Hi,

I had entered my contacts in Log4OM.  I could not find a way how to extract a ADIF file with the tags POTA is looking for.  Is there a way to get Log4OM to generate the ADIF file expected by POTA

I have now manually entered my contacts in HAMRS.  I used the POTA format in HAMRS to generate the ADIF file.

Who do we submit the ADIF file to?  Using the format I see on FAQ, I am assuming our regional coordinator email address is V...@parksontheair.com.  Is this correct? or do we send to w3...@outlook.com?

Lastly, I believe the ADIF filename should be VA3...@VE-5093-20210918.adi

Hi John,

I submitted to k...@parksontheair.com.  I don't think there is a v3; the FAQ doesn't specify one.  Since your callsign has a 3, then you should use the same one.  When I activated Killarney Provincial Park in August, I sent my ADIF log to k...@parksontheair.com; no issues or redirects.

I don't know Log4OM well enough to advise you.  Log4OM has an extensive user's manual.  Did you use that to guide you in exporting either a standard ADIF and/or an ADIF with just the fields you choose?  It was on page 58 of the user's manual.

Fortunately, the ADIF file that WSJT-X generates has all the right tags (and a few extra) and I don't have to do any surgery on the file.  Here is the top of my ADIF file with one QSO for your reference.  I made no changes to the file in anyway:

Brian

I checked the chrome webstore and no luck

I will run solar through a 150 lb AGM battery that is solar powered (as designed by VE1OR) into an inverter that will power the wall wart for the netbook

I can then POTA for 8 hours with logging running

Hi Brian,

Thanks.  I had read the manual quickly when I first started to use it.  I had forgotten that I can select the tags to be included in the ADIF file.  I used the default export button.

image.png

The default format does not print every field.

After reading that portion of the manual.  I selected "Export Selected Field", selected the fields I wanted and was able to generate the ADIF.  I first tried selecting
image.png to generate the log.  I think this only saves the selected tags.  If that is not what it is for then I have no idea why it is there.  Selecting image.png generates the ADIF file.  I noticed SIG and SIG_Info tags were not in the ADIF file.  I suspect if the tag is blank they are not exported. Now I have to figure out the tag to screen field mappings.

There are a lot more Log4OM features that I need to learn.  I am learning them as I need them.

John VE3IPS is right.  Although Log4OM is my default logger, HAMRS is more suited for POTA.  I will lean towards using it.  Transferring QSOs between the two loggers shouldn't be that hard.  Using a POTA template is a lot less work to create the ADIF file.

I will stick to my ASUS convertible laptop, it runs Windows 10, for now as I can use it as a tablet or use it as a laptop.  The only issue is that it is heavier than both my iPad and old Android tablet.  I wish my laptop's USB-C connector could charge the laptop like other laptops with USB-C connectors.  I have no idea why ASUS cut this corner 😟

The cost of the software on the tablet is negligible.  It is about five Senior's Medium coffee at McDonald's or one Egg McMuffin Meal.

John VE3IPS, you could purchase a Chromebook from Costco to see if it meets your needs.  They have a 90 days no questions asked return policy on computers.

Costco has two Chromebook available in their warehouse that you can pick up immediately.  They are around $400+HST.  I believe this Acer is in the warehouse.

Here is their website.

There was a $99 chromnebook with good reviews as a refurb but HamRS wont work on it so I am back to using it on an android

I like paper logs actually for regular stuff which why I dont have the QRZ.com WAC Friendship Award for making 5 contacts or something

BTW Qrz.com is now pushing for $39 a yr fees to continue making millions    so if you log on qrz.com then they will screw u soon

Hi John (BOF)

I've used HamRS because I didn't take my computer to the park. I wrote the QSOs on a piece of paper and for typing them HamRS is easier than Log4OM.

Here are instructions for Log4OM that you are missing. It seems that you already figured out how to export the ADIF.

Where the info goes in Log4OM?
Take a look below:

This is a real example from my activation on Saturday for P2P - Note the "Comment" field I wrote "p2p":
2021-09-20 15.56.53.png

Contact's details - Note the "Sig Info" field - You write there the OTHER person park reference:
2021-09-20 15.56.57.png

In "My QTH" you have the fields that you need to enter for YOUR park - Field "My Sig" = POTA and field "My Sig Info"=VE-5093 (your park)
2021-09-20 15.57.06.png

That's all really.

Now you don't need to enter all this information one by one in Log4OM - You can use the bulk edit option.

From the Menu select Utilities -> QSO Manager
Select all contacts that you made at the park and click button "Single field update" (example below)
2021-09-20 (3).png

Select Field to update and set to MySig enter POTA en value and click on Update button. All the previously selected QSOs will have that value now.
2021-09-20 (4).png

Select Field to update and set to MySigInfo and enter your park reference and click on Update button. All the previously selected QSOs will have that value now.

Hope that helps.

John,
will echo what Brian mentioned as to sending the log to k...@parksontheair.com has been working well the past few months.

Since I'm doing SSB/voice in the parks, I do paper log in the field (it's fast and don't have to worry about another piece of tech to play with or fail or read screens in daylight). Also means I can take notes and work the PTT with my other hand instead of typing or delay in calling another CQ or QRZ.

I hear other POTA ops out there and you can tell they are entering stuff on their phone/tablet/laptop since there are significant delays in responses. They'll say QRZ and you have a long delay until they come back since they are typing. Sometimes the delays are long enough to wonder if they are still there?
I want the "hunters" out there to have a good experience, and if I'm getting a pileup, that I'm working the calls quickly and efficiently that they know they'll get through in a few minutes at worst. That way they'll stick around. So for me, it's pen/paper when live in a park.

I then enter the logs into HAMRS on my computer at home. ya, it's a pain to re-enter, but if I max out at 10-25 QSO, then I've had fun and I'm done.

I'm sorry I didn't stick around to see your final setup in operation. I'm glad you got it all going.
cheers, 73,
.paul.

Thank you everyone for all your help.  I have just submitted my log for VE-5093.

Pablo, thank you for the Log4OM instructions.  I only had 20 QSOs to transfer to Log4OM.  So it was quick to transfer the 20 QSOs into HAMRS.  I would not like to do this all the time.  I am not a quick typist.  HAMRS is fairly easy to use.  I am not sure whether I will stick with Log4OM or switch to HAMRS as my POTA logger.

I had my convertible 2-in-1 Windows 10 laptop with me at the park so I used it.  At 1.4 Kgs, it is not too heavy to transport.  The big bonus is that it has a 14" screen to help my poor old eyes 👀 😝👀 plus it has a keyboard if I need it.   I used my cell phone to give internet access for my QRZ lookups.  I do use other look up sites.

The thing I like about Log4OM is that it automatically records the frequency of the QSO.  I used Pablo's instruction to do a bulk update of the Log4OM records.

I learned from last week's POTA session that I should look at a faster way to set up my antenna without using two 10 feet top rails.  They were difficult and heavy to transport.

John, HAMRS may work with a newer Chromebook.

I submit all my POTA logs to K...@parksontheair.com

It seems is a group email address, as not always the same person responds to me when my log is uploaded to the system.

I saw my 20 QSOs in POTA.US.  So my submissions are good

I forgot to mention, I sent my ADIF file to k...@parksontheair.com.   My QSOs were logged by Matthew Brown.
