I'd like to formally welcome everyone to the USGweb mailing list! As part of the list, you are helping to connect web developers across the University System of Georgia and build a better web for us, our end-users, and the university system as a whole!

To begin, please introduce yourself and tell us a little about what web development on campus. Specifically, we'd like to hear about:
  1. Your name and title.
  2. Your university/college of employment.
  3. Your department, school, or division.
  4. Your day-to-day duties with web.
  5. Your hopes for USG as a working group.
I'll get the ball rolling on this by introducing myself!

My name is Eric Sembrat, I'm a Web Manager for the College of Engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology. I help develop web standards for each of the schools in the College of Engineering, as well as build custom websites for units and groups within the Dean's Office.

Because Georgia Tech is a distributed web development community working primarily with Drupal, I work on both internal projects as well as campus-wide initiatives (such as a Sass-template subtheme for websites, microsite distribution, and custom code for features). My hope with USGweb is to meet other like-minded web developers using open-source web development tools and help share our resources, organizational structures, and administrative workflows to help build 'Drupal at GT'-like communities at each of the universities/colleges in USG!

Thanks again for helping to make USGweb great!

Hi everyone!

I'm a Web Applications Developer for the Distance Learning department at the University of West Georgia, in Carrollton. I mostly work in PHP and MySQL, but cover whatever needs to be done with our web assets, including working in our campus CMS, OpenText. I also develop and support internal, database-driven tools, web forms, and so on. Beyond development tools and practices, I'm interested in GIS, data visualization, and data science topics. I hope this group becomes a great source for all of us to learn from each other and network.

I also lead the AtlantaPHP User Group, which meets on the first Thursday of every month at a new Atlantic Station location (our Nov. 6th meeting isn't posted yet), so check out http://atlantaphp.org and http://meetup.com/atlantaphp if you're interested. Let me know if I can answer any questions!

Hi!
I work for Berry College up in Rome, GA. I'm responsible for developing and maintaining our Learning Management System, vikingweb.berry.edu.  We're using Jenzabar JICS / eLearning, Feith, Microsoft IIS, and SQL.  -For personal projects I've always used PHP, MySQL, and sometimes WordPress. I also enjoy SEO.

Currently I'm learning to configure a F5 virtual load balancer as well as implementing BigBlueButton for a handful of online courses to be taught for next summer.  Any tips for that would be greatly appreciated :)

This is me... https://www.linkedin.com/in/clintonjrobinson

Thanks and I look forward to working with you all,

I'm Stephanie Sharp, IT Senior Manager Web Services, Franklin College, The University of Georgia. I manage a team of front end and application developers. I am also an SEO consultant for our Departments, a user interface designer, and project manager.

My background includes 17 years as founder and owner of a Web Application Development company in Athens GA. I retired that company about a year ago to take this opportunity with UGA. Frankly, I am not missing the game of billing, collection and taxes!

I am joining this group in hopes of meeting other Drupal oriented shops. Want to know the exciting ways they are using Drupal. Also interested in what other folks are doing to max out the speed of Drupal. I find it to be resource heavy and slow at times. Please ping me if you have struggled with speed as well, and tell me what you have done to mitigate those issues.

Hello everyone! My name is Gene Liverman and I'm a Systems Administrator at the University of West Georgia in Carrollton. I work as part of our central IT department.

Most of my day to day duties are more on the side of infrastructure but I do web development on my own time. To take a queue from another post I read, this is me: http://www.linkedin.com/in/geneliverman/

I'm a long time fan of Drupal (first site deployed on it in 2007) and have recently found the joys of Ruby on Rails, CSS preprocessing, and mixins. I also do work in PHP fairly often but am far from an expert. I have experience working with a variety of database backends including MySQL / MariaDB, PostgreSQL, MSSQL, & Oracle. Recently I have been working with our web team to figure out how to integrate Git & Puppet into their workflow.

My hopes for this group are kinda lofty: I want to meet other geeks who are willing to share knowledge and would love to find ways for us to collaborate so that all our jobs can be that much easier. I'm also hoping that this group helps us avoid reinventing the wheel at least once in a while.

On a side note, I'm a primary administrator of UWG's Google Apps (which is where this list lives) and am happy to share what I know.

Hi all. I'm Dave Falke. I currently work for an NIH-funded project called EuPathDB. The project itself is about 10 years old, so I deal with quite a bit of legacy code. Half of the staff for the project (including myself) is housed in the Center for Tropical and Emerging Global Diseases at UGA (the other half is at UPenn).

I'm mainly a JavaScript developer, but I also write some Java and Ruby. Most of my duties are related to front-end code. I'm hoping to share my experiences with and to learn from others in the community.

Hi everyone!  I work at UGA's Griffin campus and my official title is IT Professional Principal, although the recent redesign of the campus web site and its maintenance (as well as maintenance of the web server) fall under my purview since I have a degree in web design.  This is my first web job so I'm still getting comfortable with the day to day work rather than it just being a hobby.  I'm currently getting more acquainted with PHP and MySQL, and am trying to implement a CMS on my server - so I'm working both front and and back end at the moment.  I hope to be able to use this group as a resource if I get stuck, and to get to know some of the other geeks in USG.

  3. Your department, school, or division: Technology Services Division (full time); Division of Online Learning (part time)
  4. Your day-to-day duties with web:
    • Full time job: Maintaining the college web sites, running on a LAMP stack. I code primarily in PHP with some Javascript thrown in on the side and utilize MYSQL for the back end. I've hand written the closest thing we have to a CMS, and I unfortunately struggle to keep up with it.
    • Part time job: Working with Online Learning to set up courses that are iframed into D2L - we're doing this because of some special features that are desired but cannot run natively inside of D2L. We run the pages off of our secure server so that D2L doesn't throw any errors to the students when they load up the iframed pages inside the classroom environment.

  4. Your day-to-day duties with web: I support existing web applications (Drupal 6 & 7, plus a few custom PHP apps) and develop new ones in order to address campus/departmental needs that aren't being met by 3rd party software. I also do some light server management on the SUSE VMs that I've been given for development and production. We're a very small department so I get to put my hands in a little bit of everything (Banner, Oracle, Grails, Wordpress, training student workers, etc.), but web application development with Drupal takes up the largest chunk of my time.
  5. Your hopes for USG as a working group: I hope to learn lots of new things and get a sense of how other institutions are solving common problems. Application development is a relatively new addition to my department. Previously, we were called Data Management and were primarily responsible for managing and maintaining Banner. As such, we're still trying to establish best practices and grow into our new role as painlessly as possible. Advice is welcome!

Hello Everyone,

I'm Randy Brown, the Web Administrator at Chattahoochee Technical College. I was hired a little over a  month ago to be essentially the go-to guy on all things web here at CTC. I spent the past 15 years as the owner of a web consulting firm in North Georgia, so the State/School environment is new for me.

This is a brand new position at the school and we are going to push forward here to develop a better site that's really catering to the needs of our students. We are actively researching several technologies to improve our Internal and External webs.

I work IN the Technology Advancement & Support department, but I work closely WITH the Marketing Department as well. My day-to-day duties include research, testing and implementation of web technologies including server upgrades. Until we hire a replacement for a recently vacated position, I am also supporting an internal SharePoint intranet.

What do I hope? Hmmm... I hope we can share successes as well as failures in this group openly. I've been in web development since the late 90s. I've seen lots of things come and go and I'm always eager to explore new technologies (even though I've been burned enough in my career that I don't jump on new tech before I do extensive testing) and I know groups like this are places where we can share and learn and grow. I'm very excited about the opportunity to learn and grow.

Web here at GT is similar to your situation. A majority of web developers on campus report TO Communications/Marketing for units but work closely WITH IT/technology. I imagine many campuses are similar in this regard (GSU, I know), with KSU being the outlier as far as I was aware.

Feel free to create a thread for discussions on SharePoint. I know I would love to know more about SharePoint intranet tips and tricks, as we're trying to find avenues for using SharePoint in units across GT's campus.

Welcome Randy and yeah for seeing another TCSGer here!

As some of you know, I worked at UGA for many years (let’s not count… ) in the UGA Libraries. I sometimes think the real heart of my job there was to be the “translator” between the cataloging department (metadata work in the Libraries’ ILS)  and well… everybody else… from the public services folks to the system and programmers folks.  J I did some web stuff (mostly the blog, a Wordpress installation) and departmental pages; I served on the Web Advisory Group for many years…. and lots of database cleanup, in between all of that.

Now, I’m part of the ATCx3 Consortia (Athens Tech, Albany Tech, Atlanta Tech)  in a more IT related position (Portal Manager) in the Center for Teaching & Learning.  The heart of my current job is bringing up a public repository (digital library software) of open education resources/textbooks and other faculty support materials. My other duties: faculty and staff technology training (including social media and 3D learning environments), eportfolios (development of templates, training), web support for the dept. and the project grant, research on new technologies (3D!), and various other activities. At the Athens campus, I work primarily with CTL, the faculty, and IT; for the partnering institutions, I work primarily with the grant manager and instructional designers. I do a little social media for work (gotta promote those training sessions!)

How is it, working with and managing a large WP network?  We've been flirting with the idea at Georgia Tech of a more locked-down, easier-to-maintain kind of infrastructure for some websites. I'd love to know what it's like.

Wishing you a lovely weekend,

GSU's got a good curation of plugins! Jessica just rules like that.

Hi. I'm Bryce Jackson and I am the Web Programmer at Columbus State University.

We have a centralized web team (which is currently a part of ITS), so we manage any site that resides in our server environment. The majority of our websites are managed through our CMS, OmniUpdate. I mainly handle backend development with PHP (Laravel and legacy implementations) and occasionally Django and Spring, custom auxiliary sites for initiatives like campaigns and inaugurations,  Wordpress MultiSite development, and JavaScript development with the ever-changing MV* frameworks like Angular and React. I occasionally assist the NetOps team when we're nearing deadlines. I am always pushing the use of Git, CSS preprocessing, and design prototyping with Sketch. Additionally, I am highly involved with iOS development, so hopefully we can introduce some robust native mobile applications in the near future.

I am very excited to be a part of the USG community and hope to learn the ins and outs of Higher Education and further my technical and social knowledge. I hope we can put our heads together to create something amazing for our school system (without legal encroachment of course).

Hey all, I'm Daniel Fowler and I'm the web manager at UGA's College of Education.

I lead a small team (me +1 other guy) in charge of protecting the integrity of the COE's web assets related to http://coe.uga.edu (my words, not my dean's). Since we launched 2 redesigns in the past 14 months, I am still currently navigating culture shock most weeks. Translating faculty ideas and wants and "we used to have..." into solutions that are helpful for their target audience is a full-time job, as you all know for sure. A lot has changed, and my team currently has over a dozen projects in queue for enhancing our new website a section at a time. I always say start small, then evolve as needed. Well, we're in the evolution phase!

We're using a flat-file content management system called Statamic to do all the usual, really cool things that you'd expect from a higher ed website. My work with Statamic has been featured on the CTRL+CLICK CAST podcast and on BuiltWithStatamic.com - a community of Statamic developers. Our website was a community-voted site of the month there, too, back in August 2014.

I hope that USGWeb can get to a place where there's a common bond among developers and build relationships that evolve into co-ops. Heck, I even have this crazy utopian idea that eventually we could have a collection of centralized, shared repositories where developers from all across the system can tap into the work we're doing right now. So if a college hires a new developer, all they'd have to do decide what CMS they want to build with, visit the USG repo, and pull all the core files/configurations/logos they need to get started. A pipe dream, I know. Dream big though, right?

Our site is built with Cascade Server and I customize many features within it, such as the calendar of events, course lists, advanced forms, and several others. We are currently working on a huge redesign for the entire site that should launch in August. I'm really excited about it.

I don't really have any expectations of the group, not sure what I'll find yet. Hopefully, I'll make a few good contacts and find some good help or help a few good people. We'll see where this journey takes us. I look forward to it.

Hi folks, pleasure to join the group.  I recently escaped from the business high tech sector joining the GGC staff.

As a newbie to the USG system managing the internal GGC applications and data reports team I am looking for all the community resources I can get my hands on to make the GGC experience with our business applications a positive one for students, staff and faculty.  This group seems like a great place to start!

Hi All,

I'm Darin Givens, Webmaster for the Georgia Public Library Service, a Unit of the University System of Georgia.

GPLS is the office of the State Librarian, Julie Walker, who also serves as Associate Vice Chancellor for the Board of Regents.

I work in a two-person communications department, running our website and social media. I also host web sites for about 25 library systems statewide on our server, providing training for their staff as needed and configuring their CMS'. I use Drupal and WordPress.

Really enjoying following the discussions here. Public libraries and universities are different in their needs but also similar as public entities.

Hey y'all,

My name is Michael Forest, and I'm a software developer for the Enterprise Web team at Georgia Southern University. My main role is the support and maintenance of our student portal (MyGeorgiaSouthern). I'm also responsible for maintaining our CAS authentication server as well as many of the automated processes for accounts management. I mostly work in PHP and C# (with a sprinkle of shell scripting to be dangerous). MyGeorgiaSouthern uses a MySQL and an Oracle database, and our CAS server talks to our Active Directory instance.

I joined this team in March of 2016 after spending spending 8 years in the private sector, so learning about all the unique problems in higher ed has been a very interesting challenge for me. I hope that I'm able to meet liked-minded people through this group, and I would like to learn and share the knowledge that's here.

Hi everyone!

My name is Tatiana and I'm a Web Developer at Georgia Southwestern State University. I work under University Relations department and responsible for front/end web development, as well as all sorts of graphic design. IT department also gives me few tasks to do which have Banner and Directory updates involved :) Currently we have Joomla 3.3 for Web site CMS, but I need to update it to Joomla 4.6 and redesign a front page. I really hope that USG working group will help me to deal with my every day duties since I miss somebody to share my pain and concerns with. It was really nice to meet some of you at Rock Eagles conference this year.

Hello, and thanks for the add!

My Name is Gabriel Mathis and I am the Web Manager for the Technical College System of Georgia's system office. I have recently departed from the Communications office, and now work in the Information Technology division. My daily work functions are focused on the public-facing website, as well as our SharePoint Intranet. I hope this group will benefit our agency, and the citizens of Georgia by collaborating, and utilizing the latest technology, trends, and procedures that will ensure a streamlined online experience.

In addition, we are researching/preparing for a complete web presence overhaul, and our interests are focused on an easy to navigate, simple, accessible, and user-friendly CMS based solution.

Cheers! - Gabe

Georgia Gov Interactive (http://portal.georgia.gov/interactive/ ) has a really really really great perspective and project around this, and you might hear more about it at USG Web Tech Day (http://usgweb.gatech.edu/usg-web-tech-day/ )!
