Thanks. I am going to think of what my next steps are. I am not going to get the IC-7300 going before FD tomorrow.
I wanted to make both my IC-7300 and FTM-400XDR hands free.
- For the FTM-400 XDR
- For the IC-7300
I know the audio portion of my PC headset works on both the FTM-400 and the IC-7300. In both cases, the unknown is the microphone.
My research shows for the IC-7300 I need either the AD-1-IC or the AD-1-I adapter. I took a gamble and purchased AD-1-IC. The BM-17 requires this adapter. Radio World said I can return it within 10 days for store credit (100%) or pay a 10% restocking fee for cash. I have not opened the package yet.
I thought I had the FTM-400XDR figured out. I am almost there but not quite. I purchased the AD-100 and AD-1-Y adapters and connected it up to the FTM-400XDR. I also installed the splitter between the headset and the radio. It separates the audio part of the headset from the microphone.
The sound on the headset was a bit high with the headset and there is a bit of hiss all the time. There is no issue when I use the radio's internal speaker. Unlike other Ham radios, the FTM-400XDR uses a stereo connector and requires a stereo speaker. While other radios require a mono speaker. Plugging in a mono speaker in a FTM-400 will cause a short and damage the radio's audio circuits.
When I depress the foot switch I can see the radio key up for transmit. However, I was told that they did not hear me on the radio. They thought I did not have the tone set up correctly. However, they can hear me with the stock microphone. So it has to do with the microphone.
I suspect it could be the type of microphone (electret vs condenser) in the headset. It also could mean that I need to change some settings in the radio.
Note, the adapters with the yellow bands are the two Heil Sound adapters for the FTM-400XDR. The green plug is for the PC headset audio jack. This is plugged into the back of the FTM-400XDR. The pink plug is the PC headset's microphone plug. It is plugged into the AD-1-Y adapter. The silver/black plug is for the foot switch connection.
