Hoboken Bike Auction / Bike Parts

Hoboken's doing it's annual bike auction in case anyone is looking for a new bike or bike parts for a project. Some of the more messed up ones (need new chains, tires, etc) are going for like $5 (so far).

It's too bad they don't provide more of a description. I'd buy the cheap ones if they had aluminum frames just to have the aluminum for casting.

How much Aluminum do you need and which grade? I might be able to scrounge up some scrap, I doubt it, but if for some reason I've gotta make a specimen out of a cast part I can give you what's left of it. Might be a while till I see any but if I know to look for it I'll set it aside.

I'm just starting out. Anything other than aluminum cans would be fine. I have a lot of things in-work and casting is not quite on the radar yet. My wife gets annoyed when I have too many things going on (we're short on space).

I've been doing a lot of reading on casting. The cans would work if they had no paint and no plastic coating on the inside. I saw one article where a person cut them into tops, bottoms, and split sides, but that's way too much work to get some good working material. I'm planning to ask the guys at the local recycling place if I can scavenge some junk out of old PCs and printers. If they let me, there's probably some nice aluminum to be had, along with stepper motors and machined rods and such.
