A recent Valentine's Day Challenge posted here attracted an impressive
8 contributors (not including the moderator, of course) submitting
entries, the largest group involvement I remember seeing on aapc in
the past 3 years. Unfortunately, the moderator's rules, and his
judgement calls surrounding them, resulted in his rejecting at least
75% of the submissions. It's his challenge, and therefore his call;
but IMO as I think the disqualified poems, several of which I
preferred to the qualified, deserve as much of a chance to be read and
voted on, I decided to run my own challenge. Hence this Other
Valentine's Challenge.

The 6 rejected entries are automatically entered in this contest:

Birds on the Lake - Hell Stomper
Valentine Street - Double V
Miss Alice Crenshaw - Will Dockery
Afterglow - George Dance
On a Valentine’s Day - =z=
Sex Cells - Hieronymous House

The authors of the above have until midnight (Eastern Standard Time)
Friday to withdraw that poem. In addition, they and evreyone else, has
the same deadline to submit other poems to the challenget.

The rules are simple: the poem must deal with an aspect of love, and
must include the word "love" somewhere. As well, the poem must be
brought to my attention, either by posting it in this thread, by
linking to it in this thread, by mentioning this thread in its subject
header, by sending me an email, or by some other means.

Qualified poems will be announced the following Saturday, and a voting
thread opened. Voting will close midnight EST Sunday.

Prizes (if any) are yet to be determined.

As you read this, you are challenged.
As you read this, that is proved.
For though I write with meager talent,
As you read this, you've been loved.

If that's a poem, it doesn't qualify (maybe if you'd said "make love
to a pit bull" ...)

If it's a real challenge, open your own thread on it.

Meanwhile, "Birds on the Lake" (the poem) is entered here unless you
want it out; and any other poem(s) you'd like to enter is/are welcome.

It was actually neither. Certainly not a poem, nor an actual
challenge to Hieronymous,
because knowing him, he just might try it.

Count me in, and I'm also spreading word on this (first) contest to a wider range of poets outside this currently limited group we have here, such as at the Topix.com poetry scene:

That's fine if you think in terms spreading word
like spreading manure. Manure makes things
grow. Now think in terms of growing things,
and pollination, and what makes things
attractive. Bees be buzzing things.

Good, but that link was distracting. Who wants to go there anyway? This group is so much better! Besides, I thought we were talking about BEEing attractive here, growing this audience, not some other site's. if you want to spend time there that's fine, but that doesn't really have anything to do with this group unless and until you get them to come here, right? So go get 'em and bring 'em back here! That's an order, dammit! You hear me!?! BEE MORE ATTRACTIVE!!

Valentine's Street -VCV

What a loveless homestead
this would be, if love were celebrated
in only holiday meets
Like Sunday worship we erect abodes
for occasions as if we
with love's passion cold
could control our hearts
for conjunction of stars.
Just give me love in every way
and give me God in every day

The Moon rises thirteen times a year
The stars even gleam behind sunshine dear
And in passing days, hours are struck
Let my heart toll love of my grandest luck

Let my hands guide this greatest joy
Give my ears sight, Give my tongue life
In greater service riding high
for minds flight over mundane lands
to realize mankind stands with women alone
beholding futures and pleasant homes
to civilize planets and pick stars
for hearts alive and minds warm.

Definitely count me in, are we to repost here for voting, or elsewhere?

Miss Alice Crenshaw

Little Victoria
stepped on a bumblebee,
near the sawmill millhouse.

Cousin Maxwell
saw it while sitting in a tree,
on the hill
across from Uncle Grouse.

Near the house of
Bullethead & Shorty...
Always late, never home,
they's a fighting,
they'll get home the best they can.
With some luck and
a Southern wind.

Shorty's chasing Bullethead
with a frying pan
full of chicken bones.

Jerked wire
someone tried to call the cops
on the telephone.

Sort of in the backyard
of the old waterpump house.
Near the canepatch,
Miss Crenshaw's creeping like a mouse.

She said some odd words,
seen them spit right out her mouth.

Everybody's watching television,
or Miss Crenshaw's hipshake.
She's a stroller in technicolor
up and down a dirt avenue
for goodness sake.

If you need a girl
you can converse on love with...
She's a good listener
and she ain't quite loud!
But a looker in a crowd.

On a two stooler bike,
somebody easing down the path.

Near the house of
Bullethead & Shorty...
Working late at the mill again.
Scoop the sugar with cabbage,
wash it down with cold gin.

Never sure when the morning starts
or where it ends.

I recall a bit later,
when she shook her peaches for me.
Shady silver leaf maples,
and a lonesome persimmon tree.

Full moon and hay fever
schoolhouse looking like a Sphinx.
She's a sweetie,
her hair's like a chestnut minx.

Everybody's watching television,
or Miss Crenshaw's hipshake.
She's a stroller
up and down a dirt avenue.

If you need a girl
you can converse on love with...
She's a good listener
and she ain't quite loud!
But a looker in a crowd.

You're right, PJ, translating into plain English is easy. And it has
the advantage that (unless you commit clear and obvious perjury) you
can't even whine to Google that I "infringed" your "copyright" in your

I'll have to do this more often.

Yes, a lot of people were involved in submitting poems; and I enjoyed
reading them; nobody's voting.

Did I adopt too complicated a voting procedure? Is everyone bored with
the subject now that Valentine's Day is over? I dunno?

Mind you, the other contest had only 6 voters, so I wasn't expecting a
lot; but most of those 6 were people with poems in this one, and I was
hoping they'd vote for their own at least.

George, there are at least two votes I know of, mine and another person who I'm not familiar with yet.

I voted for "Passion".

Was there a voting proceedure I missed?

Yes, a lot of people were involved in submitting poems; and I enjoyed
reading them; nobody's voting.

Did I adopt too complicated a voting procedure? Is everyone bored with
the subject now that Valentine's Day is over? I dunno?

Mind you, the other contest had only 6 voters, so I wasn't expecting a
lot; but most of those 6 were people with poems in this one, and I was
hoping they'd vote for their own at least.

I think you're right on all counts. Valentine's Day is so last week's news already, but yours was a valuable exercise. Let's learn from it. I'd appreciate your comments on my proposed list of rules for the proposed Poet of The Month contest. I don't think it'll work at all unless and until we get at least 8 entries which allows for 3 rounds. The more the merrier, of course. Unfortunately, we've got very little expressed interest thus far. H apparently doesn't think it'll work at all, and only you and Will have said you'll compete. I'm trying to stay optimistic here, but am not very encouraged. I guess we'll wait is while and see if anything develops.

Have you voted in George's contest yet, Corey?

If so, along with the two I noted, mine and "Clay", and George's full rating, that's four for a top spot already, at least.

Looks like from that there may be a tie, as all the votes are for different poems?

No. I did read all the entries, but to be honest, didn't even think to vote. I was out with my dad most of yesterday afternoon, and then thinking about the rulz list I posted this morning for my proposed Poet of The Month contest too much to think about voting on his contest.

Rather than overthink it, I just drank some coffee and listed the ones I remembered the most favorably, and put myself last so I look like I have good manners:

Okay, here's my vote. Basically, mine's the same as Will's except that I switched places with him to seem polite.

1) Passion
2) A Valentine Fantasy
3) As you read this
4) Valentine Street
5) Birds On A Lake
6) Alice Crenshaw
7) In Love
8) Sex Cells

And I'm sure not committing to write every month; you know the slow
pace at which I write poetry. I'm just optimistic that this might
break me out of the rut, get me more into writing and posting drafts
(which is what I think I need to do).

I'll check your list of rules at some point today. I'm not going to
tell you how busy I am, but I am -- fortunately, it's all fun on the
Net. In return, I'd appreciate it if you'd cast a vote in the other
thread. If you're under time constraints, too, you don't have to rank
all 9 poems; you can vote for any number from 1 to 9.

Thanks for the tip. I found your ballot on this thread. Other people
might vote here, too, so I'll have to monitor it as well; that's good
for me to learn.

I'll make an official reply on the voting thread, but here's an
unofficial thank-you.
