News in the experimental site http://dl.dropbox.com/u/1555717/DNS-323/Alt-F/experimental/index.html

Alt-F-0.1RC1-snapshot.bin is an *experimental* Alt-F release based on
kernel 2.6.35.13
and was compiled with GPT support.

Together with the Alt-F gptdisk package, and using the 'gdisk' command
line tool,
you can try to use greater then 2TB disks.
Not tested under these circumstances, as I don't have such disks.
Donations are welcome (https://sites.google.com/site/altfirmware/home/
donate)

You should not use Alt-F web-based filesystem maintenance tools on GPT
partitioned disks,
as fdisk is used and unpredictable results might happen.
However, filesystems are recognized and automatically mounted.

The backup configuration file is incompatible with previous versions,
so you will have to reconfigure it.

This experimental release is on its way to 0.1RC1, so please test it
and report back any
issues that you find.

This release is not appropriate for reloading, but you can test it
even if you are
currently using a reloaded or flashed Alt-F.

To experiment it, you must go to System->Firmware, upload the file and
then,
instead of hitting the "FlashIt" button, you should hit the "TryIt"
button.
No flashing is involved, and you don't have to mess with your current
Alt-F installation.

Updated packages in the unstable feed:

forked-daapd_0.17
gptfdisk_0.7.2
avahi_0.6.30
libgcrypt_1.5.0
flibgpg-error_1.10

Mac users who have upgraded to 'Lion' and are using netatalk can't connect to
their shares or use Time Machine on a Alt-F enabled DNS-323.

Apple upgrade path didn't took those users in consideration and now require
DHX2 as the authentication method and other AFP features to use Time Machine.

Alt-F netatalk package has been recompiled with DHX2 support, so users must
upgrade their installation do netatalk-2.1.5-1. Time Machine users has to use
netatalk2-2.2.0, that might have some performance issues with TM.

The netatalk and netatalk2 packages are incompatible, you have to decide which
one your need/want, and when uninstalling one to install the other the configuration files
will be lost.

Please refer to Alt-F Topic "Next release" starting from post 5,

Enjoy and please report any problems that you find

Alt-F-0.1RC1-snapshot2.bin is an *experimental* Alt-F release based on kernel
2.6.35.14 and was compiled with GPT support.

-No packages are needed to use and partition greater than 2.2TB disks, as
the Alt-F Disk Wizard and Disk Partitioner can deal with them; it is also
possible to convert a MBR-based disk to the GPT format and vice-versa.

-Samba-3.5.9 is now used, in /etc/samba/smb.conf the following line must be
added in the Global Section:

   passdb backend = smbpasswd

-Debian can now be installed and run from RAID

-Several bug fixes

-The packages found in the experimental package feed can only be used
with this snapshot release.

-This release is not appropriate for reloading, but you can test it even

if you are currently using a reloaded or flashed Alt-F.
To experiment it, you must go to System->Firmware, upload the file and then,
instead of hitting the "FlashIt" button, you should hit the "TryIt" button.
No flashing is involved, and you don't have to mess with your current Alt-F
installation.

In the experimental package feed,

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/1555717/DNS-323/Alt-F/pkgs/experimental/index.html

You can find several packages that are only intended to be used with the above Alt-F snapshot release.

-iscsitarget_1.4.20.2 -iSCSI Enterprise Target is for building an iSCSI storage system on Linux. (no web-base configuration as yet)

-nuts_2.6.1 -Network UPS Tools is a collection of programs for monitoring and administering UPS, PDU and SCD hardware.(untested)

-parted_2.2

-kernel-modules_0.1 - kernel modules for the iscsitarget and nuts packages

If you want to experiment it you must add
   http://dl.dropbox.com/u/1555717/DNS-323/Alt-F/pkgs/experimental
as the second package feed, together with the unstable feed.

Enjoy and please report back any issues.

git_1.7.7_arm.ipk
pcre_7.7-2_arm.ipk
sqlite_3.6.23.1_arm.ipk
bash_4.2_arm.ipk
gdb_6.8_arm.ipk

Notes:

-Automatic now requires url/cookies and pattern/folder on separated lines of the configuration file.
It should convert the existing configuration file to the new format.

-Only Git main commands was tested.
Git has some Perl based scripts, mainly (I believe) for cvs/svn handling. As Alt-F doesn't has Perl, you should install ffp Perl package, if you need. Not tested under these conditions.
Git also has some shell based scripts, I don't know if busybox 'ash' (the default shell) has the needed requirements.
Feedback is welcome.

pcre: the 'fuppes' package is not working with the last version (8.13) of the 'pcre' package. I bug report was sent.
If you need fuppes, you should remove pcre-8.13 and install pcre_7.7-2. It can't be done using the webgui, you have to resort to the command line:

   cd /tmp
   ipkg -force-depends remove pcre
   ipkg -force-downgrade install pcre_7.7-2_arm.ipk
   rm  pcre_7.7-2_arm.ipk

Aftwards you should not update pcre using the web-gui.

New packages in the unstable feed:

lighttpd_1.4.30
php_5.4.0
owncloud_3.0.2

Lighttpd is a light webserver that supports SSL and WebDAV, among other features.
Alt-F has and administrative web page to configure it.

As the Alt-F administrative web server is running on the default port 80, you should configure lighttpd to use other port,
such as 8080, and use "http://<box ip>:8080" to access it.

If you are using the "stunnel" package to provide https for the administrative Alt-F webserver, then the default 443 port for SSL
is already used and you must configure lighttpd to use other port, such as 8443, and use "https://<box ip>:8443" to acess it.

These are the default configuration.

Of course, users web pages can be served from their "public_html" home directory.

lighttpd can't be used to server the Alt-F administrative web pages, as these require root access and lighttpd is not running as the root user.

The WebDAV support was tested with an iMac, iPad and several linux clients. Spent a couple of minutes with Win Vista without success,
please try it and report back how to use.
It uses the http digest method to validate users, and existing Alt-F users are automatically allowed to access it.
There is a single write area, that can you can configure to be used by a single user, shared by all Alt-F users, or used by anyone.
You can access lighttpd WebDAV using "http://<box-ip>:8080/webdav" or "https://<box-ip>:8443/webdav"
(or using "webdav://" or "dav://" for some clients).

PHP can be used with lighttpd, but activate it only if needed, and then only activate the needed modules, as they consume a lot of memory.
PHP was build mainly for use with owncloud.

Upon owncloud installation PHP will be enabled and the necessary modules activated.
You have to configure lighttpd before installing owncloud. After installation you can acess owncloud using
"http://<box-ip>:8080/owncloud" or "https://<box-ip>:8443/owncloud"

owncloud has a fancy interface, go to its web site for a demo. It has Calendar, Contacts, Music, Photo Galery... and of course can store
your files in a "cloud" way. You have to create users, they are independent of Alt-F users.
owncloud has its own WebDAV server, access it using "webdav://<box-ip>:8080/owncloud/files/webdav.php" or also using the SSL port; you might have to use "http://" or "https://" on some clients.
The main advantage of owncloud versus lighttpd webdav server is that several independent users are supported, each one with its own private area.
Creating thumbnails in the Photo Gallery is excruciating slow!.

To have the "cloud" accessible from the outside, you have to expose your box to the internet, usually putting it in the "demilitarized" zone of your network, using your router. It can also be done using openVPN. Either way, be careful.

Enjoy and report back your experiences and findings, I'm also a newcomer to this :-)

"Couch Potato" proudly presents, in the unstable feed:

sickbeard_2012-05-08
sabnzbd_0.6.15
python_2.7.2-1
cheetah_2.4.4
pyopenssl_0.11
yenc_0.3
par2cmdline_0.4

For those who don't know, (and I was one of them) given a TV series or
show name, Sick-Beard searches the net for a file describing where in the
Usenet newsgroups it can be found, and then send that descriptive file
to SABnzbd that starts downloading the series or show (you need an
account on a news server with binary groups); after the download finish,
SABnzbd sends the downloaded file back to Sick-Beard.

SABnzbd can download any kind of binary file, not only TV series.

The downloaded files can be found aside of the 'Public' folder, e.g. as
/mnt/sda2/Sick-Beard and /mnt/sda2/SABnzbd.

A 'TV' group is created, and for users to access these folder they must
belong to that group.

Both programs have their own web pages, which are embedded in the Alt-F
page under Services->User, as usual. They can be however opened
independently using http://<box ip>:8081 and http://<box ip>:8082.
Both programs supports https.

For those who need it, the programs executables can be found at /opt, the
programs data at /var/lib, and the programs configuration are
/etc/sickbeard.conf and /etc/sabnzbd/sabnzbd.conf.

Don't start the programs using the command line, as folders as carefully
setup for an easy upgrade. If you need, use instead 'rcsabnzbd start' or
'rcsickbeard start' (or stop, or status, or restart).

The programs are barely usable,as they need many non-existent memory;
as such, disk swapping is going to happen and will be up to 70MB.
However, after the initial setup phase they will work properly.

The initial start of each programs is going to take a couple a minutes,
be patient.

Don't set a user/password in the SABnzbd wizard or in SABnzbd/Sick-Beard
configuration. After initial testing you can add them, but you will have
to hand edit the file /var/lib/sabnzbd/scripts/autoProcessTV.cfg

Everything should work without the need to do any configuration
changes, you only have to provide your news-server details in SABnzbd wizard and
add a show in Sick-Beard.

Please report any issue and Enjoy,
Joao

New package in the unstable feed:

couchpotato_2012-05-15_arm.ipk

CouchPotato uses Usenet and NZB providers to find movies, and in collaboration with SABnzdb downloads them and makes them available at the CouchPotato folder.
You need to have an account on a binary Usenet news-server and a NZB provider.

Read the previous post first for more details. In short,
A 'TV' group is created, and for users to access these folder they must belong to that group.
The program has its own web page, which can be reached at http://<nas-ip>:8083, or embedded under Alt-F page at System->User->coachpotato->Configure.
Being python-driven, it is slow, but usable.

The next in the series will be NZBget, an alternative to SABnzdb that should be lighter.

If you don't have SABnzdb installed install it first.

New package in the unstable feed:

nzbget 0.8.0
nzbgetweb 1.5
libsigcpp 2.2.10
libpar2 0.2

nzbget is a binary Usenet news grabber, with a smaller memory footprint and faster than SABnzdb, although it is command-line only.

nzbgetweb provides a web interface for its configuration, but requires php and the lighttpd web server.
Installing nzbgetweb only will deploy the full install, and after the nzbget configuration step using nzbgetweb you can stop the lighttpd web server, conserving memory.
For configuration you only have to specify your news-server details, as other settings are already setup.

For usage with SickBeard and CouchPotato you should specify the NZBget method, and the downloaded files will be found in <znb-dir>/Complete
A samba share is created, and nzb files can be droped in the <znb-dir>/nzb folder.

NZBget belongs to group 'TV' (now a misnomer, future package updates will rename this to News or Usenet), as does SickBeard, CouchPotato, SABnzbd and all users who desire to use them.

There is a bug in the NZBget package, as Alt-F NZBget web page assumes that nzbgetweb is installed.

To overcome this, please install nzbgetweb also.

vsftpd - 2.3.5-1 - vsftpd is an ftp daemon written with security in mind.
svn - 1.7.7 - Enterprise-class centralized version control for the masses
apr - 1.4.6 - The Apache Portable Runtime (APR) project
apr-util - 1.5.1 - The utility library for the apache runtime project

The vsftpd package is the first that overrides a package existing in the base firmware. Others will follow, as time permits.
If this or any package of this kind is afterward removed, the pre-existing package in the base firmware will resurrect.
In this case, if new configuration options where added and the previous package binaries does not recognize them,
a manual edit of the configuration files will be needed.

This vsftpd package has a patch applied that allows the user home login folder to be writable when "choot" (Restrict Folders option in the webUI) is enabled.
However, the anonymous ftp user login folder must still be non-writable. The default folder for the anonymous user is /mnt/<fs>/Public, and if you want the ftp user to be able to login, you must change its permissions to be non-writable. You can use Setup->Folders/Directory->Permissions to made that change.

The svn package was lightly tested and seems to work fine. If someone could be kind enough to write an initscript and webUI page for it I would appreciate.
The apr and apr-util packages are support packages for svn.

Updated packages in the unstable feed:

avahi - 0.6.31 - Avahi is a system which facilitates service discovery on a local network.

New packages

    mpd - 0.17.2 - A flexible, powerful, server-side application for playing music
twolame - 0.3.13 - An optimized MPEG Audio Layer 2 encoder

mpd can play music either locally, or stream it to the network, where any http stream aware music application can play it.

Currently it is not possible to hear music in the box, because the kernel has no audio support
and no USB kernel audio modules exists in the kernel-modules package.
That might change, depending on how big the kernel will be after adding USB audio support.

so, mpd is currently configured to stream music to the network using http.

There are several possibilities to stream music, using wave, flac, twolame, and lame.
-wave is the default as it is the one that less loads the CPU (40%), but it uses a lot of network bandwidth (280KBPS)
-flac use up to 60% of the CPU power and reduces the network bandwidth to 170KBPS.
twolame (MP2) and lame (MP3) are simply unusable, as the box has not enough CPU power to encode them online.

This does not means that you can't play your MP3 musics, you can,
because mpd uses the 'mad' library to decode MP3 online to raw PCM, and that is pretty fast.

I have not tried to play files other than MP3, please report back your findings.

mpd has not (yet) a webUI administrative page, so you have to edit its configuration file, /etc/mpd.conf,
and specify your music folder changing the 'music_directory'.  You don't need to change anything else.

To hear the stream just use the URL "http://<your_box_ip_or_name>:8000" on your preferred player.
For Mac users, the service is announced through avahi.

mpd can be controlled by using several mpd clients.
They are not music players, they just remotely control the server from your computer or phone, see http://mpd.wikia.com/wiki/Clients.

samba-extra - 3.5.19 - Extra Samba binaries
samba-modules - 3.5.19 - Samba VFS modules

If the packages are uninstalled, the version shipped with the base firmware will reappear.
vsftpd was the first package of this kind to be released, and as no issues has been reported I assume that everything is OK with this approach.

As these kind of packages runs from disk, they can have implications on disk spindown while they run.

Ethtool  will be removed from the base firmware distribution, for freeing flash memory space.

-davfs2 allows you to mount remote WebDAV servers on the box; most cloud services out there supports it.
It has no configuration web page and was subjected to a very lite testing.
There seems to exists problems to mount remote servers as a common user.
For a description, read this

-alsa-lib and alsa-utils are related to sound and have been updated to their last version.
You can attach a (supported) USB sound card to the box and use it.
No configuration web page is available.
In an ideal world, the needed kernel modules would be loaded as soon as the USB card is plugged, but I'm afraid that this will not happens.
It was tested with a dummy fake board, and all that was needed to make it start was executing the 'modprobe snd_dummy' command.
All needed modules was loaded afterwards and 'aplay' and 'alsamixer' could be used.
It your specific USB card does not loads the right modules, you have to do that yourself.
An initscript has yet to be written to do the the initialization automaticaly.
Thanks to samuel wang for his work.

-The kernel-modules package have been updated to contain the needed sound drivers.

-dialog displays dialog boxes from shell scripts and very likely be of no use to most.

Updated packages in the unstable feed:

  netatalk_3.0.2_arm.ipk
  transmission_2.76_arm.ipk

-netatalk_3.0.2 is incompatible with netatalk2 and has no administrative web page.
The configuration is completely different from previous releases and you have to use the command line to set it up,
but it is very simple to setup and the sample configuration file supports the users Home, Public and Backup shares,
and even a TM share (if you have Backups already setup).
I recommend to users that have already upgraded to 3.0.1 to save their current configuration file, uninstall 3.0.1 and install 3.0.2.

The "stable" package feed is causing problems, and as it contains no packages anyway it can be safely removed from the feed list.

Remove

http://sourceforge.net/projects/alt-f/files/pkgs/stable

from the feeds list in the Alt-F Package Manager web page.
Just clear (remove all text from)  the entry field and hit the ChangeFeed buttom.

Thanks to anadigi for reporting this.

Updated packages in the unstable feed:

  netatalk_3.0.2-1_arm.ipk

This release includes a simple administrative web page.
I recommend you to save your current /etc/afp.conf file, as the webUI will not honor all possible options.
If you think that there are options that are widely used and that the webUI should have, please request it.

User who are still using netatatalk2 are urged to uninstall it and upgrade to 3.0

As one of the netatalk_3.0.2  unistall package scripts is in error, you should stop netatalk manually before updating.
You might get a "rcafpd not found" or similar error message during the update, but the update should not fail.

-Updated packages in the unstable feed:

davfs2 - 1.4.7-1 - davfs2 will work with most WebDAV servers needing little or no configuration

This new release allows ordinary users to mount remote webdav servers locally (as long as "root" allows it by creating a fstab line)
Unfortunately ordinary users are not allowed to use the 'umount' command, so the 'sudo' package has to be installed and an entry added for them.

-The (empty) "stable" feed is back again, just hit the "DefaultFeed" button to re-enable it again.

-Updated packages in the unstable feed:

 kernel-modules - 2.6.35.14-5

This release has kernel modules needed for quotas.

-New packages in the unstable feed:

quota-tools - 4.01 - Tools and patches for the Linux Diskquota system

This package was only mildly tested and has no web UI, you have to resort to the command line and follow a tutorial to use it.

To use it, filesystems has to be mounted with special options, use Disk->Filesystem, fill in "Mount Options",
then under "FS Operation", select "Set mnt Options", to make the changes permanent as directly editing /etc/fstab will not work across reboots.
I experimented with both "defaults, usrquota, grpquota" for the traditional quota, and
  "defaults,usrjquota=aquota.user,grpjquota=aquota.group,jqfmt=vfsv0" for journaled quota.
  No initscript is yet available

Please report any issue and
Enjoy

 kernel-modules - 2.6.35.14-6

This update adds support for the xfs, btrfs, udf, jfs, jffs2 and logfs filesystems.

XFS is a high performance journaling filesystem which originated on the SGI IRIX platform.
JFS is a port of IBM's Journaled Filesystem.
Btrfs is a new filesystem with extents, writable snapshotting... but yet very experimental at the time the 2.6.35.14 kernel was released.
UDF is the new file system used on some CD-ROMs and DVDs.
jffs2 and logfs are for flash-memory filesystems and are intended to be used only by experts.

You have to use the command line to mount such filesystems, as automounting or the Filesystem webUI will not work.
Only xfs was lightly tested.

There are no capabilities to manipulate, i.e., check, fix and create such filesystems, only to mount and use them.
There are no plans to add such capabilities in the near future.

Enjoy

New packages in the unstable feed:

acl - 2.2.52 - contains utilities to administer Access Control Lists, ACL.
attr - 2.4.47 - utilities to administer the extended attributes on filesystem objects
samba - 3.5.21-1 - This is an updated on-disk version of Samba shipped on the firmware.

This samba release has ACL support, and when installed will override the one distributed with RC3; after uninstalling the package, the RC3 released samba will reappear.

You need to activate ACL and extended attributes on the filesystem you intend to use windows ACL on, setting the Filesystem Mount Options to 'defaults,user_xattr,acl' and activating "Set Mount Opt" under "FS Operations" in the Filesystem Maintenance webUI.

Then you need to manually edit '/etc/samba/smb.conf' and add in the share you intend to use ACLs on, 'nt acl support = yes'.
If you latter use the Samba Setup page the change will be deleted.

Following the tutorial on http://aisalen.wordpress.com/2007/08/10/acls-on-samba/ (I'm not a MS person!) I was able to set/modify ACLs under MS-W Vista.

Updated packages in the unstable feed:

samba - 3.5.21-2 - This is an updated on-disk version of Samba shipped on the firmware.
  samba-modules - 3.5.21-1 - Samba VFS modules

A samba build bug avoided the usage of loadable modules; this update fixes that.

As as example, a "recycle bin" can be used for each folder:

[sda4]
    comment = sda4 folder
    path = /mnt/sda4
    public = yes
    available = yes
    read only = no
    vfs object = recycle
    recycle:repository = .recycle
    recycle:keeptree = yes
    recycle:versions = yes

Every file deleted from the 'sda4' share will be moved to the '.recycle' folder instead of being deleted.
The '/mnt/sda4/.recycle' folder (you can use another name) must be created in advance and must have permissions for everyone to use (not sure about this)
As the Samba Setup webUI does not support those options, and will erase them if they exists and the page Submit button is hitted, you have to hand-edit /etc/samba/smb.conf
Of course samba must be restarted/reloaded after its configuration files changes.

As an aside note, I found that setting in /etc/samba/smb.conf

    socket options = IPTOS_LOWDELAY TCP_NODELAY SO_SNDBUF=87380 SO_RCVBUF=87380

increased my write speed a lot, from the default ~13MBps:

jcard@silver:~/Alt-F/alt-f> smbclient -N //nas/sda4 -c "cd foo; put Immortel.avi"Anonymous login successful
Domain=[HOMENET] OS=[Unix] Server=[Samba 3.5.21]
putting file Immortel.avi as \foo\Immortel.avi (12934.1 kb/s) (average 12934.1 kb/s)

 to ~18MBps:

jcard@silver:~/Alt-F/alt-f> smbclient -N //nas/sda4 -c "cd foo; put Immortel.avi"
Anonymous login successful
Domain=[HOMENET] OS=[Unix] Server=[Samba 3.5.21]
putting file Immortel.avi as \foo\Immortel.avi (17814.1 kb/s) (average 17814.1 kb/s)

Read speed was not altered, as SO_RCVBUF was not changed from the default.
A "log level = 5" in the Global section shows you in /var/log/samba/log.smbd the values used by default if none is specified in the configuration file:
   'grep BUF /var/log/samba/log.smbd'  gives SO_SNDBUF = 22056 and SO_RCVBUF = 87380

From:

jcard@silver:~/Alt-F/alt-f> smbclient -N //nas/sda4 -c "cd foo; get Immortel.avi"
Anonymous login successful
Domain=[HOMENET] OS=[Unix] Server=[Samba 3.5.21]
getting file \foo\Immortel.avi of size 733151232 as Immortel.avi (18373.7 KiloBytes/sec) (average 18373.7 KiloBytes/sec)
 to:
jcard@silver:~/Alt-F/alt-f> smbclient -N //nas/sda4 -c "cd foo; get Immortel.avi"
Anonymous login successful
Domain=[HOMENET] OS=[Unix] Server=[Samba 3.5.21]
getting file \foo\Immortel.avi of size 733151232 as Immortel.avi (18383.1 KiloBytes/sec) (average 18383.1 KiloBytes/sec)

Please notice that the value strongly depends on your network setup and clients, and might even degrade performance, as you will find if you do a search.
That's the reason why I will not change that in the shipped configuration file.
The Global section in the configuration file is preserved by the Samba Setup web page.
