Dear all:

[TL;DR] Call for your help to organise SSNLP '25!  Please tell others to join this list to be a part of this grassroots initiative

At the NExT++ Workshop yesterday morning, I met Nancy Chen (i2R), and the topic of conversation turned to SSNLP next year.

1/ She told me that NAII (NUS AI Institute) is also working on an "AI Week" that synergises with our idea of putting SSNLP 2025 next to ICLR 25 in Apr.

As such, Nancy will be our contact to coordinate and inform other agencies and AI initiatives about our work.  I discussed with Nancy that IMDA is also interested in being a primary anchoring sponsor.

2/ I think we have had a few volunteers to lead our SSNLP 2025 initiative. I recall from the previous threads on SING that we have Lizi (SMU), Albert (NTU), Michael (NUS) and a possible site at SUTD (from Soujanya), might work well to coordinate the organisation.  However, it seems we have a bit of the "dining philosophers" problem in that we need to coalesce a organisational committee for next year's SSNLP.

If your name is not on the list and you'd like to help, please reply.  We need someone interested to take the lead.  April 2025 isn't too far away, so we should ask our volunteer group to coordinate a conference call to decide roles soon.

The SSNLP '24 Organising Committee (CC:ed) might also join the call to help with the organisation transition.

Regards,

Min
P.S.: I think SSNLP is a perfect "sandboxed" training ground for our senior students, postdocs and assistant professors to earn their chops with organisational duties that are one hallmark of senior roles later on; please raise your hand if you fall in this group or if you're more senior, please check with your juniors to see whether they'd be up for a learning challenge!

Hi Prof Min,

Thanks for sending out the call! I am interested to lead and help with the transition with the Singapore Symposium on Natural Language Processing 2025 (SSNLP 2025) after having a successful SSNLP 2024. It is exciting to see how we can make SSNLP 2025 even better.

Here are several areas where we could improve and make SSNLP better, such as

  1. Offering printing services for poster presentations.
  2. Perhaps having a panel discussion to facilitate more interaction and insight (e.g., topics like NLP development in Singapore, involving local agencies such as GovTech and AI Singapore)
  3. Having better goodie bags!

Also, I agree that April 2025 is really not too far away! I suggest that we could jump into another communication channel for further discussions - How about Slack?

Best Regards,
Ming Shan

Hi Min,

Thank you for leading the efforts for SSNLP 2025 🙂

SUTD is excited to host the event and can provide a large venue along with support for administrative tasks.

We’ve also enlisted Ming Shan from SUTD to assist with the organization. I believe it’s a good time to form a working committee and finalize the venue.

In the meantime, I can continue discussions with IMDA and coordinate with our admin team to soft-book the venue until we either secure an alternative location or receive confirmation from the working committee.

Hi Min and Everyone,

Just to add to Soujanya's point. If we can get the confirmation and finalize the dates for SSNLP'25, we can approach the SUTD admin to secure the venue :) I am assuming that we are planning this in consideration of ICLR's dates?

Cheers,
Roy

Dear all,

I took the liberty of creating a link for scheduling our kick-off meeting some time Jan 6 to Jan 11, 2024: https://lettucemeet.com/l/ROnxJ

To indicate your availability, click "add availability" on the top right, and paint over the time slots that you are available.

I realize this is sent to a large mailing list. Anyone receiving this is welcome to join. But if you show up, you may be asked to help out. 🙂

Cheers,

Albert

Hi Boyang,

Shall we proceed with scheduling the kick-off meeting for next week? Eight people have responded so far, and based on their availability, Thursday between 12:00 PM and 2:00 PM appears to be the most suitable time. We could schedule the meeting on Thursday from either 12:00–1:00 PM or 1:00–2:00 PM?

Best Regards,
Ming Shan

Thank you for the reminder, Ming Shan.

The people who responded to the survey are: Cao Yixin, Wenxuan Zhang, Albert Li, Lizi Liao, Hee Ming Shan, Wu Shengqiong (volunteering for Website Chair), Wang Wenya, and Roy Lee.

Hi Boyang and all,

Sorry I wasn't able to join last week - was on an overseas biz trip. Is there an online working document for meeting minutes and follow-up action items I can read and and update (e.g. keynote speakers, ICLR, MDDI) accordingly.

Thanks,
Nancy
