Hi there,

Hope everyone is doing well! Some of us at NUS and SMU have been discussing organizing another edition of the Singapore Symposium on Natural Language Processing (SSNLP) this year. As most of you know, SSNLP is a platform for NLP research that we in SG host to do outreach with external scholars as well as to promote interchange between scholars and different PI groups doing NLP and related areas. It has been doing well over the past few years. Here's the link for last year, and it also lists previous runs - https://wing-nus.github.io/SSNLP-2022/

This year, we plan to piggyback off of speakers and senior scientists going to Bali for IJCNLP-AACL in Nov (1-4) or coming to Singapore for EMNLP in December (6-10), and interested in coming/coming early for a session here in SG. Thus, the date for the event would ideally be around Nov 6 or Dec 1-5. Besides that, we'll have our regular feature of local presentations and posters accepted at a recent conference/WIP for submission.

We'd love for more people to get involved as this event flourishes through cross-institute collaboration. So far, Wei Gao of SMU has kindly agreed to help me co-organize - thanks Wei! Please raise your hand if you're interested in being part of SSNLP again this year! Also, do let us know if you could help connect us to industry contacts/possible funders, and if we're missing out on someone not on this mailing list.

I will circulate a planning document around in a day or two.

Thanks
Kokil

Hi Kokil, all:

Thanks for the initiative on this!  I think that would be great.  AACL-IJCNLP and EMNLP are good targets.  I can help delegate some folks from my lab to help if needed.  Let me know what you need!  Do you have a coordination document to work off of?

Cheers,

Min

Thank you, Wei for the offer -- that would be awesome! and thank you Min, for the continued guidance!
Thanks also to Dr. Suzanna Sia for agreeing to help! :D I will check in with you both probably Wednesday, once we have a few more details in from everyone.

I am looking for a co-organizer at NUS, so if anyone would like to self-nominate, that would be awesome too.

Below is the link to a planning document:
Can I ask you to please fill in your tentative availability and preferences by Wednesday?
We need to finalize the date based on everyone's availability. As mentioned, our main options are close-to-AACL-IJCNLP or close-to-EMNLP.

Thanks everyone!
Kokil

Dear everyone, thanks to those of you who signed up, and thanks to Dr. Yanxia Xin for volunteering to co-organize with Dr. Wei Gao and me.
Welcome aboard, Yanxia! We will be in touch with you and Suzanna soon :)

Dear all, if you haven't found the time to reach out or look at the sheet yet - better now than never :)
I'm about to post this to a broader group of email addresses that I have, so I apologize for cross-posting.

Thank you!

Thanks everyone who has responded so far – another reminder to please update the numbers in the planning document: https://tinyurl.com/ssnlp23-coordination

We need to arrive at a tentative event date as soon as possible, and I still don’t know if people have a date preference.

Also, we’re applying for NUS School of Computing to fund us – for which purposes, we are collecting stats and evidence about the impact of SSNLP over the past few years.

Notably, can I get inputs from everyone regarding:

  • Attendance and financial support by industry partners?
  • Any success stories that came out from past workshops?  (e.g., students getting hired, new collaborations, new grants etc)

Thanks!

Hi all:

I have a few success stories that I can share:

1. I have one Ph.D. recent alumnus who indirectly got his job by being introduced to other faculty through SSNLP.  So you can could Ph.D. permanent position in NLP (retained in Singapore)

2. I have one MS alumnus that likely (we're not 100% sure) that also got networked in a similar fashion.

3. I have heard a few UG students tell me that the SSNLP event helped them think of research as a possible career because they got to see a wider spectrum of Ph.D. student research work.  Some stayed locally and others went overseas.

Cheers,

Min

Thanks Min!

We want to put in a request for funding this week, so we’d love it if there were more such stories to share!

Action items for the rest of us in bold.

  1. Are there other success stories from the rest of us re hiring and placement through SSNLP?

It looks like we’re converging on a pre-EMNLP date!!! (4 or 5 Dec) Knowing this, I’m inviting you back into the planning doc to focus on stuff in yellow - https://tinyurl.com/ssnlp23-coordination:

  1. can people check with their collaborator/friend network if they’re definitely attending, and who’d be perfect as speakers? We can probably host around 4-5 people and also have time for paper presentations.
  2. We’re hitting a great participation number but you do have to tell us about your presentation numbers. Could people add to the “Paper list” at the bottom of the shared doc, as the purpose of SSNLP at the core is still to showcase local research 😊 we can’t have the event if no one wants to share their research, plz. I realize we don’t want to violate anonymity, so perhaps just put a placeholder in the list, the way I have, and we’ll confidentially reach out for more info.

Also, thank you @Nancy F. Chen @Soujanya Poria and @Wei Lu for letting us know about your visitors in advance! Please do check with them if pre-EMNLP timings work (and it would be lovely if you can spare them for a little bit for an SSNLP talk 😉 )

Thanks everyone!

Hope everyone had a good weekend!

Keeping this thread alive – we’re converging on the invited speaker list as well, and we’re setting up the website at https://wing-nus.github.io/ssnlp-2023/index.html

Speak now if Dec 5 won’t work for some reason!

Hi everyone

Hope people are well! Thanks for populating our document with suggested speakers and papers. One can now anticipate that the numbers will go further up after Oct 5 😊

We’re getting more requests for people/students to join SSNLP this year – the more the merrier!

We the organizers will start going over suggested speakers and sending out invitations this week, so ping us and add to the planning doc if any new names strike you. - https://tinyurl.com/ssnlp23-coordination

Hi everyone

As we try to secure funding, here’s a budget proposal for NUS School of Computing that includes the draft of the program and possible invitees.

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1J81hmmOKwFD7zR9IhvTuKcZVraiIiVH-27KUSNCn4vI/edit?usp=sharing

Please feel free to add your thoughts and comments especially with regards to the program –

  1. Current keynote durations are based on SSNLP 2019 and they are definitely short but perhaps appropriate for our purpose. The duration felt just nice in the packed room at SSNLP 2019. Are eight too many though?
  2. Ideas and nominees for the career panel, or contact info of whom we could involve?
  3. Ideas for ASEAN keynote speakers?
  4. Organizing Committee – I’ve put responsibilities against each of our names, but please reach out if you think you’re better suited to a different role.
