This week's exercise asks you to send and receive Peer-to-peer messages. I am leaving my station on this week so you can try to reach it here in west Aurora. I'm in a reasonably high location with the 2m antenna up 55' so it should be reachable from a good distance. I will run 24 hours on 2m, then 24 hours on 80m, then 24 hours on 2m again. After that, by request.

PDF with instructions is attached.

It seems the receiver's callsign must always be specified in the P2P session window, but is there any way to determine who might be out there and ready to accept a P2P connection? Other than coordinating through other methods of communication. I know Vara has the ping feature, but it still requires an addressee. Maybe an APRS beacon with the info.

If you initiate a P2P connection to someone, would you receive a P2P message addressed to you that was in their Outbox? Or is the caller only there to send?

Also, I am interested in trying to make P2P connections with anyone else around.
I was able to reach Chris VE3NRT this evening.

I am generally in Markham during the day, and Newmarket in the evening.  I can use VARA FM Wide UHF/VHF, and Packet 1200 (maybe 9600 too?) from my mobile.

Matthew,

Message received. You indeed need to specify the recipient's call in both the message and the connection. For emergency use I would expect this to be either prearranged or coordinated by voice communications. If you send a P2P message you should receive anything in the other party's outbox. I have acknowledged your read receipt and posted a message to everyone that is waiting in my outbox. I'll be out all day today but I can try outbound connections with anyone who wants to this evening.

73,
Chris

Thank you, Chris.
I connected to you again this morning and received the message addressed to me.

Hi Ian,
I will try to connect when I’m back home this evening. I am in Markham now and cannot reach you.
If anyone is in southern York Region, please try me on 145.05 VARA FM. I’ll be online for the next 45 minutes or so. I’m also willing to try Packet, or to connect to you.
I’ll be listening to the repeater as well.

Hi All, So far I could connect only to Ian, VA3QT (5 watts, S/N +19.3dB) I'll also stay on this freq for now and pump it to 50 watts.

FYI. I also hear the Lindsay Packet machine fairly well on 145.05 - VE3LNZ sending mostly to VE3MUS-1:

Benny was an easy connect from here. No response from VA3QT though so perhaps a bit far, but could get there with Benny digipeating. Switching to 80m after the H&W net. Then back to 2m after tomorrow's H&W net. Mike VA3MCT RMS is also easy from here so we have a N/S path through the region and beyond.

Chris, I could see you trying to reach VA3QT from Markham. Interesting that VARA shows you who’s trying to reach who.

Mathew,

I see where you connected to me P2P but no traffic exchanged.  I've put a second P2P message in the hopper for you.  No info on you in QRZ so don't know where you are located.

Just connected to VE3MUU on 145.050 and uploaded my message to him.  Nice signal.

Ian

Due to RTTY activity I've moved my 80m frequency up 10 kHz to 3.594 centre frequency and 3.592.5 dial frequency (upper sideband).

It is running now.

Just finished our Wednesday Tech Google meet and we were able to get VE3XYU connected P2P to both Ian, VA3QT and Barry, VA3LLT, using me as digipeater (VE3MUU-3).

Will try a couple of portable 80M antennas tomorrow...

Cheers

Thanks Ian. I'm in Newmarket, FN04gb, and I think I was just a little bit too far away.
Benny showed me how to use him as a Digipeater and get through to you. I was also able to connect to Barry VA3LLT

I believe I'm also set up to digipeat now on 145.05, as VE3XYU-3. If anyone would like to try to connect to me, or through me, please go ahead.  I am monitoring the computer but will shut it down in an hour or two.

My VARA FM makes too connection attempts and I can see what looks like 3 responses on the waterfall, but no data exchange... 75 Watts from Richmond Hill, 145.050MHz. I will try tomorrow during daylight hours, the noise floor should be much lower on 2m.

Hi Nikolai,

I saw you connecting but no message. Did you have a p2p message in your outbox for me and the was the connection p2p to VE3NRT? Those are the only things I can think of.  The signal sounded fine. I tried to connect to you soon afterward but it didn't connect. I didn't hear your station responding at all.

I hope you have more success tomorrow. I retested my setup with Mike's VE3MCT and it was working fine, although the transfer speed was a bit lower at 2500 bps.

Hi Chris,
I received your test message and I believe that my message also was delivered.

Things became better in the morning as I saw that the two stations started to exchange information. It was not good enough to get a message through though. The connection would be lost after a few requests/responses. I played with using a preamp but it did not help.

Since the noise on receive apparently was at play here, I decide to apply a digital filter to the incoming signals to reduce their bandwidth. It would eliminate possibility of using VARA FM wide mode but at least there was a chance to get a message through. Finally, with 7KHz filter, the things were good enough for a reliable exchange of the messages.

All,
I realize this exercise was a month ago, but I've been working on the HF side of it for that long. With a lot of help from Roger VE3EZ, we were able to make a VARA P2P connection on 40m today.
Very happy about that!
Thanks again Roger!

Thanks! It was at about 3PM.
In the evening, I'm not able to hit anything local on 40m. It's interesting to see how my signal spreads out as it turns from day to night, as (I believe) the D layer disappears. The other night, the closest I could be heard was Chicago.
