In preparation for the upcoming S.E.T. which has a big reliance on simplex communications, I would like to suggest "Simplex Saturday"!

The idea is to use simplex channels only, preferably 2m to keep it simple this time.

Start by calling out on the VHF national calling channel and see who can hear you and contact you back and know that you can fully and clearly pass a message to that person.

I have included channels/frequencies for UHF for future use. We could also try something similar using HF bands in the future. But for this first attempt let's stick to 2M.

VHF    146.520MHz     YRARC CH#23
( Future trials  : UHF    446.000MHz     YRARC CH#40   )

Once you make contact, move to a different "channel" to check on your ability to send and receive a message, then move back to the calling channel to see who you can contact next. When I say "your ability to send and receive a message" I mean to be able to clearly understand and pass messages.

#21 146.4600 MHz
#22 146.4000 MHz
#23 146.5200 MHz National FM Calling Frequency
#24 146.5500 MHz
#25 146.5800 MHz

( Future Trials )
#40 446.0000 MHz National FM Calling Frequency
#41 446.0250 MHz
#42 446.0500 MHz
#43 446.0750 MHz

Try and find someone North, South, West and East of you. For example, I know that both Chris and Pablo are North of me, Paul and Roger are South of me, Alan is SouthEast, Sandy is SouthWest.

Please keep a log of the callsign, frequency, signal strength, location and the approximate distance between you and your contact and then report contacts through to emc...@yrarc.org and we will correlate the results. I will try to map the results.

I suggest three time slots to try to make your calls. 10AM, 2PM, 7PM, each just for one hour. You do not need to try all, but obviously there is a better chance of building your local network if you can.

If you can make a simplex call for voice that also means you can do a simplex Winlink Peer-2-peer call.

Remember, call on the calling frequency then move to a different agreed upon channel to try and pass some kind of message. and take down the details as defined above.

Good luck with building your local network.

I will try at 7 pm, busy before that.

Power? I'd suggest to also try on lower power once a contact is made before switching to another channel.

Two items of clarification are required.

1. This Simplex Saturday is for this upcoming Saturday 23rd October. There may be more in the future where we introduce different bands or different modes like SSB, but for this one Saturday 2M FM only.
2. Preferred communication is from your home QTH. In the future, we may branch out to either mobile or portable/field use, but we need to start with a straightforward scenario to see how this will work.

So 2M FM, Home QTH, this Saturday 23rd October. three time slots, 10AM, 2PM, 7PM, each just for one hour

Will try to see if I hear anything at 10am from wherever I am

Simplex Saturday big success on Session 1.

There was LOTS of activity on Session 1 of SImplex Saturday this morning.

Thanks to all who participated. We are building a fairly well-defined network of simplex connectivity.

Remember there are two more sessions today at 2PM and 7PM. Each session is just 1 hour long.

Join whenever you can and make lots of contacts, but mainly to see who you can contact around you to clearly send messages in an emergency.

Keep a log of signal strength and location and build your local emergency map and then share results.

Today is just about 2M FM, we will introduce different bands and modes in the near future.

Antenna is at 15m high with 50w power

On the 2PM shift I was driving on Hwy 48 past Sutton near Simcoe Lake and I was able to hear VE3IBW calling.

Thank you.

Hi Mike,

Looks like I missed all the fun in the morning time slot :-( .  The 2pm timeslot had very few participants or at least very few who could hear me or I them.

Antenna height at my QTH is about 20' and I was running 50w.  QTH location is FN04ga37.  I called CQ for the entire hour (2-3pm ET) and have limited results to report:
  1. Heard Rob RQB in Bradford calling out to another station.  Rob was 59 into my station.  However, when I called CQ, RQB did not return.  Not sure if Rob fled to another frequency or didn't hear me.
  2. My first CQ was picked up by Chris (VE3NRT).  Traded 59 signal reports.  Chris' QTH is about 5 KMs South West of my QTH.
  3. My second QSO was with Pablo while he was mobile.  This didn't really achieve your objective, Mike, of QTH based message passing.  We traded 59 signal reports nonetheless as he travelled up Bayview.  I was unable to hear Pablo once he was on the east side of Woodbine heading along Davis Dr in the North East corner of Newmarket.  I should note though that during the Health and Wellness nets, I frequently listen to the reverse and have heard Pablo at 59+.  I am sure we would be able to pass traffic on simplex.  Pablo is about 5 KMs South East of my QTH.
  4. Based on Chris' 2pm report, I can further report that I was unable to hear Roger (EZ) or Mike (MCT) when Chris was speaking to them.
  5. I was very surprised about Pablo's report that he could hear me CQ'ing while he was on the Hwy 48 side of Sutton.
