I believe that our operators have now become fairly fluent at using their station to send and receive messages, fill in forms, collect weather information and use multiple session types to get that information, whether telnet over the internet, ARDOP, Packet, VARA HF or VARA FM.

The number of people responding to and / or taking part in the Winlink Wednesday challenges has fallen off over the last several months.

So, with the Summer now n full force and people taking vacations, I will take a break from sending out the series of challenges. We may resume in September.

But,.... Now it's your turn. Anyone can respond to this forum email address so let's hear from you with your suggestions for WInlink Wednesday.

Anyone can send in a challenge, though we are focused on Winlink, I would suggest anything that might help in an emergency situation such as VarAC would also be a good challenge without straying too far from the subject of the forum.

When setting up a challenge try to think of things that everyone can get involved in as opposed to extreme specialist areas like running VARA on a Raspberry Pi.

Dear WinLink Group

Firstly we need to thank Mike for his dedicated leadership on the emergency preparedness efforts in leading, mentoring and vision--Thanks Mike--well done. I look forward to the next round of WL Wednesdays in the fall.

Secondly I want to share one of my recent WL challenges and what I need to move ahead

Some background:
I live in that little pocket of Thornhill bounded by the 404 and 407--the SW quadrant of the intersection.  Parallel to the 407 there are 4 rows of hydro towers about 300 yards from my home.  As well my elevation is lower than most of York region south of the moraine.  Needless to say my Northward VHF capabilities are limited.

I have tried many times to use HF to reach north of the moraine but unsuccessfully as my HF long-wire is limited by the size and configuration of my back yard.

So a few weeks ago I built a temporary NVIS dipole for 40 meters.  It is temporary in that it is mostly waterproof but not winter-proof. It is hung on the wooden fence between me and my neighbours about 6 Ft off the ground and the feed coax runs thru a basement window.  It mostly runs 4 ft from the wall of my house.  After some tweeking I have a low swr and on 40 M I have been very surprised to contact many RMS station in the USA.  But the best part is that I have been able to reliably contact WLR in Barrie.

This leads me to think that I may be able to contact WL stations in the North end of York region on 40M which I can't do on VHF.  So my request is to all the group but particularly to those in North YR to try some 40M P2P WL testing. My schedule is flexible so if you are interested, please send me a note   rogera...@rocketmail.com to set up a P2P test.

If the tests prove successful, I will rebuild the antenna to a more sustainable configuration.

thanks in advance  73  rog
