Subject: [VA3CTA] Jean Moffat VE3WAD SK

Hello,

It is with a heavy heart that I inform you that Jean Moffat, VE3WAD, long time member of the CenTor amateur radio club and volunteer at the OSC ham shack, has become a silent key.

Jean was always a welcome presence at the club and especially field day and you could always count on her for a kind word of encouragement or a cookie or two.

The OSC put out a statement (courtesy of Ward VE3WGK):

"Remembering Jean Moffett, HAM Radio Volunteer

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Jean Moffett, VE3WAD, a longtime HAM radio volunteer at the Ontario Science Centre. You may remember Jean from her time in the radio shack on Thursday and Sunday mornings with her friend Peter. Jean spent over 40 years volunteering at the Science Centre, making her our longest-serving volunteer. She started her volunteering career with us as a school group greeter before becoming a HAM radio operator. Her voice and call sign were known around the world. Not only was she one of the few female operators on the air, but her charm, warmth and love of a good story made her a popular contact.  Jean was also beloved by Science Centre visitors, inspiring young and old with her love of radio and her morse code skills. Her joyful personality was infectious.  One of Jean’s biggest wishes was to talk to an astronaut on the International Space Station (ISS). Thanks to the efforts of Science Centre staff, Jean’s wish finally came true in January 2020, when she got the chance to talk to Commander Luca Parmitano aboard the ISS. Jean volunteered at the Science Centre until June 2024—she was 101 when she visited the shack for her last time. She often said that the opportunity to operate the radio with and for visitors was the best thing to ever happen to her. We are beyond grateful to Jean for sharing her time and talents with us over the years. She will be deeply missed."

Those of us that had a chance to get to know her knew she was a special person and the club and amateur radio were enriched by her presence.

73 Jean, see you on the other side.

Clayton VE3WOZ

Treasurer, CenTor ARC
