Do I need a Heil AD-1-IC or AD-1-I adapter for a PC microphone or neither?

If possible, I would like to get this working by Field Day this weekend, so my adapter options are limited.  Actually, it means purchasing at Radio World.

Does anyone know whether a PC microphone on a headset is an electret and condenser microphone?  This determines which Heil adapter I need or it is not possible.

I know the audio part of the headset works.  I have plugged it into the phone jack on the front of the radio.

I currently still use the stock hand mic.  I would like the PC headset mic to go through the Mic connector on the front of the radio.  I am not considering using the Socket Acc on the back of the radio.  I have a foot switch.

I am not looking to purchase a Heil headset or any other brand of headset at the moment. So I am not interested purchasing in a Heil BM-10 nor a BM-17 at radio World.

I have the following items in my possession, so I just need an adaptor solution:
Thank in Advance for your help.

Sorry this is the correct statement

"Does anyone know whether a PC microphone on a headset is an electret or a condenser microphone? "

Hi John, I'm by no means an expert in this but have some experience. From my understanding most PC headsets use an electret element. I have a Koss SB/45 headset I previously used with my FT-991A and now with my IC-7300 / IC-9700, plugged into the front microphone jack. I assembled my own adapter from bits at Sayal. I'd suggest it as a good beginner soldering project but with FD tomorrow you're cutting it close. I can draw up a schematic & bill-of-materials tonight if you want.

The Heil adapter for electret mics might work just fine. My concern is I found there's some inconsistencies in how headsets are wired in terms of the 3.5mm jack pin-out. At least with my SB/45 I recall seeing forum posts complaining it didn't work with the Heil adapter without modification. It would be worth bringing your headset with you to radioworld and try it (if they'll let you) on one of the demo radios. Or just buy a fancy Heil headset!

Hi Alex,

Thanks.  I am going to think of what my next steps are.  I am not going to get the IC-7300 going before FD tomorrow.

I wanted to make both my IC-7300 and FTM-400XDR hands free.

I have picked up the following items from Radio World:
  • For the FTM-400 XDR
    •  AD-100 and AD-1-Y
  • For the IC-7300
    • AD-1-IC
I know the audio portion of my PC headset works on both the FTM-400 and the IC-7300. In both cases, the unknown is the microphone.

My research shows for the IC-7300 I need either the AD-1-IC or the AD-1-I adapter.  I took a gamble and purchased AD-1-IC.  The BM-17 requires this adapter.  Radio World said I can return it within 10 days for store credit (100%) or pay a 10% restocking fee for cash.  I have not opened the package yet.

I thought I had the FTM-400XDR figured out.  I am almost there but not quite. I purchased the AD-100 and AD-1-Y adapters and connected it up to the FTM-400XDR. I also installed the splitter between the headset and the radio. It separates the audio part of the headset from the microphone.

The sound on the headset was a bit high with the headset and there is a bit of hiss all the time. There is no issue when I use the radio's internal speaker.  Unlike other Ham radios, the FTM-400XDR uses a stereo connector and requires a stereo speaker.  While other radios require a mono speaker.  Plugging in a mono speaker in a FTM-400 will cause a short and damage the radio's audio circuits.

When I depress the foot switch I can see the radio key up for transmit.    However, I was told that they did not hear me on the radio. They thought I did not have the tone set up correctly. However, they can hear me with the stock microphone.  So it has to do with the microphone.

I suspect it could be the type of microphone (electret vs condenser) in the headset. It also could mean that I need to change some settings in the radio.

Note, the adapters with the yellow bands are the two Heil Sound adapters for the FTM-400XDR. The green plug is for the PC headset audio jack. This is plugged into the back of the FTM-400XDR. The pink plug is the PC headset's microphone plug. It is plugged into the AD-1-Y adapter. The silver/black plug is for the foot switch connection.

Icom is weird so I only use Heil IC headsets and mics

But then I have to buy Heil for the yaesu and end up with 2 sets

The pro 7 is customizable but $$$$$

Get a headset for the 7300 and forget 2m fm as riding the squelch open will drive you nuts with a headset

When I had the 9700/7300 I had 2 boom mics and foot switches left v/u and right hf.  Crazy

I expect many will run their kilowatt linears from home as if it was cqww

Check on SO2R to what those guys use

Single operator 2 radios

John, you can't run one headset off those 2 radios

Ohh....Noo...... Say It Ain't So Joe!

I was hoping to run one headset for both radios.

See my replies inline below.

From what I have read, the iCOM radios uses two types of mics.

I have narrowed the problem down to the microphone.  The audio from the PC headset works fine on the 7300.   The audio from the FTM-400XDR with the PC headset is okay.  It has a constant hiss in the backgroundI also find the voice volume to be bit low.  However, anything that is generated by the radio is very loud.

The idea was to be able use the mic and headset on different radios.  It sounds like to do this you need to stick to one brand.

Just requiring two of everything can be expensive.  A BM-17 at Radio World is $180 and headsets goes up from there.

The purpose of the FTM-400 headset was to eliminate the radio 's audio.  The XYL finds it loud if she is trying to do something else in the other room.

Do you mean for field day?  Well, if you are running at home for field day you are supposed to be limited to 150 watts. However, I expect most p[eople will ignore it and run their amplifiers.

I will check into this.

This was what I was hoping for!!  Maybe an audio mixer can resolve this problem.

I don't know but check up single operator 2 radio SO2R to see what the do but I think they have 2 identical radios

What's good on the Icom maybe too loud on yaesu

Get a 7610.  1 headset and you have 2 receivers so u can switch back and forth from 40m to 20m

52.  I worked 5 guys an hour ago and now it's dead.

Look up the Ukraine guy with mic mixers or the guy in New York

They start at $300 USA

It's a great hobby
