All,

I have a mountain bike enduro event coming up this weekend at a trail network with no cell reception. I can travel a short distance to get it though. Is there a way to use bluetooth to combine start/finish data?

Here is my normal approach to this type of event.
  • Starting iPad uploads start date to Webscorer.com to complete a Stage
  • Finishing laptop uploads finish data to Webscorer.com to complete a Stage
  • I do this for multiple stages.
  • I add these stages to a series to determine the overall winner etc.
I know others time it with laps and skipped laps, but I have selected to treat each stage as a separate event and use a series to pull it together. Here is an example: https://www.webscorer.com/seriesresult?seriesid=402637

Regardless, I believe the two approaches need to push the data to Webscorer.com for processing. Is there a way to do this using bluetooth?

Thanks,
Travis with RCMBA

There is a way to combine results via Bluetooth if you use the “Exclude laps” method vs, the “Results series” method of combining the times from multiple stages.

Thank you, Vesa. I thought you would have a solution, as always. I will take a look.

Vesa (and others), one follow up questions/complication.

Not all racers race all of the stages. Example, Beginners only do two of the stages while Expert do four stages (expert race the same two as the beginners plus two others). Will the Exclude Laps method work in this situation? I know for the Result series approach, I make a separate series for each so that the results don't say "-2 laps" etc.

Thanks,
Travis

You’d use both “Exclude laps” and “Skip laps” options as follows:

Start type = Individual
Multiple distances = On
Record lap times = On
  Beginners: 7 laps
  Experts: 7 laps
Customize lap names = On
  Start = S1 start
  Lap 1 = Stage 1
  Lap 2 = S2 start
  Lap 3 = Stage 2
  Lap 4 = S3 start
  Lap 5 = Stage 3
  Lap 6 = S4 start
  Lap 7 = Stage 4
Skip laps = On
  Beginners: Skip = S3 start, Stage 3, S4 start, Stage 4
  Experts: Skip = None
Exclude laps = On
  Beginners: Exclude = S2 start
  ExpertsL Exclude = S2 start, S3 start, S4 start
Timing mode = Multi-device splits
  Device #1 records = S1 start, S2 start, S3 start, S4 start
  Device #2 records = Stage 1, Stage 2, Stage 3, Stage 4

It’s a costly option.   I have added a Starlink mini so i can connect to the internet in dead zones.  I am quite happy with its performance in the wooded area where I use it.  I mount it on a tripod and use a bluetti battery power source.  The pros are it’s portable, works in cellular dead zones and you can turn the service on and off.  The cons are that it’s extra stuff to carry and setup and it adds cost.

Thanks Larry. I think this is definitely worth looking into. We are rural and there are many areas not covered by cell in our region.

Vesa,

One more wrinkle. The race director has the Experts order as Stage 3, 1, 2, 4 and Beginners order as Stage 1, 2. Any way to do this so that "Stage 1" means the same thing for both groups, so times are comparable?

Thanks,
Travis

Negative - the “exclude laps” method requires that the stages are traversed in order.

The workaround is to go back to timing each stage as a point-to-point race and use the website results method to combine results with Larry’s suggestion to get a Starlink terminal.

Thanks Vesa. That makes sense.
