Over the past few days, fraudulent emails have been circulating within the local community.

The scammers are gaining access to the email accounts of local individuals — including Torah institutions — and are then sending out false emails from those accounts with an attached file.

The email may appear to be a genuine message from a person or organisation you know. However, once the attachment is opened, the scammers may be able to take control of the computer and gain access to emails, passwords, banking information and other personal details.

Do not open any email attachment — even if it appears to come from someone you know — before contacting the sender separately and confirming that they genuinely sent it.

If you have already opened such a file:

• Immediately disconnect the computer from the internet.
• Change all your passwords from a different, secure device.
• Contact your bank immediately and inform them.
• Change the passwords for Gmail, Amazon and all other important accounts.
• Enable two-step verification wherever possible.

Dozens of people in Stamford Hill have reportedly already suffered losses amounting to thousands of pounds over the past few days.

Please be extremely careful — one click can cause very serious damage.
