The projected opening is December 01.  We will keep a close eye on the weather forecast.

If you are a never-ever and want to learn skiing/snowboarding, or if you are a beginner and want to refresh your skill, I would strongly recommend you taking advantage of Whitetail's Learn-to-Ski/Snowboard package.  That package will be offered in early season, and it includes everything - equipment rental, lesson, and lift ticket.  I don't know how much the package is for this coming season, but it used to be only $39.

Another important thing is that January is the Learn to Ski & Snowboard Month.  Whitetail also offers that $39 Learn-to-Ski/Snowboard package every Wednesday in January.  If you are a beginner, mark your calendar!  Please see:

Any recommendations for places to stay for a few days (during Christmas) in Whitetail? Is whitetail the best place to ski for a few days within a few hours of driving? If not, where would be the best place?

- To answer your first question:
Whitetail has some lodging partners near the resort:
There is an outlet in Hagerstown:

- To answer your second question:
Whitetail is good for day tour (only 1.5-hour drive).  For few days skiing, I would recommend Seven Springs or Snowshoe.  You might be interested in this post (from somebody I don't know):

I checked out the mitbbs. I guess I was not clear. I have friends to share the lodging but we are trying to figure out what is the best place to stay. What I get from the post is that somewhere in the village. It is close to the restaurants as well as the slope.

Whitetail is opening this Friday.  I'll go there on both Saturday and Sunday.  Let me know if you are going and need a carpool.

Another important news is that they offer Learn to Ski/Snowboard Package for only $39 every Wednesday in January.

Isabel,

You missed our last Vail/Beaver Creek trip. There is one spot open in our Lake Tahoe trip in coming Jan 19-25. I have 5 people going to Lake Tahoe and we just need one more to make it a team of six!

Each person will have their own bed and only 2 people sharing a studio condo with a kitchen in a 5 star vacation resort hotel.

There is a race tomorrow at Whitetail. My son wants to try. We will be there around 8:30.
We have 3 more friends meet there.

Peter,
Do you know anyone else going? Is it possible to get enough people for group rate?
How can we find you?

Thanks,

Jihong

I was thinking that we could get more negotiation power with the resort if our club had more members.  Skiers/snowboarders in this area go to either Liberty or Whitetail.  They are under the same mother company, but actually they are still competing.  Say, if we had a big group of members, I could talk to my boss to see if they are willing to offer a discount rate specific to the members of CSC.  Since right now we are still growing, we do need more people join our ski/snowboard club.

If CSC could organize a kid learn to ski/ski school in coordination with Whitetail and one or more of the local Chinese schools I bet quite a few parents would join CSC to go as well.

I'd like to get my son and daughter skiing but the costs and driving time is a big hill to climb.

Being able to drop them off for a bus trip to whitetail is a lot more practical. Parents could rotate as volunteer parent chaperones to help keep some order.

I am back from Whitetail just now.  It was a good ski day today.  The snow was not dry (a bit wet), but it was in consistent condition - so there was no drag-and-pull spring-like condition at all.  You got to go skiing tomorrow if you did not go today because Spring is coming soon, and the clock is ticking and counting down.  If you go go tomorrow, DO NOT wear too much because the high will be 50 F.  (It's actually quite comfortable to wear short sleeve and ski.)  I will be at Whitetail tomorrow, if you need any help on your skiing, let me know!

I got on the first chair on 8:30am and were riding down first track on 8:42am.

The powder snow was so sick and my GoPro felt off and shoot 10 feet away from my helmet. If it was not a fresh powder I won't be able to find it. The super glue on GoPro was not strong with my crash on the double blacks.

Last Saturday (02/23/2013), weather report said a day before that it would be a icy rainy day.  I woke up in the morning and checked the weather report again and found it was a cloudy day, so, of course, I rushed to Whitetail.  The whole resort was quite (so strange on a weekend Saturday), for probably most people did not go because they thought that it would be a icy rainy day.  Anyway, long story short ... it was so quiet, especially the backside (Exhibition Run etc.), and I took a nap on the lift couple times.

With night time humidity forecasted to be 55%, we actually need temperature to drop to 24 in order to make good quality snow (http://www.snowathome.com/snowmaking_weather_tools.php).

But, no worries, weather channel forecast says low of 23 on Sunday and 24 on Monday.

Larry - If you are in this area long enough, you would know that ski resorts here take any possible opportunity to make snow even if it is as high as 31 F.

Good news!  I got the latest news just now from Whitetail that there will be snowmaking tonight!  AND ... the weather report says that Saturday and Sunday will be snow days!  We will get a great condition this weekend!  Come and join me to go skiing together.  Spring is coming very soon, and you won't get anything better in the end of this season!  Also if anyone is thinking about improving your skill or fix some skiing problem, let me know and I can definitely help.

Snowrider - no, I am not in the area long enough, only since 2010.

But I do understand that snow can be made at temperature as high as 39 degrees (if humidity is less than 10%).

However, there is a difference between "good quality snow" and "poor quality snow".....distinguished by purple and blue color in the above chart.

But you are right in the sense that even "poor quality snow" is better than no snow. Since moving east from Utah I have learned, painfully at times, to appreciate that poor quality snow is better than no snow.

Along this line, I have experienced Vermont in its not-so-great days, during which I had to, on a given trail, stop, take off the skis, carry them on my shoulder, walk over patches of grass, and then put the skis on to continue my journey (I believe the word journey is suitable here ....)

BUT, not-so-great is all relative.

(1) On one hand, those no-so-great days are so much greater than the days that we have no snow. We are much like the fish appreciating a puddle of water when there is no pond, lake or ocean around.

In this regard, people have learned to appreciate not only any bit of snow we can get, but also anything non-water, including sand, grass, and plastic. I have seen on TV that people do ski them, the sand, the grass, the plastic trail....

(2) One the other hand, any day with less than six inch of fresh natural snow are horrible. In Utah the locals (including my Utah friend who is the subject of the two powder-skiing pictures sent earlier) refuse to ski without the slopes receiving more than six inch of fresh natural snow. At certain other places, people would die for a couple of inch of it...

Anyway, I digress....

Have a great remainder of the season!

- Larry

I want to add that eastern snow does have one advantage over western snow, I believe. And that is ski racing.

I have not seen statistics comparing Olympian ski racers who grew up in the east versus those who grew up in the west. But two of the best current racers and arguably two of the most successful US racers (Bode Miller and Lindsey Vonn) both grew up in the east (one in New Hampshire, one in Minnesota).

If you recall the Salt Lake City Winter Olympics, at times the workers had to use giant syringe to inject water into the race courses because the courses (after receiving too much new snow) were too soft to race on. With skiers rushing down on them at speed up to 90 MPH, those courses better be firm enough to hold the skiers.

The advantage mentioned above is one of the reasons that I am considering picking up a little bit of ski racing, somehow, if I can squeeze some time for it.

Once again, enjoy the rest of the season before the dark days of summer are bestowed upon us -:)

Hah!  That's why!  You are too indulged by Utah's fresh powder to accept the fact that we are in the East where some resorts cannot even open on Christmas in some bad years.  That is the fact that skiing in the East needs to deal with rainy, icy, warm, and cold conditions.  We appreciate every possible ski days here because the season is so short, 3 months especially in our Mid-Atlantic, where the first month early condition and last month Spring condition.  When we call our good condition here, westerners will say that "so icy"!  When we call our great condition here, westerners will say that "not much snow"!  What should we do?  We have no choice (except taking ski trips to the West), but we still go skiing every weekend to enjoy "icy" condition the same way as people enjoy grass skiing in some no-snow countries.

Normally, the season in our area ends the 3rd weekend of March.  That's why I strongly recommend people to go now (it's rare that the end of Feb. resorts still fully open and have lot of *snow* - machine made).

"icy" snow is good, for two reasons:

(1) It DOES improve one's techniques. It is kind of like you play tennis (or golf, or whatever) with one arm tied to your back, or with two sand bags tied to your legs. After you untie your arm (or the sand bags), you feel like you can fly....

(2) Nietzsche (尼采,哲学家/philosopher) said: if it does not kill you, it will make you stronger...

Not every skier is that hardcore. For folks just want to get relaxed and enjoy fresh snow, icy is absolutely damper.

I just came back from whitetail. Today's condition is super good, tomorrow will be even better. We got snow today. I will be there also tomorrow. If anyone needs my help, please let me know. Note ... This season is strange because we used to prepare pond skiing the second weekend of march. Now the whole mountain is fully opened with tons of snow and without any pond. You got to go if you missed out today. Send me PM if you want to go with me together.

Just got back home.  Had the dinner in Rockville with friends.

Xin - I will be at Whitetail tomorrow.  Whitetail's trails are much *longer* than those of Liberty.  Fanciful is a good run.  I would recommend that you try Snow Park trail first to see if you feel comfortable.  If you are good with Snow Park trail, then you can try Snow Dancer and Fanciful.

I will have line-ups at 10, 12, and 2.  I can ski with you if I am not called up to teach.  PM me your phone number tonight if you will be at Whitetail tomorrow (so that I can call you).  Otherwise, you will go to the advanced class meeting place to find me 10 minutes before the line-ups.

I forgot to mention one thing!  Another strange thing!  Normally we have a big crowd on Saturday, not to mention the good condition as today.  In regular season, given the good condition like today's, the lift line will be super long.  Guess what ... there was NO line at all today!  (Probably everything think that it's season ending so nobody came.)

I don't know if anyone is coming.  I just cannot believe that there is no one coming for this super good condition.  See the snow is blowing like crazy:  natural snow today whole day and night + snow making now!

Working at Whitetail is great fun.  If you are interested in becoming a ski or snowboard instructor, please take a look the attached poster (Schools Job Fair Poster 2012) and read the Instructor Training Course Registration:

We met lots of old friends and new friends there today!  The condition was very good, and there was NO lift line at all.  The snow base now is about the same depth as that of the beginning of Febuary in normal year.  People are saying that the season will last till the end of March!  We will have some friends going there on Wednesday!  Let me know if anyone wants to join.

Call them. Explain to them that you wanted to buy the season pass last week but got tied up with something important. They might be able to make an exception for you.

Whitetail will get 12 inches natural snow from tonight to tomorrow.  We are going to ski powder tomorrow.  You got to take a snow day off for tomorrow (Wednesday).  Let me know if anyone is going!

I will be at Whitetail this weekend for both days (Saturday and Sunday).  I might not be there next weekend because we are heading to Colorado on 03/17/2013.

Let's go skiing this weekend with short sleeve or T shirts.  The finale of this wonderful winter is coming ...   I will go to Whitetail both days.  If you want to join me, please let me know!

Today at Whitetail, there was no line at all at all lifts!  The snowbase is still deep (40").  I'll be there tomorrow also to mark my 30th ski day of this season.  If anyone is there by chance, give me a call or go to advance lesson line up looking for me at: 10AM, 12noon, and 2PM.  I'll be flying to Colorado next weekend after this finale skiing.

I cleaned up my closet and took all my stuff (including my shining silver pin) back from Whitetail.  Today is my last day there for this season.  The snow base is still very deep, and they will still be open next weekend (03/16 and 17).  About the weekend (23 and 24) after next weekend, we don't know yet ...  If you are going next weekend (16 and 17), I recommend that you arrive there and start skiing early (8:30 AM), ski for 4 or 5 hours before the trails become mashed potato.  If you are planning to go the weekend after (23 and 24), you need to check Whitetail's website to know the opening hours.

Good News - Whitetail is still open this weekend (fully open), and the trails are still in white color (no potato color yet).
Bad News - Whitetail is closing Sunday at 5:00 PM.

As you know that I have taken all my stuff from my locker back home, so I won't be there this weekend.  However, I encourage you to go skiing (again) because - I've never seen the closing date without potato color (so this is a relatively good condition).

BTW ... Liberty will remain open for another week (if the weather permits) after Whitetail's close.
