** Datasets
WING folks have been busy putting together datasets and corpora for
helping others replicate and better our research. There have been
several finished this quarter, with a few more in the works.
- Term and Definition Mining Corpus This corpus contains one manually
annotated and one automatically extracted dataset. Both are derived
from the ACL Anthology Corpus and contain definitional sentences with
definiendum (term) and definiens (definition) marked out. - Compiled
by Yiping Jin. To be presented at EMNLP 2013 in a few weeks time.
Dataset:

- Weibo Joint Chinese Word Segmentation / Informal Word Recognition
Corpus: This is the corpus with annotations done in Aobo's ACL 2013
paper. Compiled by Aobo Wang. Dataset:
http://wing.comp.nus.edu.sg/downloads/weiboCWSIWRData/
- Enlil Document Collection: Gold standard data for author-affiliation
matching. This dataset is described in the Hoang et al. 2013 JCDL
paper, entitled "Extracting and Matching Authors and Affiliations in
Scholarly Documents". Dataset:
http://wing.comp.nus.edu.sg/downloads/enlilCollection/
- Chaptrs Personal Photograph Dataset - This is the dataset described
in Jesse's 2013 short JCDL paper entitled "Constructing an Anonymous
Dataset From the Personal Digital Photo Libraries of Mac App Store
Users", comprising of data of over 470K photos in 60K photosets.
Compiled by Jesse Prabawa Gozali. Dataset:

- ParsCit - WING's software to extract metadata from scholarly PDFs
has been recently updated (version 130908) to incorporate changes from
our JCDL 2013 paper. You may want to pull it from github or take a
standalone .zip file if you have been working in this area. See the
ParsCit home page:

** Other News
- Congratulations to Dr. Jesse Prabawa Gozali, for defending his Ph.D.
thesis entitled "Event Photo Stream Segmentation: Chapter-based photo
organization for personal digital photo libraries" successfully on 7
August 2013! Jesse has now gone on to work at Mobilewalla
Incorporated, a local start-up (also technically advised by Min) which
works on mobile application -- "app" -- ranking.
- Min has been made Assistant Dean to the undergraduate office of our
School of Computing. Part of his work will be to continue to network
with feeder schools (junior colleges and polytechnics) and industry,
in programs like our first year Orbital self-learning MOOC-style web
application course (
http://orbital.comp.nus.edu.sg). If you're
interested in learning more about our School of Computing and how we
can help your company or school, do contact Min.
- Visitors: A/P Yutaka Matsuo of Univ. of Tokyo visited us in August
and introduced his lab's recent work in crowdsourcing to WING and the
School. More recently, Nicolas Asher also shared his recent research
with the NLP group as well as WING. We look forward to more upcoming
visits. If you're interested in stopping by WING or NUS, please do
let us know.
- PhD Flyer: If you know of any prospective students who are
interested in doing their Ph.D. and coming out to SE Asia, perhaps you
can refer them to our programme? Our school has a 1-page PDF flyer
that you could circulate to folks whom might be interested:
http://www.comp.nus.edu.sg/~kanmy/NUS_PhD.pdf
- Alumni of WING: let us know any news items about you. Drop by and
say 'hello'! Feel free to come back for our semesterly outings to
touch base with all of us. Last semester we were out at Sushi Tei at
Vivocity, celebrating Jin and Jesse doctoral defenses!
- Past issues of our newsletter can be found on our installation of
Google Groups, right here:
https://groups.google.com/a/wing.comp.nus.edu.sg/forum/#!forum/wingnews
- We are also on LinkedIn and on Facebook. See you around those
virtual social circles!
Cheers,
Min (A/P Min-Yen KAN)
