When I launch Microsoft Word 2000 using Windows XP, I receive the following error message: "The Create Adobe PDF Monitor cannot be found." Can someone tell me what the PDF Monitor is and where I can find it? Please e-mail me at: ken.w...@verizon.net.

Thanks,

Do or did you at some point have Acrobat installed?

Yes, I had both Adobe Acrobat 4.0 installed & Adobe Reader 5.0 installed. Now I have Adobe Acrobat 5.0.5 installed.

Also, I made a mistake. I'm using Microsoft Word 2002--not 2000.

Did you uninstall either Acrobat 4.0 or Reader 5.0 *after* you installed Acrobat 5.0.5? If so, you should uninstall *all* your Acrobat products, and then reinstall just the one(s) you want.

You didn't really answer my question, which was *after* you installed Acrobat 5 and/or the Acrobat 5.0.5 update, did you uninstall Acrobat 4?

Yes I did uninstall all my Acrobat products before I installed Windows XP. Then I reinstalled Adobe Acrobat 4.0. Then I upgraded to Adobe Acrobat 5.0 and then I upgraded to Adobe Acrobat 5.0.5. I don't use Acrobat Reader and don't have it installed on my computer because I can read PDF with Adobe Acrobat 5.0.5.

Thanks for trying Mike.

Well, then now you should uninstall Acrobat 5.0.5, and then reinstall Acrobat 5, followed by re-installing the Acrobat 5.0.5 update.

By uninstalling Acrobat 4 *after* installing Acrobat 5 you most likely removed DLLs and other elements common to both Acrobat 4 and Acrobat 5, and required for proper operation of Acrobat 5. I am guessing that "Create Adobe PDF Monitor" is one of these common elements that was removed.

Here is the solution to this problem.

A: First, open Word, and, from its Tools menu, choose Templates and Add-ins.

B: Look in the "Checked items are currently running" box.

C: PDFWriter, a program that lets you create documents in the popular .pdf format, is probably listed there. Highlight it, then click on the Remove button.

D: I would go further, however, and remove any PDFWriter-related files from your Word Startup folder. You can learn where that folder is by going back to Tools and clicking on Options. Click on File Locations and skim the File Types box.

E: Once you have determined where the Startup folder is, open Windows Explorer, browse to the folder, and get rid of PDFWriter files."

F: Remove the PDFWriter97.dot and PDFWriter.xla files from the Microsoft Office/Office/Startup folder."

G: See the following link:

Mike,

It's easier for me to read. I'm 65 years old.

Guy, when I was installing Acrobat 5.0, I was presented with a screen that asked if I wanted to uninstall 4.0. I said OK, but then like Ken found that 5.0 no longer worked. In my case I can't find the error message can be "Acrobat distiller not defined" or "cannot locate Acrobat Distiller driver". I have uninstalled and reintalled v4 and v5 four or five times, but can't even get v4 running properly now. Any suggestions? Thanks.

There are some suggestions in the FAQ at the top of this forum for completely uninstalling Acrobat and reinstalling. Have you tried looking through those? (I think the best info is in a thread about "manually uninstalling.")

Suzanne, I did a manual uninstall but it didn't solve the problem. Now on reinstalling v4, I still don't have either the PDFMaker or Distiller printers installed. I don't know how to install these manually or if that can be done?

I'm using Microsoft Office 97, when I try to access a word.doc I get the message "Create Adobe PDF Monitor can not be found". Currently when I try to access Microsoft Word. WINWORD.EXE is eliminated and I can not use Microsoft Word. Another Microsoft product such as binder comes up. The Icon and pointer changes as well. Roger T.

"I'm using Microsoft Office 97, when I try to access a word.doc I get the message 'Create Adobe PDF Monitor can not be found'."

What exactly do you mean by "access"?

"Currently when I try to access Microsoft Word. WINWORD.EXE is eliminated and I can not use Microsoft Word."

What exactly do you mean by "access", "WINWORD.EXE is eliminated", and "I can not use Microsoft Word".

"The Icon and pointer changes as well."

What icon and pointer are you talking about, what has it changed from, and what has it changed to?

It is likely that this is a simple problem with an easy solution, but you need to tell us *exactly* what you are trying to do, and *exactly* what happens when you do it.

Roger Thompson - 02:38am Jan 28, 2003 Pacific (#15 of 16)

I'm using Microsoft Office 97,on Windows XP, when I try to access a word.doc I get the message "Create Adobe PDF Monitor cannot be found". Currently when I try to access Microsoft Word. WINWORD.EXE is eliminated and I can not use Microsoft Word. Another Microsoft product such as binder comes up. The Icon and pointer changes as well. I since eliminated the binder now When I right click on Microsoft Word the program comes up briefly then closes. When I click on the Program again its icon changes to Excell. When I right click for "properties" the program changes to EXCEL.EXE, WINWORD.EXE is eliminated. (The EXCEL program comes up.) When I click on the Microsoft Word program the Word icon is automatically changed to something that looks more like an EXCEL icon. (previously when BINDER was installed the icon changed to a binder icon and properties led to the BINDER.EXE [I'm not sure of the exact binder.exe file name]) Thank you, Roger Thompson

Delete the file "ShellIconCache" in your "Windows" folder. This may be a hidden file, so you need to set your folder options to show hidden files in order to see it.

Thanks, but so far I haven't found "ShellIconCache". I found a number of files containing "shell". Roger Thompson

Search for "shell*.*. I found "ShellIconCache" in C:\Windows. As Mike said earlier, this is a hidden file.

I also found some files containing the word "Cache",even "IconCache"(I'm guessing these are more or less temporary since they have recent dates), but no complete matches with "Shell" Thanks, Roger Thompson

I mistakenly assumed that the file would be called the same thing in Windows XP as it is in all other Windows versions. In Windows XP, delete the file IconCache.db found at: C:\DOCUMENTS AND SETTINGS\ USERNAME\LOCAL SETTINGS\APPLICATION DATA\IconCache.db (where USERNAME is your account name).

Well I didn't shut down yet but the same thing happened when I tried to launch Microsoft Word. I always have to reinstall Microsoft Office 97 when that happens. The WORDWIN.EXE program actually gets deleted.

I found the file and have deleted it, I hope my account will be still usable. I'll shut down and restart my computer. Thanks, Roger Thompson

After shutting down I get the same result. It still looks for "Create Adobe PDF Monitor..." By the way I have never had "Create Adobe PDF" only "Acrobat Reader" a free download. I uninstalled that and have since redownloaded it, with the same results. Is "Create Adobe PDF Monitor..." part of "Create Adobe PDF"? Thanks, Roger Thompson

Yes Microsoft Word in Microsoft office 97 was working fine on my new Windows XP then it ceased to work by having itself eliminated when the program was launched. The Microsoft Word window appears with another window on top with the message "Create Adobe PDF Monitor cannot be found" then disappears and the program (WINDWORD.EXE) is deleted from the program files. "Yes Microsoft Word in Microsoft office 97 was working fine on my new Windows XP"

That doesn't answer my question.
