Boston Police Release Milestone Marker "The Rock" from Protective Custody.

The Boston Police Department, District 14 Community Service Office, announced today that they have freed "The Rock" from protective custody after 18 months. "The Rock" (AKA Milestone Marker #6) located in front of #150 Harvard Avenue, Allston,  was placed in protective custody after being seriously damaged in 2 motor vehicle collisions in 2011. With the assistance of many historic groups, concerned citizens, business groups, State Rep. Kevin Honan, Councilor Ciommo's Office, and MASSDOT's Historic preservationists the Milestone was cleaned, restored and setback from the curb while two historic bollards were added for protection against further damage. Thank You all for your assistance in protecting our history.

Thanks to everyone who was involved in not only fixing the mile marker on Harvard Ave. but making sure that it stayed where it has been for more than two and a half centuries.  A great holiday gift to the Allston community and beyond.  Again, a job well done to all involved, Bob Pessek, Allston

When you think that William Dawes, disguised as a tipsy farmer in an old slouch hat, rode on horseback past that milestone on the 18th of April, 1775, on his way to Lexington to warn that the Brittish were coming and in all likelihood noted it to see how far he had come, and how far he had to go, you get the idea of what historical significance that Rock has.
