matter of personal perspective or
view (vision) of the world we all must live in.

What a Bigot is NOT : A person who takes a stand for that which is
righteous, moral, and non-deviant who rubs a Wrong-doer up the
wrong way.

When and where I grew up. many a person
took a stand for what they strongly felt
to be righteous, moral and decent -- often
backing up their stance with quotes from
the Bible.

What righteous, moral, and non-deviant
principle were these good Christians
standing up for? In the words of
the governor of a state adjacent
to mine: "SEGREGATION TODAY!
SEGREGATION TOMORROW!
SEGREGATION FOREVER!"

Alabama’s new Republican governor, Robert Bentley, offers up a
message of tolerance and inclusion for Martin Luther King Day:

”I was elected as a Republican candidate. But once I became
governor … I became the governor of all the people. I intend to
live up to that. I am color blind,” Bentley said in a short speech
given about an hour after he took the oath of office as governor.

So far, so good! Very appropriate for the occasion. But then…

“There may be some people here today who do not have living within
them the Holy Spirit,” Bentley said. ”But if you have been adopted
in God’s family like I have, and like you have if you’re a
Christian and if you’re saved, and the Holy Spirit lives within you
just like the Holy Spirit lives within me, then you know what that
makes? It makes you and me brothers. And it makes you and me
brother and sister.”

Bentley added, ”Now I will have to say that, if we don’t have the
same daddy, we’re not brothers and sisters.

"So anybody here today who has not accepted Jesus Christ as their
savior, I’m telling you, you’re not my brother and you’re not my
sister, and I want to be your brother."

Well, I’m sure all the Jews and Muslims and Hindus and Buddhists
and atheists in Alabama were really thrilled to hear that he
only considers Christians to be family… but he really wants them
to convert so they can be his brothers and sisters too! Why,
that sounds almost exactly the same as what Reverend King said in
his I Have A Dream speech:

I have a dream that one day, down in Alabama, with its vicious
racists, with its governor having his lips dripping with the words
of interposition and nullification; one day right there in Alabama,
little black boys and black girls will be able to join hands with
little white boys and white girls as sisters and brothers.

Sure, he forgot to mention that the little black boys and girls and
the little white boys and girls are all Christians, but it’s
totally implied!

I would be remiss to leave out this awesome attempt at damage control:

Bentley’s communications director, Rebekah Caldwell Mason, when
asked about Bentley’s comments said, ”He is the governor of all the
people, Christians, non-Christians alike.”

Well, yeah, that’s kind of the job, isn’t it? But there’s an awful
lot of daylight between “governor” and “brother,” and it’s awfully
hard to imagine that that’s going to mollify very many of
Bentley’s heathen non-brothers and non-sisters.

This is one of the biggest reasons why the religious right is
so infuriating: their sense of compassion is ridiculously narrow.

If you’re a self-sufficient member of the tribe in good
standing, they’re there for you. But if you’re an outsider, or even
a fellow Christian conservative who doesn’t have a decent job
(or any job) and can’t afford health insurance or a quality school
for your kids… well, the Lord had better provide, because their
vision of government won’t.

On the subject of "HELL" The Jewish and Mormon
accounts of "a dark place where you go before ascending into
the light" seem to coincide. The Jews call it "shoel" which
roughly translated means "beneath the earth" a place of
entombment before the afterlife. Or in other words "grave"
I guess somewhere in that translation is some meaning of
Hell, especially if you add Greek Mythology to it.

See that is just it, Christians are confused as to what
they actually believe, their religion is made up of so many
different beliefs. The Christmas Tree, the Easter Bunny,
Halloween, etc, etc, etc..

If you want to find out what the Mormons teach, don't
bother asking a wannabe. They have something they call
the "Institution" which teaches the real thing. Opinions
within the LDS DO vary. Mainly because of converts
from Christianity.

The majority of bigots, past and present, have tried to
hide their vile hatreds beneath the wrappings of rectitude

If I may....
Calling an individual out for being so self-important that he or she
can't imagine someone else's beliefs (or nonbeliefs) are indefensible
is perfectly acceptable.

Calling out a broad class of people attached to some label (e.g.
"Christians") and disparaging the whole group for having that trait,
is prejudicial and an act of bigotry.

There's not a lot of difference between you saying, "When oh when will

Christians lose their self importance that they can't see beyond their

own religion?" and someone else saying "When oh when will black folks
stop being so lazy and shiftless and get off welfare." Just because
you've encountered a number of people with that trait, does not give
you the right to ascribe that trait to a labeled group.

I'm sure you can see that.

There are two different ways of
interpreting the phrase "simple
minded" Where and in which
way are you using it?

Personally it's a phrase I
don't use because it can be
misconstrued.

Obviously.

And yet they expect us to fall down with the sudden realization of how
wrong we've been, that believing in a magic entity with absolutely zero

It boggles the mind.

Which of your civil rights have been violated by Obama?

I have lawyers in the federal courts handling that.

I never said he was violating my rights, only that he was in favor of
continuing the violation.

But that's not what you said. I'm sure you can understand that.

The first is an obviously less bigoted way to say it. Don't you agree?

I'm sorry, but this is an open newsgroup. It is implicit that any post
is open to response by any and all readers. I'm sure you knew that
about newsgroups. If you wanted to have a private conversation with
John Manning, you have an option in your newsgroup reader tool to do
that. I'm sure you know how to use that too.

If you wish to make a remark that you don't want the world to look at,
then don't make it on a public newsgroup.

The first was pointing a finger at the person, the second was pointing
a finger at the problem. I chose to point a finger at the problem
rather
than at the person. So sue me for trying to not make it personal like
you are trying to do.

abusing your position as

That's the point. NOT making it personal, and instead casting the
aspersion at a whole class of people is prejudicial and bigotry.

I'm sure you see that.

I guess you didn't read my definition of a Bigot. Just because
somebody refers to a problem that a whole group of people have
does not make it Bigoted. Yer awful quick to defend the inability
of Christians to see beyond their own religion. I gotta ask is it out
of self interest, or interest of the whole? Are you one of those
Christians? Is that why you defend the right for Christians
to have such a narrow view of the world?

>

What I see is you defending the right of Christians to remain
nearsighted. That's what I see..

There you did it again. You assign to ALL Christians the inability to

see beyond their own religion.

This is no different than telling a black man, "You're awful quick to
defend the inability of black folk to get off welfare."

Do you REALLY not see that?

I see you trying to make apples out of oranges.
I didn't say ALL Christians, I said "Christians".
It's ONLY Christians that teach that you can't
get to heaven unless you believe in Jesus Christ.

On the other hand, it's not only blacks on welfare,
so that makes your comparison faulty.

Like I said, the comment wasn't to you to begin
with. John was expressing the VERY stereotyping
that defines Christianity. THAT is what I was referring
to.

Also you are confused. What you are labeling as Bigotry
is not bigotry, it is stereotyping, and stereotyping is not
always a negative thing. Neither does it always represent
bigotry.

I wish to thank you for this dialog, because I am currently
taking an ethics class on this very subject. As such it helps
me to clarify in my own mind, the faulty logic and assumptions
people make because of it.

Ah, and so if I said, ""When oh when will black folks stop being so
lazy and shiftless and get off welfare?" you would understand that I'm
not talking about all black folks, just about some? And therefore it
would not be a prejudicial statement?

> It's ONLY Christians that teach that you can't

Really? What do the Moslems say about infidels?

Are you SURE you don't want to reconsider what you're saying?

Stereotyping DEFINES Christianity?

So what John was expressing is the view of every Christian?

Here we are back again at prejudice and bigotry.

Ah, so when someone else stereotypes, it's bigotry, but if you do it,
then it's stereotyping but not bigotry?

I certainly hope so. One of the best things a good college education
can provide is a little self-awareness.

The fact is, that they are both correct in their criticisms.

They are both corrupt, hypocritical, amoral, greedy, power-hungry,

The Democrats have, for example, taken us to war more often than
the Republicans.

They aren't really enemies at all. That's a sham. They are
the Left and Right wing of the Money party.

Both are puppets of the Corporations.

What we really need in the USA is a second party.
