Large language models
hashtag#LLMsΒ with multi-tasking capabilities have emerged in the last several years and made traditional
hashtag#NLPΒ tasks obsolete. It is fair to say that the field of NLP is dead. LLMs research has both expanded beyond traditional NLP areas and replaced the latter. Quo Vadis NLP?
Prof.
Pascale FungΒ proposes a new framework of language research that looks into mental world modelling, which parallels physical world modelling. Language both represents and shapes the βmental world modelsβ of humans, enabling us to reason, plan, emote, learn,
innovate and create. Therefore, natural language research should endeavour to come up with better and more efficient mental world models than current LLMs. The scope of βlanguageβ should expand to include non-iconographic languages such as gesture and music.
NLP research can thrive again, leading to new innovations in
hashtag#AI.
Organized as part of Singapore AI Research Week, this lecture is open to the public.
